Are you making any homemade christmas presents this year? I decided to.
WhatwasIthinking?!
Seriously…Amazon is just way easier. But hopefully the boys love their new pillowcases and pajama pants….and to be perfectly honest…I’m in too deep now. I already spent way too much time getting all the materials together. I’m in deep y’all. Like DEEP deep.
Since I have been spending some time with the ole Singer, I noticed that it would be helpful to have my threads out and easier to access. I literally could not sew another stitch until the spools were organized. All five of them. Walmart sells these little spool organizers and I picked one up for just under ten bucks.
It has legs that swing out…kickstand style…but I didn’t want them so I had to remove them with a screw driver.
I used Martha Stewart’s gold craft paint to give it a quick coat and boom…..shakalakalaka spools! That’s exactly what I said. About five times till Jeremy asked me why I was trying to beatbox.
Now it hangs over the sewing station like the crown jewels. Sorry about the quality of photo – I took these practically as the sun was going down and it had very little light….even with a tripod, it came out crazy. Hopefully Santa will bring me the light kit that I asked for (hint hint Santa…here’s the link so your elves can get it for me!) so this won’t happen again 🙂
Cute, right?!
So are you sewing anything for Christmas? Anyone making cute gifts? I wanna see what you are doing…leave a link so I can copy you shamelessly…and seriously, why didn’t anyone tell me that organizing such small insignificant things makes you have a total high?! I could seriously run a country right now!

I made baby booties for a couple of friends who are expecting after Christmas. It was a really fun project, and not as much work as I was anticipating!

Awesome! I can relate on the “why did I do this” train of thought. I hand-sewed my son a bunch of felt play food for his birthday last year, but he’s been asking for pie (can’t imagine why, hee hee), so I’ve finally gathered everything together…and still have nothing done. Totally hoping a few of Santa’s elves complete the task overnight one of these days….
Also hoping to make a felt board for imaginative play, which will hopefully take more “cutting out cute designs” creativity than “using my brain” creativity.
Either way, good luck! Your sewing spot looks absolutely adorable (and quite bright!).

Great idea! And the cheerful colors really brighten up the space!

I’m embroidering my friends initials. Way more work than I thought it would be!!

You are making pajama pants? If you need a pattern I recommend the Parsley Pants pattern from Made by Rae. I’ve made my kids a ton of pajama pants (and regular pants, too!) from this pattern. So easy and cute, and it works with cottons, flannel, fleece, etc.
For Christmas gifts, though, I am making ornaments. I’m using the ‘Home for the Holidays’ tutorial by Retro Mama. So cute. http://retro-mama.blogspot.com/2011/10/home-for-holidays.html
Oh, and I made my husband a small duffle bag, and my friend a zippered pouch were her name on it. Almost forgot!
Happy sewing!

I am thinking giant wall memo boards with a cute calendar (easy & makes a big impact) or edible gifts- fun to make and fun to package! Hopefully fun to eat! Here are some other ideas I rounded up though! http://createbakecelebrate.com/2014/12/diy-gift-round.html

I almost always try to make gifts. Last year my husband was the rock star and did a bunch of the gifts. This year it is mostly back on my shoulders. Here are a few things I am making. My daughter is getting a dollhouse (I bought a kit from hobby lobby for 17.99 and ebayed the furniture) and I just finished that last night. I still want to sew some fabrics for the furniture, but at least the building, gluing and painting is done! Hallelujah!! I am building a fort kit for my son (your boys would love this). I am basically using old sheets and then I bought some clips, clothespins, and battery operated light and some clothesline. I have to sew the bag to hold everything, but it is going to be awesome. Here is a link to what I’m copying: http://www.saltwater-kids.com/2008/11/fort-kit-mini-tutorial.html
My am making a picnic blanket for my sister-in-law. I bought some cute fabric and a plastic table cloth. I just need to sew them together. Instant waterproofing for one side and a soft side to sit on. I am kinda excited about that one. And my other sister-in-law is getting a variety of homemade granola bars. There are still a few gifts that we will be buying, but I love it when we make them first. I hope they like them!

