I guess we could have transitioned Will to a big boy bed. That would have been fun. NOT.
So instead, we just waited for a coupon to Babies R Us and we bought another crib mattress. We figured that eventually (oh in about a year) we would need two (one for Weston who will probably still be in a crib and one for Baby Love after they get kicked out of the master bedroom) so technically it’s not a waste.
Yes. Weston climbed up there all by himself.
So while we were at Babies R Us, we found something else….
It’s the Kelsey chair and runs about $500. But it’s a recliner. And a rocker. And it’s cute as all get out.
Jeremy and I have both been scouring the internet looking for the right nursery chair. We hit up outlets and regular stores and have been looking for something that both rocks or glides and reclines (that was Jeremy’s very specific request) and it had to be a solid color and clean lines. Surprisingly, that is like a stack of onion rings….aka a tall order. Since we didn’t spend any money on the crib in the room (it is borrowed from a friend) and we didn’t really need to buy any baby gear (we already had the boy stuff from Will), we felt like budgeting for a brand new chair was a good decision.
So why didn’t we use the one from Will’s room? Well, he’s really quite attached to it…like sometimes prefers to sleep in that over his bed.
And if you recall, I got Will’s chair off Craigslist and reupholstered it myself. It wasn’t perfect but it worked GREAT for the price (around $40 for the chair and $20 for upholstery supplies). Jeremy felt like it never fit him right…which I understand because I did it for me and my legs are shorter and I went more for upright breastfeeding support (which surprisingly beyond his normal parenting skill set).
So after finding the chair, of course we didn’t buy it.
I mean…I only had one coupon and 20% off was $100! So we checked out the mattress and in the receipt was a coupon for the following week. Seven days later I trekked back to Babies R Us and ordered the chair. While I waited, I thought I would take current pics of Weston’s room…
It’s not much to look at right now but it’s a start.
I literally can not wait to get more ‘baby’ stuff in here. The baby things are so colorful and fun and really pop with a neutral background.
Obviously this space is far from done but it is good enough for a baby to sleep in. Sometimes I get wrapped up in this world of ‘the room has to be perfect’ and ‘this space is not pin-worthy’ but the truth is…dude, this is an infant with a room of his own. dude, this is an infant with an ENTIRE SPACE completely for him and his plethora of first-world stuff. I am sure that folks in other walks of life would laugh at the prospect of a nursery being Pinterest worthy.
After the chair came in, I ran out to pick it up. Thankfully it came in one big box (which usually implies less assembly). As soon as we got it home, we unpacked it and put both pieces together (the back piece slid into the bottom piece and it was UBER easy).
And then this happened…
Seriously embarrassing. But I have no shame. Or energy.
And yes, I had to (poorly) photoshop my boobs because apparently when I fall asleep, things fall out. Now stop looking for where the photoshopping was done 🙂
Danette says
The room is really coming together, I can’t wait to see it completed…no pressure. I’m loving where it’s headed! We recently extended our house and I still haven’t put things on the wall, so scary with a whole new space. I love seeing what you do with a fresh space, takes away some of the fear 😉
Lisa Stonehouse says
I fricking love your guts. You are pure and honest. xo
Laurie says
I love that you didn’t even cut the tags off before you fell asleep in the chair! You are so real.

The last picture is why I totally love you and your blog!
Kristal says
I absolutely love the last picture. What a great capture of motherhood.
Trisha says
I really like you!! Like a really good friend, like you. And this LAST picture is the BOMB! I have a few of these too and they make me laugh… alot! xo
Hannah@TheErohs says
That last picture is priceless! Kudos to Jeremy for capturing it. By the way, are you still able to nurse Weston even though you are pregnant? I nursed my oldest through my second pregnancy and am now tandem nursing them both. She really only comfort nursed since I didn’t have any milk after about the 3rd month. I was just curious if your situation is different. 🙂

