Did you ever go on vacation and realize….I have been here before and I seriously didn’t appreciate it as much as I could have! Well that happened with us. We were planning a spring break adventure and I thought we would hit up Tybee Island….well low and behold….Tybee was booked. All of it. So Jeremy started looking. And if you know something it should be this…when Jeremy starts searching for something – he will find it and it will be amazing. Enter Jekyll Island.
It is exactly what we were trying to find….someplace low key, laid back and had lots of little activities for our little ones. It’s off the coast of Georgia (and you know how I want to explore all the GA places!) and the funny thing is – I was here in high school and totally didn’t appreciate the restful atmosphere and the casual beauty of this place.
When we were getting ready to go, Jeremy said that a beach bag company reached out to us to ask us to review one of their bags. I was like sure….throw it in the stash! My first thought was we are gonna destroy it DAY ONE. Little did I know that this bag is actually something I never knew I always wanted. It is so perfect if you have a family like us. Let me tell you all about it…and I seriously hope I am the first because you are gonna thank me SO HARD….
The company that makes it is called Beachmate and they were super smart about the design and functionality of this thing. It’s no ordinary bag. IT HAS SHOVELS. i know.
So the biggest part of the bag is heavy duty….it’s like a giant plastic box that actually can protect things like a camera….yeah…unlike my normal bags. At the bottom of that thing is a cooler pack. It sits at the bottom and can keep your snacks and drinks cool. Then you have a bunch of different size buckets that fit inside the upper part and hold your stuff. They can also be used as sandcastle buckets and drink holders.
The boys loved the buckets. I think it may have to do with the fact that they were perfectly sized for them.
We were able to load all the stuff up in the bag and then we could lay the towels across the top.
The exterior of the bag also had closed storage pockets so that you can stash your keys or wipes or your phone.
LJ is really excited about the storage possibilities 🙂
On the back side is the clips to hold the shovels. And these aren’t the regular ole dollar store shovels….they are virtually unbreakable. #tested
The boys were obsessed with the shovels. Like CRYING to take them to dinner.
Since we were at the beach, we decided to try everything out and put the gear to the ultimate ‘consumer report test’ – our children.
This is just unbelievable. It’s a whole beach to ourselves!
The cooler pouch was perfect because we were very close to the beach in our hotel. I think it would be on the small side if you were looking to carry a six pack of your favorite drinks down to the shore line but for us, it worked out perfectly. We can only do the beach in small increments anyway because of nap times. It was plenty of room for our drinks and snacks.
And I should mention that this sand was hard….like it’s the perfect walking beach. You don’t slip and slide all over the place.
But the boys had no problem digging up the dirt with the heavy duty shovels. In fact, there were only about two other people on the beach and one of them asked where they can get some of the shovels for their kids.
The kiddos with the Bower castle creation.
LJ attempting to crash it 🙂
I love the story behind the brand too. It’s such a new product and it is hitting the market NOW. It was founded by Jeff and Beatrice Mellick. The Mellick’s have 3 kids and absolutely love spending their summers at the beach just like EVERYBODY ELSE. A few summers ago in 2013, Jeff was digging holes in the sand for their kids, however shovel after shovel kept breaking on him. Jeff was so fed up that he actually went to the store, bought an expensive gardening shovel and the following day dug holes and built sandcastles in a fraction of the time. That is when the light bulb went off and the Beachmate brand was born. This family is committed to making SMART, DURABLE and FUNCTIONAL beach essentials for everyone!
Here’s why I think their bag is smart….
- it’s all-in-one and stackable
- the shovels snap onto the bag
- the cooler system keeps stuff cold and sand out
- everything is bright colors which make it hard to loose
- it’s lightweight…unlike garden shovels!
Here’s why I think their bag is durable….
- it stood up to our kids with a hard beach
- the buckets have unbreakable nylon straps
- the plastic buckets are extra thick
- the shovels are made from one piece of industrial strength plastic (no breakable pressure points)
Here’s why I think their bag is functional….
- we already have so much to carry…this helps with the shoulder strap to combine all the toys and essentials into one bag
- the pockets are perfectly sized for phones, wallets, iPads, and sunscreen
- the large exterior bucket is great for protecting things like cameras after you get settled
- it’s multi-functional – just flip over the buckets for cupholders
It even has straps for your towel – just roll it up and strap it on! Speaking of towels – the BeachMate brand is also coming out with hats, turkish blankets and towels…I love how fast the turkish towels dry – it makes them the perfect partner to your Beachmate bag….

Jekyll Island looks like such a great spot! I’m always looking for low-key vacations for my family so will keep this in mind.
That bag looks perfect – though a little pricey. Did they offer you a discount code to share with your loyal readers?! 😉

Are you going to do a full review of your trip to Jekyll Island? Where you stayed? Where you ate? What you did? It looks so nice, and I’d love to hear how it was for a family with small children! Thanks!

Yes I will share all the details! It was a really fun place and even with two sick kids we found all the kid friendly stuff!

How did you manage two extra shovels?

I saw this reviewed on Merricksart.com and fell in love. Showed my husband and we are planning on ordering a set with our name on it. So glad to see a second review to confirm how great it is.

Would love to hear more about Jekyll Island. Looks like you had a great time at the beach. Where did you get your pastel beach towels? Love them!

We actually received two bags….we figured that we would need it! And it’s easy enough for Jeremy to carry one and for me to carry the other. Right now the shovels are important but I think in the future the most important part will be the cooler 🙂

What a cute idea!

Maybe this is a point you should cover in the review as you suggest it was a good size for your short distance hotel-to-beach trip. When in actually fact you had double the space to take down with you…
It is sort of misleading that you do not mention you had two for your family if six. When someone might spend $100 on a bag (on merit of your review) and then realise it isn’t big enough.
If the cooler would be the most important part, buy an additional cooler. It would be cheaper and more sizeable.
I wish you were more honest about the cons on these sponsored posts.

Hi Katie, Love your posts. I’ve mentioned before and I’m still not sure why, but your photos don’t load well in the Feedly reader. They are narrow and elongated. I mention it again because yours is the only blog that seems to be this way. Any thoughts or suggestions as to why this is happening?
Thanks!
Katie says
Oh no…I am sorry I mislead you. I did NOT take two bags to the beach. We only took the extra shovels and the boys carried them (as seen in the picture!). We only took ONE BAG to the beach and the cooler was big enough for us. I am sorry that seemed dishonest…we only received two for FUTURE use for that second bag!

I really don’t know why Marcy but I am so sorry! I contacted Feedly about it but haven’t heard back yet. I will continue to do so! It actually shows up fine in my Feedly reader so maybe try reloading it? That’s my only suggestion!

Jeremy has emailed them to ask! I will post it at the bottom if we get one!

Why have a cooler you can’t fit a six pack? Way too small.

hahaha!

I have this problem on my phone and iPad. I usually just click out to safari to see the photos and read the text more easily. I also read a few blogs that constantly reload in Feedly and have to click out to safari for those, too. HTH
