It’s funny. I didn’t even feel the urge to look at the house until this week. I was wrapped up in this little guy.
Warning. This here post is just chock full of Will-good-ness. Or Good-Will-ness depending on how much you like my baby. And I will not apologize for it. I wish I could say that I had felt inspired to make this big ole whale of a house more like ‘our home’…but there is no way that painting some walls or hanging mirrors or pictures or picking out color schemes compares to making memories. I have decided that a house doesn’t become your home by what you put in it, or what you do to it, or what it looks like at all…a place becomes home by the moments you close your eyes in comfort, in pure joy and in the fluttering of your heart. And here are some of those moments…(boys-I-apologize-and-yes-I-will-gag-you-with-a-wooden-spoon-later)…
- baby slobber on Scout – the talking teddy-dog – from sweet openmouthed kisses
- lookin at Will gives me great anticipation over what his ‘thing’ will be…teddy-dogs, cars, dinosaurs, robots, oysters, tubas…the possibilities are endless.
- When Will tries to drink from a sippie cup…backwards. His head tips so far back that I think he is gonna fall back. Yet he doesn’t. It marvels me that he doesn’t.
- Him wanting me more than his sippie cup. Priceless.
- When I found out I was pregnant, I only wanted one thing. A mohawk hat. Will does it one better.
- Rex dinosaur pajamas that make me say ‘Sexy Rexy’. Name that awesome movie.
- Track starts for crawling across the room for a piece of pocket lint.
- the way Will pats on my back when he firsts wakes up. the best feeeling. ever.
- breastfeeding will end probably pretty soon…and when it does, I will be thankful for a photo of these intense moments of trust and closeness.
- Warm days and bare feet. Days that require pretreating grassy knees and scrubbing dirt from under fingernails.
- the shade from the purple plant at the end of the driveaway…and the way the sun finds a little loose hair tuft.
- Will recently fixates on drinking out of adult cups. the reflection of his chubby fingers on the glass.
- seeing this photo download for the first time and laughing hysterically.
- So Big! This was a sweet bittersweet moment.
- seeing baby goldfish swimming all over the floor…and picking up each one only to have Will dump them out again.
I could do this all day.
And yes. It is starting to feel a little more like home…at least it did for one moment…one day….it was a very slim moment…but it happened.

I recently started reading your blog, and my husband and I are expecting our first baby mid-April – these photos and moments make me even more excited for what life will hold when our little boy arrives!

The movie was “Empire Records”! Wow, i watched that WAY too much in high school. “Not on Rex Manning day”
What a sweetie. I wouldn’t get much done either if I had a little Will in the house.
Colleen says
Enjoy this time!! It goes by so fast!! With every big and small milestone your house will feel like your home! Will is so sweet:)
Katie @ explanationrequired says
That mohawk is seriously awesome!! And I remember the days of my baby patting my back when she woke up. Awwww…
Maggie @ Cheneyhome says
LOVE your perspective. 🙂

Will is such a cutie! I love the mohawk

Your son is adorable and I LOVE the mohawk!
Oh and I think you are talking about…Empire Records. Great movie!
johanna says
hi, johanna from southern california here. first time writer, short time reader. lol.
happy to be the first to say….empire records…;)
so i just came across your blog last week and i LOVE you. i love your sarcasm, your ability to be so candid, your faith and the way you’re able to use words so wonderfully…but especially the humor and sarcasm (2 of my best traits if i may say so myself…haha!) i swear we would be friends if we didn’t live on the opposite side of the country. anyway, you’re doing a great job, all the detail of your pregnancy and will’s were definitely my fave. i sure do love myself a detailed birth story. most people think im weird but i feel it’s safe to say you’re right there with me.
well, now that my quick comment has gotten way too long (i do that) i’ll let you go.
anyway, cant wait to check in tomorrow.
have a blessed day, johanna

Love, love, love this post. I draw such inspiration from your fabuous ideas, but this post just touched my heart. I have four beautiful children and they grow up so darn fast, too fast. My baby is already three! And, while there is something really cool about each stage, that first year is really tender. As you head into toddlerhood…remember (and this is the BEST advice I ever got as a mom)….the days are long, but the years go fast. Enjoy all your moments with your beautiful Will.
PS – Love the mohawk!
Kristin Eldridge says
He’s adorable.

