Before I recap our entire Christmas experience (you know…for posterity sake and because goshdarnit my kids are cute), I wanted to show you our latest accomplishment. I wish I could say that Santa brought this to us on the night of the 25th but the truth is…it took us almost two weeks to finish. Yes. Two weeks to paint what amounts to one room. I’m not complaining. This one little space has literally changed my life. No exaggeration.
Let me explain. This spot is what I call the mudroom. It’s the door from the garage to the house…connecting the laundry room, office, guest bathroom and kitchen. It’s the first thing I see most days and where I spend a lot of time (hello potty time and laundry is my life these days). I didn’t think this makeover would affect my feelings about our house like it has. It’s sort of huge for me. I think it’s because it’s the first thing I see most of the time when I enter the house. It’s the first place I look. It’s like the eyes of our house. And we all know the eyes are the nipples of the face (name that movie)….therefore making this room the nipples of my house.
So way back in the day, I took this space and started adding a few things to the walls here and there. I put up a dresser and a mirror and a little tiny pig rack. Then I redid the dresser (blogged about that here) and actually took a bit of paint (leftover from our exterior paint testing) and put that on the walls. But it wasn’t ever enough. It was failing in the function category and in the ‘finished’ category. The trim was still tan-ish, the painted walls only were one coat and half way up the adjoining hall. Even my three little piggies were commonly overloaded with bags, coats, etc. In fact…that pig rack was what started it all.
Jeremy would come in the door almost every day yelling about the pig rack and how it was too small and not properly secured to the wall. In my defense, it was being held in place with TWO 100lb hooks…but apparently he thought that even 200lbs was sometimes hanging on the three little pegs. And that dresser? Total dumping ground.
My issue was that the little mud room area was painted but the hall was not. So we had a warm tan trim going on with our cool greenish walls and then some brownish tan painted walls. It was weird.
And to give you a little perspective…this is how it compares to white trim…which is what is in the still unfinished laundry room.

So over our holiday break, Jeremy wiped down all the trim with deglosser, I sanded out some damaged areas and we did one coat of primer on all the trim and three coats of paint, we painted the ceiling three times and did two coats on the walls.
Here is how that white trim stands out against the previous cream color (the garage door stayed untouched because I think I am gonna do it in a fun color).
I get the question a lot – HOW DO YOU PICK OUT PAINT COLORS?
And here is my current answer…I go through a bazillion swatches and then pick out two. Then I google pictures of them. The internet is a wonderful place. This time around, I went with my old standby which I used in our old house…Olympic’s Dusty Trail and a new pick…Benjamin Moore’s Stingray.
In the end, I liked the Stingray more with the kitchen color.
I also decided to tackle the problem of the pig rack by just picking up some new heavy-duty metal racks when we were in Chattanooga. I told y’all that we did a little last minute shopping, remember? While we were at one of my favorite stores in Chatty, Southeastern Salvage, I grabbed two of these metal coat racks. They were $15 each – which I felt was really fair considering that each hook could cost me about $3 a piece in the hardware store (totally fair considering that Ballard Designs has a spot-on twin for $69). Plus, Jer loves the industrial (ahem sturdy!) vibe.
We installed them one evening and let me tell you…I don’t know how I lived without ten hooks before.
I also threw up some picture frames (still needing some cute photos!!! get on that Katie!) but just check out the difference…
Obviously there is still some touching up to be done…
- patch and repaint the walls where old holes were
- touch up the picture frames
- paint the heads of the screws that we used to hang the racks (Jer insisted on certain anchors that used specific screws)
But overall….HOLY NIPPLES OF THE HOUSE BATMAN.
And now cue the dramatic music…we have befores and afters…
And just check out that difference to the laundry room…see how the trim looks so much cleaner and really influences it into a totally different space?
That little space right next to the laundry room is where I want to put a door with sliding barn hardware. Hopefully that way it won’t creep into my laundry space and still be a great way to hide the mess when the dirty clothes get out of control.
So that is officially is our first makeover of the 2014. Not too shabby…you know, for a life-changing kinda change.
Holy moly batman. What a difference! Looks so clean and crisp. I can totally see how it changes your outlook immediately when you walk in the door. A few black and white photos of your boys playing outside would be perfect in those frames.
So what is the pig hook’s future?
We put it right outside the door inside the garage. It is currently acting as a wet-clothes-from-muddy-boys rack 🙂

Wow what a difference! Painting trim true white has got to be one of the most impact-ful things you can do to a house! I really like those frames too…where did you get them, and were they inexpensive? I’m always on the lookout for budget-friendly frames =).

