Talk about an easy craft that just takes a minute…
this is it folks.
You have arrived.
So I had a bit of sciatica pain flare up over this past weekend and had to take it easy one afternoon. I figured that since I was pretty much bound to the sitting/lying down position, I might as well be all crafty craftypants. not to be confused with all crappy crappypants. totally different thing.
Poo jokes aside…you know me…I like cheap crafts. So I pulled out this old pot from my stash of old pots and decided to give it a little painterly effect.
Here’s some fun facts about the word ‘painterly’ from Wikipedia –
- includes effects such as
- chromatic progression
- warm and cool tones
- complementary and contrasting colors
- broken tones
- broad brushstrokes
- sketchiness
- impasto (paint strokes laid on thick)
- word popularized by Swiss art historian Heinrich Wölfflin
- oil painting is painterly when there are visible brushstrokes, the result of applying paint in a less than completely controlled manner, generally without closely following carefully drawn lines
Sounds like my kinda painting. Also sounds like a preschoolers kinda painting or a horse’s kinda painting (my apologies if I am being insensitive to all my horse readers).
First thing I did was just pick out a bunch of paint. Here is about 3/4 of the colors I ended up using. I figured that since this would probably be a house plant, I didn’t need exterior paint or sealant to protect it from the elements. Last I checked, it doesn’t really rain inside.
Then I just started dabbing little lines all over. It was literally a task for the non-painter in me.
I switched colors after I got bored. Then switch again. Then switch back. Repeated over and over. It only took me about ten minutes to get the whole thing painted the first round. After it dried, I did round two…deepening some colors, adding variation to areas that needed more light colors or dark colors or more blue or more green. It was a very mindless craft…I can totally see anyone doing this…
In the end, I just popped a fern in it and called it a day. I love the happiness of it. It’s like a pot that is flashy and is proud. It’s the Wayne Newton of pots. Or Elvis. Whoever was flashier. Both were kinda before my time.
So what kinda crafting are you up to today? Anything painterly?

Awesome. Also, is that Will in that picture!?! It’s hilarious and I love it!

As an art teacher/crafter/blogger, I vote for more use of the word painterly. Let’s get it trending on the Twittersphere. Oooooor encourage more people to paint for the sake of painting because it’s fun. 🙂

The pot is really cute. I should pull some out for my kids to paint. They love doing that. Today I am working on making checkbook covers for my etsy shop. I’ve been slacking lately in the craftiness department. It feels good to get back to it.

It almost may be Liberace flashy 🙂

Love the easy crafts! Thanks! P.S. You are on such a roll with these posts!!! One after another…love it! It’s amazing how much you get done with two little ones running around while being preggo with a third…super impressive. Both of my boys are napping at the same time (for once) and the only thing I want to do is read blogs…instead of cleaning, organizing, doing the thousands of things that need to get done! Anyways, just wanted to say that you’re doing a great job and you are inspiring!

I love this! I’m going to attempt it this weekend.

I see it as more “Elton John” flashy. Looks great!

Ahh Alie. My friend. My awkward hugging partner. Thank you. You are too sweet 🙂

That is Will and I love that photo because he was always pretty stoic except for that moment 🙂

Love it! May have to copy the idea soon… have some grungy old pots in the basement this would be perfect for.
P.s. Good thing you apologized to the horse readers. Dont need them getting their panties in a wad.

Today I am teaching myself to watercolor. So far I’ve painted two pears, the first of which looked more like a green/yellow eggplant, and an apple. Now I’m going to try to tackle a Weimaraner. If that works out, I’ll do a larger one for a charity auction.

Love the craft but super loving the pink chair in the background!! I’d love to know the paint color 🙂

that picture totally made me lol.

As a fellow sciatica sufferer, at 33 years old!, the best way to get rid of it is to actual walk it off. My uncle is a doctor and tells me to just walk it out. It actually works. The more I’m still, it just stays but if I get moving it goes away faster. Hope it helps.
Katie says
It’s actually red. It just looks pink because it is so blown out 🙂
Here is the link about it.

Mine is usually brought on by being too active…like not sitting down all day and lifting the boys too much. I have noticed in being pregnant with Weston that it was brought on by improper hip movement (like twisting or rotating the legs at the hips) and sitting too much.

That is so cute!! Btw, Wayne Newton is still alive & singing in Las Vegas.

Hey Katie! I have a son will’s age and was wondering what you do for discipline? He still hits and steaks toys/tries to control the house haha. Any tips?
Melissa says
Steals, not steak!
Katie says
Yup I did know that…and yet he is still before my time 🙂

I love it! What is the little white sphere next to the plant & picture?
Katie says
Will actually has gotten a lot easier in recent months in the discipline area. Right now the job gets done with a threaten of time out or if we tell him that we may take away something. He HATES when we yell at him (most kids do, I assume) and so we try to minimize the amount of times we actually get upset and usually take on the voice of CEO and he responds best to that as well as ‘logical punishment’. That’s when if he steals a toy, he loses his favorite toy for the rest of the day and he has to sit in time out. Usually I play that up like it’s the end of the world.

It’s actually a oil diffuser. I got it at Pier 1 a long time ago and you can put any scented liquid in it.

Another great idea! Showed it to one of the painters on my crew…Got him the paint colors I wanted and had him do it as a small back splash in a kitchen…totally looked like tiles when it was done…Thanks again…You are brilliant!
Katie says
Cool idea making that into a backsplash!

I first got it when I was pregnant with my first. Before that , I had only heard my grandparents and their friends talk about it. Thought it was old person thing. Ha!