How do you have enough room to sew over there?? That would make me crazy! 🙂

I am making way too many items this Christmas. I’m over whelmed. But hey that’s what is supposed to happen… Right? That cute little ruffle apron you made a year or so back… I am making 4! 4 I repeat. Every girl that sees it wants one and only Aunt Tia can make it. I am also doing Snoglobes for some gift cards, and Starbucks cups for those gift cards.

Love simple, easy fixes like this! I monogram/applique so I have spools out the wazooooo. Like I have one of these holders and about 10 spools that don’t have a home. And then a whole box of spares for when my favorite colors run out! Definitely need a second!

I’ve been asking my husband to do this for me for a couple of years and they are still standing on my work table- and I have 3! I know I should just do it myself, but I married him so he could do all the work 🙂

I plan on making a few things for my boys! My 6 yr old has been bugging me for a wallet so I figured I would try my hand at some duct tape wallets 😀

Hey Katie! Did we ever get to hear who won the last challenge? 🙂

I plan on buying from my own shop this Christmas! 🙂

I bought an ikea doll bed on consignment for $4. I let my 2 year old pick out the spray paint (sparkly purple – of course) and the fabric for a pillow, bed, and blanket. I have zero time for the sewing machine so I took the lazy way out and everything is being held together by hot glue and stich witchery. I’m praying it doesn’t come apart within 5 minutes of playing with it. Pinterest mom I am not!
Carol says
I like your spool holder – mine spools of thread need some major organizing.
Katie says
I pull the table a couple of inches farther out (it isn’t right on the wall bc of the molding) and if I have a huge project, I just move the machine. I am no pro though…small projects all around!

I’m sewing a baby quilt for my granddaughter due in April. I’ve made a quilt for all of my grand kids when they were born and then a little bit bigger one when they are a little bigger.
Ashley says
Random – did y’all ever mention who won the Bower Build-Off last month??
Jen says
I have the same spool holder and it’s amazing! I put all of my threads in rainbow order so its easy to find the one that matches the project and once I make up a bobbin for a thread I just slip it under the the spool on the same peg!
I am making an applique sweatshirt and some cloth wipes for a cousin who is trying cloth diapering this Christmas!
Katie says
haha! That would be tragic.

I always see these in workspaces and always want one. I finally googled and saw how inexpensive they are… so I’m going to have to give myself one for Christmas. We’re doing a mostly DIY christmas so I’m doing some paintings for family to get stationary made, a couple weavings, and having my daughter (18months) paint some small canvases for her grandparents, aunts, and uncles (http://instagram.com/p/v_VP-kCGlf/?modal=true). Having all of these DIY plans has made Christmas sneak up on us a little faster than I was expecting.

I’m really starting to regret my decision to make counted cross-stitch kitchen towels for my sister. I embroider regularly but haven’t done this in probably 15 years-for a reason. I’m not enjoying this project. I’m not entirely sure if it’s going to be done by Christmas either. I may end up running to Home Depot for a gift card on the 24th. 😉
I am also crocheting a little beanie for my 2 1/2 year old. I have a homespun yarn on pale pink & white & brown. Very cute.
http://juststitched.blogspot.com/2012/01/free-pattern-beanie-with-bill.html?m=1
I also just finished a vest for her. It was a sweater pattern but we live in AZ where the temps dip down into the 70s so she doesn’t really need sleeves. It is the same colors but different shades so doesn’t really match the beanie. I’m happy with it though.
I really enjoy your posts. Keep ’em coming! Merry Christmas!

cute workspace!
I just made a table runner for my brother and sister-in-law out of quasi-burlap fabric that was being thrown away after bedecking their wedding reception, plus lace from a bag of handmade lace and other trims a friend passed on to me a few years ago. I can’t believe that a) I finished a project! and b) it looks good! and c) I didn’t spend a dime on it!
P.S. that makes me sound super cheap. Which might be true. But what is also true is that my brother and SIL are super environmentally conscious and LOVE thrifting and re-using so I am optimistic that they will extra-love their gift!

I’m actually not sewing anything this year for gifts, which is unusual. Everything I’m making is wood- ornaments, utensil holders, and a play kitchen . The kitchen was the big one, but my boys are in love with it!