It’s incredible how different it looks! But seriously, can you stop it? You’re putting those of us who aren’t pregnant and have no excuse for half painted walls to shame. Alternatively, come to Australia and paint my walls 😀
What a difference indeed! Tan trim is barf worthy, I know from first hand experience thanks to military housing. White walls, tan trim and doors and honey cabinetry have me crying into my home decor magazines. BTW, I’m pretty sure the hippo bag makes the coat rack 😉 My 3 yr old has the same one.

Your title is in incredibly poor taste. I know you are referencing Steve Irwin’s death, and that does not make for a great title for a post about paint. I know you are trying to be witty but the man died and left two small children. I usually enjoy your posts but this is not clever or funny. I doubt you’ll post this, but please consider changing the title. It’s really not appropriate or respectful.
And perhaps you aren’t referencing his death and are making some obscure pun I’m not aware of, but then you should know Steve Irwin died when a stingray stabbed him in the heart, and that’s how many people will read this.
Wasn’t trying to make that reference at all…more like saying I love the color so it is in my heart. Believe it or not even sometimes I miss a pun or two.

What a difference! That’s what I am working on right now too. I had hubby install molding in my laundry room for coat hooks. Now because my laundry and main entrance all all connected (and small), I am trying to figure out how to make it all work better for us.

Love this! I have an area just like this that is a catch all. This has inspired me to get my act together in that space… I always complain that my husband doesn’t put away his shoes and jacket everyday BUT he really doesn’t have a place to put them! I need to get on it! haha
I have a policy that I do not change or modify any comment or post unless it involves the safety of others or directly affects someone’s income negatively. Even if I did change something, any post still lives on in cached version and on readers (so not only is it pointless to attempt to modify after it’s already out there but then I would get negative comments about how I change things).

For the commenters who say “if you knew Katie..you’d know she didn’t mean it”. I don’t know if she meant it or not. I’ve been reading for years and still don’t know if it’s a joke, because she sometimes makes jokes that could be seen as a bit inappropriate, or a reference that was just I intended. You really don’t “know” someone just because you’ve read their blog, so simmer down. Second, Katie, I’m sorry but your policy kinda sucks. You can be bullheaded on this say, I have a POLICY! Well, sometimes common sense and compassion are better than a policy. And if you don’t care what people think, why would you care if people made negative comments about you making a change. I personally would have so much respect if you said, hey guys, some commenters have alerted me that my title might have inadvertently referenced a sad event, so I made a quick change to be sensitive.

Katie, I have a question.
How, with two small kids and being pregnant, have you not lost your creative mojo? I have three kids and a full-time job and I feel like all creativity has been sucked out of me. I used to enjoy the types of activities you do, but I long ago became so frustrated with incomplete projects, budget concerns, and lack of free time that I gave it all up. Is it the blog? does it keep you going because it’s now a job? Hats off to you, sister!
I don’t know, I’m calling BS on this one. I myself have let this slide in the past as ignorance (Amy Winehouse), but really this is the first thing that came to my mind and a whole lot of others as well. And before I’m called a “Hater” I beg to differ, Katie has the one blog I’ve not tired of yet. I think I know the real reason for this, and that place should just be ignored!

Hi Katie – What color/brand/finish paint and primer did you use for the white trim? I have trim-painting on my to-do list, but so many questions about it, and still scarred from a bad experience when I first moved into my house. Did you have any trouble getting the paint to “stick” to the trim? Did you do a lot of sanding, or is it just a matter of having the patience for 3 coats? Please help another Katie who wants to work up the courage to repaint some trim in 2014! 🙂

Love the color that you chose! And it always blows my mind how white trim moves light around so much better then tan. We had tan trim when we moved into our home and painting it white and adding crown always makes me look back at a room and think “why would anyone paint it different then white?”.