I don’t comment much but when I first started to read this post I wanted to comment on how much I wanted to reach through the screen and pinch that baby’s thighs. Then as I scrolled down I was going to comment on how every time I see your baby with his mustache binky I literally giggle out loud. But the last picture…wow. You two are O-U-T! Like, sawing logs-drooling out. Love it!!
Courtney says
Love the last picture. Have a few of those myself! What does Will have his toys in now that Weston has the toy bin? Also, love your hallway rug!!
Ann says
Oh girl I swear when I was pregnant with my third child I could fall asleep playing volleyball. I love it. I was supposed to be caring for my two other children and no matter what, I could not stay awake. This is priceless and common.
Meghan says
We got a chair very similar to this 2 years ago and we love it! Does yours swivel too? Wouldn’t seem like a feature that would be that important but it is nice. Now with baby #3 on the way we are trying to figure out what to put in his/her room.
Shannon says
I LOVE that chair. I’ve been kicking myself the last few weeks for going the cheap route of a walmart glider with separate footrest. Not sleepable. I’ve already promised myself for number two (who isn’t in the oven or even on the menu yet… er, I think you know what I mean?) I will be getting something that rocks/glides and reclines. And is uber comfortable.
Kim says
Please tell me more about your storage in the nursery. I love the cubicles with drawers and need something just like that for my kids’ toys. Tell me more!
Mindy says
I love you for posting that picture of yourself on the internet. I mean, I already enjoyed your blog, but that really sealed the deal for me. And you’re the queen of boy nurseries.
Rebecca says
I really wanted that chair but couldn’t justify the cost. Even though it would be used a lot. Hope you are enjoying, for nursing and napping.
Dana @ House*Tweaking says
In my neck of the woods, boobs popping out of tops sans encouragement is something to be congratulated for. So, congratulations!
Sleeping Weston looks like his sleeping mama 😉
Shelly Smith says
I love you Katie Bower! Seriously hilarious!
Heather G says
Oh my gosh it is so difficult to find the perfect nursery chair! I’ve found searching online to be especially tough. I may have to go to BRU and check that one out!
I agree about the “finished nursery” concept too. Thank you for gently pointing out how it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. Makes those of us stuck renting for now feel better too. 🙂
Laura M says
You crack me up! Before I read the text, I looked at the picture. Something immediately looked off! Too funny.
Marci says
I totally understand what you mean! I have a two month old (and am nursing him and his older brother) and I swear I wake up every morning with my boobs hanging up. I never remember pullin ’em out, it just happens when you sleep, haha!
Aana says
Ahh… I absolutely love the last picture, I have moment like these too. I have 61/2 and 4 month old at home, moment like this tells you what happen when moms stop for a moment …. they 1…2… and lights out:)

I was going to be impressed if you fall asleep with everything covered. That picture is hilarious. I love the chair. Can’t wait to see what you do with the nursery. Thanks for keepin it real!
Rebie says
Katie – can you post a link to the chair. I can’t find it on the Babies R’Us website. Looks stylish and comfy and I’m on the hunt for a new chair for my baby girl due in Feb. Thanks!
Helena says
Your stories are always funny. Take all the time you need getting the room ready. Looking forward to the finished project.

In all the years I’ve been reading this blog, that last picture has to be your best work yet. Thanks for being real, I laughed because I’ve been in that same situation many times.

Ha ha, you crack me up and yes, I was totally trying to work out where the photoshopping was done. 😛

I am in love with that huge “W”. It’s so cool!