I love this post. I love the fact that you are not worried at all with decorating or haning frames or painting. I read so many blogs about life and the houses look so perfect i almost feel like those houses would be no fun to grow up in. Like you said its not about the stuff in it its about the way you live your life. Thanks for keeping it real!
lynn says
beautiful, fun, perfectly imperfect moments captured on (digital) film as always KB!!!
The BFeeding one is one of my favorites. As I just had a baby 6 (yikes) weeks ago…I didnt think Id cherish those quiet, sleepy, minutes in the middle of the night as much as I do. Its something no one else has with your own little one.
Empire Records was on like 4 times this past weekend on the retro Channel of something like that. “IM BRINGING REX HIS LUNCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Keep trying to stump us movie savvy, ABP blog stalkers, with your quotes, Lady!!! 🙂
Meredith says
Awesome post! It’s just a house until you make it a home with memories. I love seeing the messy house in transition. Makes me feel so much better about my house being the same way 🙂
Anna says
He is sooooo cute!!! my little guy has scout too but he loves kicking him lol. Great pics.
Shannon says
first things first, Empire Records. Now that that is out of the way, Will is the cutest! I could eat him up! His expressions are priceless, thanks for sharing!
Alison says
Katie, my son is 2 1/2 and I still get that look from him every so often, from behind his sippy cup. Makes my heart skip a beat 🙂
Victoria says
I think my ovaries just skipped beat…. My husband is not going to be happy with you.
Just kidding… Sorta…. 😉
And I’ll add my own Empire Records l
Victoria says
…oops! Not sure why my comment got cut off halfway- and was left in reply to Emilys comment rather than the whole post. That’s what I get for reading blogs on my iPhone before even get out of bed in the morning!!
Amanda says
I love the photo of “sexy rexy” so cute. Definitely one to frame.
Lauren says
Will is the most adorable little guy! I definitely agree that making memories is much more important than painting and decorating. I’m sure you’ll have plenty of time to work on the house since you’re planning on being there forever! I love reading your blog because you have a great mix of home/decor posts and posts about your life/family….keep up the great work!
molly says
Awwww, what a cutie pie! I have always said that there is nothing cuter than a baby boy in matching jammies!
I understand your issue with your new home actually feeling like “home.” I am nervous about this too since we’re moving to a much bigger home. I’m kind of like, well, how are we going to fill this thing up and make it feel cozy? I’m sure it will happen but as we get ready to move from the home that I brought both my boys home to from the hospital I find myself getting quite emotional.
I hope moving day helps 🙂
Nicole says
Oh Rexy you’re so sexy! I love Empire Records! Watched it like every day after school in high school at a friends house. ha ha.
Will is absolutely adorable!
Lauren says
lol i just watched empire records the other day. all time fav
Elizabeth says
Will is such a cutie! I could just eat his little chubby fingers and toes (meant in a not creepy way). As the days pass, you’ll feel more and more at home. Give it some time, and memories. You’re off to a great start!
PS. the tree in your front yard is a Redbud tree 🙂 they’re so pretty this time of year.
Cait @ Hernando House says
I love this! And his mohwak is adorable!
Colleen says
What a beautiful post, Katie! Thanks for sharing these small moments with us. Will is adorable!
Katie says
Redbud, huh? Well that’s good to know…I was beginning to wonder but thought it would be weird to google “stick bush tree with purple flowers”.

Am I weird that I’ve never heard of Empire Records? I totally had to read the comments to see what everyone was saying. I was afraid it was from Toy Story and I was a little upset that they called the dinosaur sexy in a kids movie… pfew! Glad I was wrong!
My daughter has “Violet”, the girl version of Scout. We downloaded her name to it so it sings her songs and adds her name to it. Which was pretty cool because her name (Harper) is not too common so I wasn’t even sure LeapFrog would have her name, but they did! Here’s my quesiton (and I’m assuming you downloaded Scout with Will’s name): does it not crack you up that Scout/Violet sings this whole song in such an upbeat voice and then inserts Will’s name in a totally flat and monotone voice?
It cracks us up all the time!
And thanks for the cropping idea for the bfeeding picture! I have been trying to figure out how to capture a picture of her sweet face then because I know I’ll miss it so much when it’s over… but of course I’m a little camera shy about photographing The Girls. I am completely embarassed that I didn’t think of cropping it. Duh. Seriously, *DUH*

Love Will’s mohawk!! I am seriously loving his style. It’s nice to see boys clothes without creatures on every single thing! Can we say Gap Baby?
He looks so much like Jeremy, especially in the picture at the end of the driveway!
Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Our boys are soooo similar. From the adult cup obsession to the backward sippy cup drinking. Aren’t little boys the best?!