This is exactly where my brain went also. Even reading the title alone before getting to the name of the paint color I did not immediately associate Steve Irwin.
Good for you Katie for refusing to change things afterwards, I truly believe you did not mean any harm by the title! People are too insensitive these days, and anyone who has read your blog for more than .03 seconds knows you would NEVER intentionally make a joke like that.
This is JUST what I needed! I’ve been in our current house for 8 years. All the trim, doors, and ceilings are this off white color. I’ve hated it for 8 years. I know what a difference it would make it white but struggle with having some white and some off-white for awhile. Our house is very open and felt like once I start I can’t go back. I think you have made me realize…actually you and YHL that I just need to start and live with both as I get it all done. I’ve got two little kids so it could take awhile but at this rate I have been living with it for 8 years!! AHHH!! Are there any tips for dealing with it one space at a time? I realize how much brighter, cleaner my house would look after this post. THANK YOU! 🙂

Katie, I do truly feel bad for you reading these comments. Not the negative comments that are critical of your title but the comments from your fans defending you and insisting that you would never have chosen that title if you had realized what it meant. I have to imagine that having these loyal fans who choose to believe that your good heart would never have possibly mocked the death of a good person and father must make you feel guilty because you know in that same heart that they are wrong. You knew what that title meant and you used it anyway and now you have a bunch of friendly women who choose to see the absolute best in you even though right now in this instance you don’t deserve it.
I see that you are sometimes called out here in your comments for crass or tasteless remarks at best and insensitive and cruel ones at worst. You seem to dance around admitting any mistakes or apologizing and I am just wondering why. What would happen if you replied to the first critical comment on this post and just said, “I am so sorry that my title sounds so insensitive. I can honestly say that I did not think of Steve Irwin when writing it but now I see that it could be easily interpreted that way and I feel bad. Please know that I would not have intentionally joked about that and I’m sorry.” How would posting something like that be detrimental to you or the blog?

I really just wanted to show my appreciation for a beautiful makeover. We recently added orb hooks and bench to our tiny entryway and it truly enhanced my life. Would you mind sharing where you got those black frames? They are exactly what I have been looking for, perfect frame thickness.
I think I NEED that paint colour in my house now. Lovely choice. And those hooks are so chunky and perfect. Sigh – I love pretty things.

I was excited to see the change. I like the taupiness of the color. Everywhere you look, people are obsessed with gray. Not that I don’t like it, but variation is nice. What a pain to have to paint that many coats on the trim, but wow! is it worth it. Who paints trim beige anyway?!! As large as your home is, I’m sure it will take a while to get rid of the all the green walls and beige trim. Just be patient. Progress like this goes a long way. And a fun color on the door will be an extra dose of happy. I want to say one thing about the nasty, irreverent comment. My pastor once said, “If you speak harshly against each other, you speak against God.”
I actually immediately started singing Shot to the Heart, but then wondered why this paint color deserves a Bon Jovi reference. I know how Steve Erwin died, and my mind never went there (maybe I was dreaming about Bon Jovi???). I love the way it looks!
No we didn’t forget about the Amy Winehouse title, or the one about Death Coming to us All on Veterans Day. These “whoopsies” happen quite frequently and I’m sure its just to get a rise out of your readers. Although you will still have the gang of Katie groupies who think you can do no wrong. I’ll probably get attacked for saying so. You win.

We used to have our trashcan right next to our door in from the garage. And it just bugged me! Get home, take shoes off, look at ugly trashcan…
And when we finally painted the kitchen and moved the trashcan it was like a breath of fresh air! So much better looking at a bright painted wall than the trashcan.

The dresser got moved into the foyer where the little half-moon table was (that got moved into the dining room for now). And we actually have a hall closet so that is where the hats, gloves, scarves and all the boys coats and snow-clothing lives.

The trim is SemiGloss untinted paint and primer in one (Valspar) in brilliant white. I have to use deglosser to help with the stick and the primer can not cure longer than one day before the paint goes on.