Fantastic laugh, cheers. All that mountain, sorry mattress climbing wore the little man out. Even the tache fell out of his mouth.
My niece walked at 7 months – by 10 months she was climbing and by 12 months she could outrun my mum which made nappy changes a bit tricky for mum.
Tanja says
Thanks for sharing that last photo, it’s so damn cute!
Sarah F. says
I think I just tried out that chair at Babies R Us and liked it a lot, but I couldn’t figure out how to recline it! There was no obvious lever and pushing on the back didn’t work either.
Shelley @ Green Eggs and Hamlet says
The pic of you and Weston sleeping is so sweet! That is totally, totally something I do all the time (although sans baby, I don’t have one yet).
Kendra says
What crib mattress did you get?
Samantha says
Love the chair and especially love that last pic! So priceless and real! 🙂
Brittney Saffell says
Super cute chair! I am sure the room will be adorable whenever you finish 🙂 Thank you for sharing the chair! I have been hunting for an affordable (aka under $500) nursery glider/rocker/recliner/cute combo and haven’t had that much luck! This might just be the winner! Were there other color options?
Taylor says
I do believe the girls hanging out is a part of motherhood. My mother regularly photoshops my cleavage out of pictures. 😉 lol Great post. Baby #2 is due in a little over a week and I have nothing ready for the nursery. You make me feel a little bit better about that!
Jillian {Her Split Ends} says
hahahahahahaha….i love you…..hahgahah. that was hilarious. (and i love the chair…good find!!)
Tessa says
Ah ha ha! That sleeping pic is hilarious! True motherhood.

I’m in love with this room!! I absolutely adore the faux brick wall with the white wash look!! And the color of grey is perfect!! I also have a son named Weston who is 4.5 and I always check eBay for stuff with his name on it , especially vintage. I came across this adorable remake of an old map of the town of Weston, CT and I just wanted to share. 😉 I hope you’re able to see it via the below link. I promise this is not solicited or spam of any kind (not even canned
Crystal Barnes says
The last picture is pretty much the best customer review one could ask for. My one demand is also a chair for the nursery for this baby. We had a hand me down recliner/rocker in our last one, and it gave me headaches every single time I used it. It got sold and now we’re on the hunt for a new one for when baby #2 arrives. Problem is the good ones are always so expensive. Good to know they let you use the 20% off coupon, though.
Kate S. says
Last photo: I love you and your photo realness. You are the best. This is why you stand out to me as so wonderful and dynamic.
Angela says
I cannot handle how awesome the final picture it. I love how the room is coming together.

I am very new to your blog…and loving it! I’m wondering about the brick wall in the nursery. Is it real brick or wallpaper? I’m swooning over it, and would love to know more about it. Maybe there is a post I missed?
Marie says
Haahhahaiohihoiha! Thanks for keepin’ it REAL Momma!
Susan says
Where is the shelf/drawer unit from in Weston’s room?
Emily says
My husband and I just brought our exact same chair home today! Totally not what I thought we’d get, but we love it. Baby girl is due in January and I know it’ll get much use!
Tori says
Where did you get the huge wooden “W” ? I love it!
Nicole L says
We are on the prowl for a rocker like that. I might be completely sold after seeing how comfy it must be. Also, I’m loving that you have no shame. You’re kind of my hero right now.
Traci says
I love the way Weston’s room is coming along! I totally love the brick wall! I don’t know how you have enough energy to get out of the bed. I am 34 weeks pregnant and I have a 15 month old and it is all I can do to throw a load of clothes in the washer and make a sandwich for lunch. I think I’d have to hire help if I had more than one running around!
Ana Silva says
You are hilarious!
Nicole says
You have no idea how perfectly timed this post is for me! I am pg with #2, and we need a new rocker… We bought an Ikea chair the first time around and added a glider ourselves, and while it works great, it is too short and doesn’t provide any neck/upper back support. Big mistake, especially while nursing all night. So, I have been on the lookout for a glider with the exact features you mentioned that won’t cost us a grand. BRB here we come!
Katie says
The lever is on the inside of the right hand arm rest…right next to the cushion. I think they hide them now to make it look less ‘recliner-y’. When you want to unrecline, you are supposed to use your legs.

I just stopped nursing. At about ten and half months, Weston decided to wean. My milk supply had been slowly dwindling (he’s a great eater but was never a comfort nurser) so when he started solids, the slow progression to weanship started. Then one day I sat down to nurse him to sleep and he fought me to get off and just have the paci. Then it happened every single time I tried to nurse. I could latch him on but then he would be done in five seconds and start crying and fighting. After two weeks of fighting, I just decided that it was probably time to stop forcing him. He never asked for it again.
It was really sad for me because I am goal oriented and wanted to make it to a year but I also realize that he is bigger than most 1 year olds (he wears 18 month to 2T clothing at 11 months) so it could just be that he developed out of it. I thought it was a milk strike…but I was really consistent and realized that for him, he wants wrestling time more than nursing time…and I want him to not have negative associations with me trying to hold him close.

