The long awaited results are in! Here’s the video of us awkwardly talking about who had the best idea….
As a recap, (and for those of you that don’t get to watch the video because you don’t know how to press play….mom) the Bower Buildoff is a competition that we created where Jeremy and I go head to head to create the best DIY project with preset parameters.
He gets to choose one parameter and I get to choose one. In this case, we decided that it would need to be a project built with one or more of these thread spools and it could only take one hour.
After we built our projects, you got to see the final reveal and blindly vote on what you liked best. The winner would be victorious with a Gold Hammer trophy and the loser would have to jump in a freezing pond in the middle of winter. Just kidding. There is no prizes or consequences…unless you count pride and the title of winner that you get to lord over your spouse. Which we totally do.
The projects were both something we could use in our home and we didn’t spend a ton of money on either one. Here are the final reveal photos…
The votes were tallied and the winner was decided.
Yup. The lamps kicked bench bootie.
So who created the DIY craftiness? Well…I think most of you already knew. Here’s who built what…
Dudes. I thought you had my back. It wasn’t even a close race. Like he was Hussein Bolt (edit* apparently he now spells his name Usain…sorry fastest man alive!) and I was LJ…who is not walking…or crawling…just drooling. I guess that makes me first loser. Until you remember that now I have new lamps and a new bench. Which makes me the winner of the universe. Plus…the lamps were totally my idea first 🙂
Usain Bolt, pls fix that. And I loved the lamps.
Haha awesome! I totally voted for the lamps, sorry to say. Also, it’s Usain Bolt, not Hussein 🙂
I hope you have a tutorial on how you guys made those! Great series, looking forward to the next one. 🙂
That was AWESOME! More please.
Both projects were awesome. As nice as the lamps are- such a great idea, whoever thought of it- I personally liked the bench better and voted for it. But I must say Katie, your Jeremy is one good- looking male!! I like his laid-back personality and the banter that goes on between you. And you are a doll with that sexy, southern girl charm. Along with those three precious boys of yours- what a blessed family you are. So you at least owe your man a massage or something, right?
You’ll probably have a million and one people already jumping to correct your wee error with the world’s fastest man… I’ll leave that one alone and instead comment: I’m sorry!!! I liked both, but the lamps looked just a touch more refined and greek column-like sort of. I think I would’ve liked the bench better if the feet weren’t there or if there was a bar or something across the middle just to balance it a bit? Or maybe a deeper cushion?
Great effort from the both of you anyways – and yay! New lamps and bench came out of this so indeed, you are the winner 🙂
Maybe I missed it, but will there be a tutorial for these projects?
Lets talk about the sheets on your bed currently…..what and where from??? Good Job Bowers! I would put both of those projects in my house! xo C
Is Hussein Bolt related to Usain Bolt? 🙂
Do you mean Usain Bolt??
I totally could not figure out who did what. The thing is, they were both great! The bench is awesome and upholstered in gorgeous fabric. But the lamps, the lamps were super cool. They look so interesting. Great job to both of you!!
Guys. Of course, the more simple project 🙂
Now I need to find some of these spools, I’m in love!
I loved this post and the contest idea. You guys should do this once a month. And make more videos. I like watching y’all interact. And Weston walking around and talking was great. Good Andi face as well. Props.
I hope this becomes a regular thing. I laughed the whole way through this video! Oh, and maybe next time you can video record yourselves finding out what the results are…I would have loved to see your reactions!
You guys are the cutest! I could not stop smiling like a total dork through this entire video. Love it!
Yes! Probably next week.

That’s what he said too 🙂

Haha!! TOTALLY Andi face!! And add the slight Southern accent… You guys are practically twins!
Well, I stand by my vote, that is by you, because I chose the bench!
You guys are so cute, love to see your dynamic as a couple and with the babies, so I really hope more videos follow. You have such a beautiful family, Katie!
This chalenge was super!
I’m going to do a bench myself.
😉
Katie,
I totally voted for the bench! The fabric is beautiful too! I think you get props for using 4 spools instead of just 2!
for the record — i voted for the bench! =) you guys are pretty cute by the way.
They are both great projects. Since I’m sitting next to a pair of lamps that look just like that (a little fatter) I chose the bench for originality.
So fun!! I love your room. Can you tell me where you got your striped pillows and bedding and where you got the zig zag gray pillow?? Thanks so much.
Amy
Where did you find the thread spools??? Love the competition and love the projects!!
I love the fact that over 10,000 people voted or was that Jeremy cheating again?? #justsayin
I think that you should have a little build-off friendly competition with the Petersiks 🙂
I tried to vote and just honestly could not decide which i liked best. They were both great!
Ditto! I’ve never wired a lamp before, and a couple quick tutorials would be great 🙂
I just saw the latest Garnet Hill catalog and they used those same spools in one of the
pictures. Thought about this as soon as I saw them!
honestly, I thought the bench looked disproportionate with the awkward skinny legs; kind of like a muffin top of benches… like me in skinny genes. -.- The top of the bench is super cute though, love ikat
I thought that they were both pretty cool, but you made us choose!
When I voted I totally thought this is easy Katie did the lamps! I was shocked to find out otherwise because I was 100% sure you had the lamp idea… and I guess it was yours first hahaha.
I actually liked the bench better, but thought that because the more flattering photos were of the lamps they must have been yours. So I voted Lamps!
But I agree, you win. I mean, he did take your idea. He probably would have put them in his crossfit box as white board marker holders if it wasn’t for you!
I voted for the bench! I love benches and love the unique legs and fabric you chose.
Katie, I love your blog but as a Caribbean person, this is driving me crazy! Usain never changed his name, but apparently you did? Lol
That would be fun!

It was a joke Keisha. I do that a lot…both misspelling and joking.

We found them at a local antique mart 🙂

Love both projects. Great idea and I hope there’ll be another contest in the future.
Someone has probably already said this but I’m lazy and don’t have time to read the comments. I think the bench might look better with two more spools in the center. I realize you more then likely only had the four of the same size, but to me it looks a bit top heavy with just the four. I still think it’s cute though and I love the lamps.
That was fun contest and the projects that came out of it are great! You both did an awesome job! Hope there will be another challenge in the future!
I voted for the bench, sorry it did not win. I really liked it.