Yup…I do have to be quite stubborn at times. The policy I am strictly stubborn on…even when it seems WAY easier to just remove a comment or change a phrase, I leave it up. As for the title…honestly I have a question that may sound stupid…if I inadvertantly reference a sad event or inadvertantly offend someone with a phrase or word…do I need to always change it or apologize? Because I am pretty sure with the thousands of people that read this blog all over the world, that is gonna happen a time or two. or if I type anything. I don’t want to be callous but I also don’t think it’s fair to say something on my personal blog should be changed anytime someone feels something other than warm and fuzzy about it or misconstrues it into something it’s not.

Yes…if comments come in after your original comment then it will be after theirs…because I approve in chronological order backwards (it’s how WordPress lists them). So that is why if your first comment came in with a question mark and then ten others come in with question marks, including another one of yours…the ones soonest will be answered and approved and it may take me some time to get down to yours. It’s weird but I like to answer questions…so this is the method to my madness.

It’s a little strange that right as views and comments are going down that something shocking “accidentally” is posted to sky rocket blog comments. At least classy blogs like YHL still exist, who are actually concerned about their public image and never have to back track or apologize. This is one “overlook” too many, my first thought on reading this title was Steve Irwin. It’s also ironic that this offensive title is the only obscure title in recent history when compared to Christmas in the House, Woodracked, Fabric Inlay Mirror, etc. Your logic is flawed.
Count me in with the others, you’ve lost one more reader. Maybe it’s time to step up the offensive comments to up your clicks or the sponsors won’t be happy.

I completely agree about wanting to get a rise out of her readers. I mean she probably loves spending her whole day bundled up in negativity thrown at her by trolls with nothing better to do but get upset about underhanded comments regarding their BFF celebrities. Oh for crap’s sake, all these entitled ADULTS bullying a PREGNANT WOMAN over wording they don’t agree with in a BLOG POST on her own blog…no wonder there’s so much bullying from children these days. The paint job is nice and bright. The industrial-meets-cottage charm-style of the coat rack is lovely. I don’t have a mud room, just a foyer and a teeny tiny closet. I’ve considered hanging hooks, but since it’s the first thing you’d see upon entering my home I’d have to find something spectacular. Or cute. Maybe shiny.

People, if this kind of thing upsets you then don't read it, you have the power to control what you consume on every level so do it. When it’s this distasteful, yeah, I kind of think you do (or at least should) apologize and retract. I’ve said and done some pretty bone-headed things in my time, but saying you didn’t know better or do it intentionally isn’t a replacement for an apology/retraction. Like that ESPN journalist who headlined a Jeremy Lin article as “Chink in the Armor.” The writer had used that exact phrase many times previously, clearly didn’t know it was an offensive racial slur for Asians, and still was fired/publically apologized. Or Julianne Hough dressing in blackface for Halloween without knowing the racial implications of her behavior. These are all racial examples, but you get my point.
Now, I do get what you’re saying because you can’t apologize for every little comment that people don’t like. The nipple analogy, for example. Some really conservative people might have a problem with that but that’s not something you necessarily need to apologize for. Maybe a good rule to go by is, if I knew how this comment would be taken before I posted, would I still post it? Now that I have information (that Chink is a racial slur, that blackface is very offensive, that your title seems to very clearly reference the death of Steve Irwin) that I didn’t have before, would I still do what I did? If the answer is no, then an apology/retraction is probably appropriate. You have an awareness now that you didn’t before, and with that comes a responsibility to make right what you did when you didn’t know better.
Love the simplicity of the coat rack minus all the other “real life with toddlers” stuff in this staged photo. But you did show the real life part of that space with shoes all thrown in a basket and other misc. items. Without a shoe spot in place does everyone just leave their shoes in plain sight there scattered all over the floor? Why not add a bench with deep baskets underneath or add a second hooks board so littles can learn to hang up their own jackets and backpacks.

Question- I was admiring the paint color “Stony Creek” in your first house’s living room and am thinking of using it in ours. I’m looking for something cozy and enveloping. The room has a ton of natural light and a medium toned beige/brown sectional. In your posts you mentioned really loving the color and getting a lot of compliments on it. However I noticed you haven’t used it in your new abode (I realized this after you mentioning the Dusty Trail color in this particular post, which you also utilized in your first home ) so all that is ask- does Stony Creek still get the KB nod? Would you recommend it? I worry that it will read really green (you noted some green undertones). Hoping that in person it is as cozy and crisp as in your photos.