I’ll have to post about it. We just switched their toy bins. We had switched Will’s white cubbies with Weston’s dark wood cubbies. It matched Will’s crib better.

O my…that last pic of you and Weston is too much haha! We’re watching a recorded episode of SNL and I’m laughing my face off as I read this post. My husband asked why I was laughing so hard because the sketch at the time wasn’t that funny. It was just dying over that pic. You’re hilarious lady! Loved this.

Just a quick comment of love here. I really enjoyed this post, but the last picture made me smile & I forgot what the original topic of the post was. Anyone with kids, has been there, done that! I love that you will just put yourself out there for the internet. That is the most natural picture on a blog, I think I’ve ever seen. It makes me smile that your house is filling with babies and you are enjoying it in all it’s ups and downs. PS-spotted Jer’s knee in the mattress pic, no photoshopping there! Haha.
Hilary says
That chair is perfect.

Cute pictures, but the first one about made me pass out.
First, let me say that last week I found my 14 month old sitting on the BACK of the toilet. So I’m not judging. But please, read this:

And feel free to moderate this comment and not post it, I just wanted to pass it on to someone else with glass in their house.

“…And yes, I had to (poorly) photoshop my boobs because apparently when I fall asleep, things fall out. Now stop looking for where the photoshopping was done 🙂 ”
LOLLLLL! Yep, it’s exactly what I did! When I read you’d photoshoped the picture I scrolled up just to see it. I didn’t notice it the first time around. But, I still couldn’t really see it, so I scrolled back down and promptly read the next sentence: “Now stop looking for where the photoshopping was done.” HA! I laughed-out-loud — perfect timing … comedic genius!!
Thanks for the laugh and for the honest pictures! We are all human! 🙂

Two cribs on the go, you ROCK momma! I completely agree that the rocker is a splurge item, I’ve clocked so many hours in ours. Can’t wait to see what great ideas you come up with for the room… give yourself a rest though. The nurseries are more about the mommy than the baby anyways. Keep on rockin’ <3
Katie says
That’s a tragedy for sure. And let me assure you…that mattress can’t balance like that…and Weston climbing up there and sitting is a very sarcastic joke (my husband is holding him from behind and you can kind of see his hairy head to the side of Weston). I would encourage you that the article did say it was a freak accident…so that should be comforting even through hurting for that family.

Katie says
He’s officially weaned. I tried to get through the ‘strike’ but I think that he was just done. We tried for two weeks after his first ‘fit’ and it never lasted more than about five seconds before he melt down and tried to throw himself out of my arms. In the end, I think we were both done because my milk supply was so pathetically low at this point and he was never a comfort nurser anyway. I am just glad we got to do it 10 and a half months…five of those being pregnant.

Allison says
Ha ha! That is exactly how I woke up yesterday morning after having to prop my stuffy 7 week old up all night. LOVE the glider. I swear I sleep in it more than in the bed.
Quick question, where did you get the white cubby cabinet? I know Pottery Barn Kids has one similar to that, but I was hoping for a less expensive option for the baby’s room. Yes, he is 7 weeks old and his nursery is a blank slate. I figure it will be done by the time he is five. I guess that is what happens with your third boy. 😉

Your point about the room not needing to be perfect and the way you said it is the most brilliant thing I’ve seen online in weeks. Haha. Your baby has a room of his own. I’d say he’s doing pretty well.
Tara says
Your kids rooms always look like they are from a very posh Pottery Barn – I mean that in a very good, and very jealous, way. I LOVE how you can pull things together and it all seems so natural and effortless. I live very far away (Canada), but if you want to pack the kids in the car and take a little road trip, I’d gladly babysit in exchange for advice and some help with my place. Let me know; I’ll clear my schedule.