I’m curious: do you sand/degloss between coats when you paint the trim? I’m currently in the process of painting all the doors in my hallway bright white (semi-gloss). But I’ve never gotten a straight answer about whether I need to sand between coats or not.
And as long as I’m writing: I have another question for you about the doors. I read your tutorial, and I’m using a roller to get the paint on, then over-brushing. But I almost always end up with at least one or two drag marks–the paint just sets up so fast. Any other tips?

Why do you care if she apologizes? This is someone that you don’t know, have never met and you used your own free will to come to her blog and read it. She isn’t the president of the US, she doesn’t owe you anything and frankly she doesn’t need to be PC. I just think this is ridiculous. When did we all become so uptight? Even more importantly, when did you decide that you will stand as the moral compass for someone you don’t know and even worse, to do so in her own space. I also abhor the entire notion Christians have some sort of an obligation to call out other Christians for not doing things in a “Christian” way. It lacks class and makes you appear that you think you are above her, which really, how Christian is that?

Seriously, I don’t get it. Who is really offensive here? I know you don’t really care what others have to say, due to your responses. It’s shocking adults actually act this way and can be so mean. People have told me when they feel hurt…so I think it’s kind of a little of both. And as much as some of my responses may bother people…I am still learning and make mistakes and sometimes will be stubborn even when I shouldn’t be…I am a human and I know that irritates some folks.

We just degloss at the very beginning. If your paint feels especially rough, here’s what I recommend…take a brown paper bag and put it over your hand and then rub it all over the trim between coats…it’s gonna smooth out any little rough spots but not remove the paint. If you have a problem with drag marks, they sell additives that you can mix in your paint call conditioners. It opens up the dry time (so it will be longer) and so if you have pets or kids, it’s kinda a pain but it does help with the stroke marks.

Actually, I never shared if I was Christian or not. KB does openly share it though, which I think is great. Her lack of empathy in these situations, however is not consistent with Christian teachings. Nobody’s perfect, and we all make mistakes, I get that. Just own up to them and apologize. Most people will forgive.
I care if she apologizes for her offensive comments because I’m standing up for what I believe in. This blog has some wonderful content, but KB is consistently making offensive jokes (knowingly or unknowingly). It is not okay to make light of other people’s tragedies, or to be culturally insensitive (as in some other posts). And as far as being PC, actually YES, she should be. I will confess when I read the title I cringed, because I immediately thought of Steve Irwin. But then, I am an Aussie so I guess that’s why he was my instant thought.
I would point out that to many Australians he is a much loved hero, and a bit of a ‘National Treasure’ . His death had a huge impact In this country, with his memorial service televised and people openly mourning, so in a way you have made a bit of a cultural booboo, even by accident. He’ll, I sobbed my heart out when Bindi Irwin read her obituary to her Dad, and I still get teary when I see pictures of his boy.
However, you know what? It’s your blog. If you say it was an accident so be it. If people are so very, very distressed then they can feel free not to read anymore.
I won’t stop reading because of it. I like ya too much! Everyone makes mistakes.

I love what a difference the white trim makes! We bought a new house almost two years ago and all the walls except for one and ALL the trim AND ALL THE DOORS is builder beige! UGH. I really didn’t pay attention to it when we bought the house, but now it drives me crazy! We are in the middle of painting our nursery for our baby boy we are expecting in February and I was adamant that we paint the trim and doors in the room white. We aren’t big painters though so we tape everything. Once my hubby was done taping he said I’m crazy if I think we’ll ever paint the rest of the trim in the house! I say, “one room at a time”. I’m thinking, with you and Jer’s extensive painting expertise, you don’t have to tape when you paint trim, do you??

Can you please share what kind of anchors you used to hang the coatrack? I recently bought a heavy one for our entryway, and I remember that you’ve mentioned before that Jeremy’s really big on making sure that things are attached to the walls securely.
Here’s a post we did where we attached shelves with the same anchors. It has a better photo of the toggle bolts 🙂