Loved the last photo! And I’m right there with you on the “it all falls out” comment… my younger son is still part-time cosleeping and nursing, and I can’t tell you how often I wake up to find that I never reattached the nursing tank. Not exactly the best image for my poor husband 😉

Quick Question, who makes that chair?!?! I love it and it is exactly what I’m asking for from my husband for Christmas (we are expecting our first in May). I looked online and I couldn’t find it on the BabiesRUs website! 🙁

Bless you. We are starting the process of working on our 2nd, and while pretty much everything remains to be done (conception, first, natch, but also deciding shared room with our first or give up our guest room?), I am demanding a better rocker. We used the Ikea Poang rocker and I hate it with the fire of a thousand suns. For one, it doesn’t rock on carpet, at all. Grr. Thanks for pointing me to exactly what I wanted!

The last photo is so funny and I love that you included this. I am currently breastfeeding my 2 month old daughter and I fall asleep almost every time during a late night/early morning feeding, and a lot of the time I’ll be all out there (and God forbid my husband to snap a photo of that)! Hey Katie! Totally love your new chair! I’ve called two different Babies R Us’ and they can’t find the chair in their inventory. I wanted to check and see if there happened to be another manufacturer listed or a sku number (they can also look it up that way). I know it’s a long shot – but I would LOVE to order one for our nursery, too! 🙂

Do you happen to have the link for the rocker? I can’t seem to find it on their website! Maybe they don’t have it anymore. My hubs would love a reclining chair and I have searching high and low for a reasonably priced one but have had no such luck, until I saw your post! I’d love to snag one, just trying to track one down! Maybe I’ll go see if they have it in store…

I wish I had found a rocker like that when I was decorating my twins nursery! It would have been perfect, color too! Instead I ended up buying a cheapo IKEA poang chair that hardly gets used. And one of them still needs to be rocked to sleep. Whomp whomp.

Thanks! When we go back to actually register (my hubby is dragging his feet!) I’ll check it out again. Or swallow my pride and ask a sales person for help. 🙂

Love his room so far. It is huge! I ordered a second rocker for our new baby too. My son was also really attached to his and I also didn’t love it (handme down). We bought one really similar to the style of Weston’s chair. Surprisingly after looking all over it is from walmart. I can’t believe how beautiful it is. It also reclines, glides, swivels.

Hi Katie,
I was wondering how you get Weston to sleep. Does he take a pack or just go down w/o any help? I ask bc my daughter is the same age as him but she needs to be nursed to sleep and I’m dreading figuring out what to do once I try to wean her at 1 yr!
Asna says
And by ‘pack’ I meant ‘pacifier’ lol
Katie says
AWW! I wish you would have hollered at me! You should have come by! The boys would have loved to meet yours officially (we still play with that finger paint you sent ages ago so it would be so fun for Will to put a name to the face of the twins!). And I wish I was as effective as you at finishing rooms…and man why didn’t I think of photoshopping in a tat…something fun…like a couple tiger claws on the ta-tas!

Katie says
We decided that the best way would be the time to transition when they start solids…so right around 8 to 9 months they usually start with more proteins. So that is why we choose that time. What we do is nothing really different than before. Instead of having a late night feeding, we would nurse that last time before bed (around 10) and then do the bedtime routine and instead of laying them down in the pack n play in our room, we would lay them down in the nursery. Then if they woke up, we would just do the whole bedtime routine again…rocking, praying, humming and down to bed. It worked for us because the reinforcement was ‘this is what we do before we lay in bed’ and so they got all the cues. Once we did the routine, we walked out…no more, no less. Also, you might want to be sure the temperature in their room is warm enough…the babies always are a few degrees warmer next to mom and dad and they like that.

He has been doing really great with that…sleeping from about 9 till 7:30 without needing anything. Our bedtime routine has been pretty much the same…but he has been transitioning to longer and longer afternoon naps and shorter morning naps so I think that we will be going to one nap soon so that might be helping with the nighttime sleeping.

It’s a brown grey. In some lights it is more one than the other. In natural light, it looks more grey but in fluorescent or tungsten it is more brown. And it’s made by Best Chairs Inc.

I was just in babies r us yesterday and found this chair thinking it might be the one. When I went online to find it, your blog was the only thing that came up. You’ve convinced me. I m wondering though, you mentioned it is a gray brown color. Did you get a different fabric or did you order the same one than you saw in the store? If so you’re right, in the store in its gray but your pictures show it more brown. Let me know! Thanks so much,
Katie says
I ordered the only one they had – it is more of a gray in certain lights…compared to our walls, it looks a little more brown probably because of the undertones.

Hi there — My husband and I just tried out this exact chair and I came home to look for reviews and came across this post (I was excited b/c I regularly read your site anyways!) — Do you still like it as much as you did originally? Please let me know!
Katie says
I do! We use it everyday at least three times a day and we still love it. I do wish it was easier to move (but that’s probably only because whenever I vacuum it seems like it weighs a bazillion pounds) and I have yet to find the perfect lumbar pillow for it (I need that extra back support with this pregnancy) but other than that…it’s still dreamy 🙂

great to hear – thank you so much!

I just bought this chair today using the 15% coupon and my reward dollars!! I am soo excited! I bought the protection plan too just in case. Have you felt that the cushion has sagged or lost a bit of its shape?
Katie says
Not at all. We did ScotchGuard the entire thing (which might actually void the protection plan but we didn’t purchase that).

I just bought the same chair because the one I wanted is now back ordered with no end in site… I was so bummed but your blog was the only thing that came up when I googled the kersey recliner as far as reviews and I feel much much better now! Thank you 🙂 I get to pick it up next week!
Cressie says
I, just as many others, ran across your site while searching for reviews of the Kersey recliner. You are the ONLY review out there! I see you are still happy with the chair… My only concern is the fabric. Do you know if it’s 100% cotton? The store was no help in giving me this info! Ugh! Love your blog! 😉
Katie says
I don’t know. The picture I have of the tag doesn’t say. Sorry I can’t be more help!

Hi there,
I really enjoyed your post, and the last picture is really making me happy. I’m pregnant with my first and I’ve been searching for a glider forever. I really would like something that can support my head during nursing. Would you mind telling me how tall you are?
Thanks!
Katie says
5’6″ sometimes 5’7″ if I don’t slouch 🙂

Hi! Getting 2 of these chairs now that I read your review. One for living room one for nursery (one day we will put both in living room). Wanted to ask though, what color is the gray wall paint because it looks great with the chair & looks very neutral. Every gray sample color that I paint on our nursery wall looks purple to me! Thanks 🙂
Katie says
The gray wall is Metropolitan by Benjamin Moore.

Hi! I was doing a search for review on this chair. Just wondering how it is still holding up?
Thanks!
Katie says
It’s still holding up great!

Danielle says
How is the Kersey recliner holding up? Im considering purchasing for my nursery and there aren’t many reviews on it but I love that it reclines! Does it resist stains stains well?
Katie says
It is holding up well but we did ScotchGuard it so that may be a reason why? Not sure. Also, since it is in the nursery, it doesn’t get exposed to a whole lot of dirt.

Hi Katie! I am looking to buy this chair and am curious how tall your husband is, and if his head/neck lays on it comfortably while sitting or reclining? I am 5’10” and hubby 6′ and we are having problems finding ones that are high enough in the back. This chair is a good price and we are hoping it will work for us, but we live 3 hours away from any babies r us store, so we have to order online without knowing how it fits…. We are definitely waiting until the last minute, considering the baby is due in 1.5 WEEKS!
Katie says
Jeremy said that it is definitely comfortable but his head hits right at the top…like any taller it would be not so comfy. He is just under six foot.

Hi there I am considering this chair but I am wondering where the handel to recline is? I don’t see it. Is it a push back or on the inside next to your leg?
Katie says
It does have a handle inside the seat cushion and arm rest to release the foot part and then it does just collapse with your legs pushing it under 🙂
