Got a few bucks and a couple minutes? Then this easy clock can change your life.
Not really but I’m good with exaggerating. like really good.
And I’m not exaggerating about one thing…it literally cost me less than $5 and was REALLY easy.
So here’s how I did this rocket-science….first buy a cheapo clock at Walmart (or a yard sale or a thrift store or whatever). Mine was $3.97 and then I needed one piece of scrapbook paper. This one wasn’t my favorite but I was trying to get a certain color scheme so it works for now.
Do not steal the clock. Jesus is watching.
Okay…now that I legally obtained a clock, I unscrew the screws on the back. There were six. That’s irrelevant.
CAREFULLY. I repeat. CAREFULLY remove the front (which includes a pane of glass)…
Then it’s time to stop time. Literally.
Remove the hands carefully. That sounds like a surgeon move. Or a piece of advice that someone should have given Miley before the VMAs.
Break out the scrapbook paper and grab the plastic front piece (the glass front will need to be removed first!).
Then using a pencil, I just simply traced the inside of the front plastic frame onto the paper and cut out the line (on the line? cut out the circle on the line? with the line? I feel like I’m overthinking that.).
To punch the little circle, I laid the scrapbook circle over the clock and the little ‘stem’ that is still popped up, I gently marked with a dot. And then using a circle-punch tool (aka a screwdriver), I pushed through the dot.
I used an Elmer’s glue stick to attach the new front. There is no science to this step. Just shmear and press.
Then I just put every thing back together and bada boom…a customized clock.
Not bad for under $5, huh?! I think I need one of these in every room of the house. I have no concept of time. This might help…probably not but a girl could dream 🙂

Holy crudmoly! This is just the idea I needed for an old clock that’s been sitting in my closet for a couple of years.. I was just contemplating yesterday whether I was going to donate it or attempt to vamp it up . Thanks for the inspiration !

Love it!

Thank you for this. My ugly cheap-o IKEA clock has been driving me crazy every time I look at it. This is just what I needed to see. Why didn’t I think of this? (Thank you, again!)

Thx, Katie! Simple but genius!

Ha, I’ve totally done this for two clocks at my place! I found that it’s useful to put tiny dots where the hr markers are, even if they’re just in light pencil, but at least then you can set the time more easily. For one of the two I’ve made I did put darker dots to more easily tell the time, they’re still way less prominent than the paper backing unless you’re really looking hard

Super cute!!!

Great idea! How cute!

I love this pattern! I’d have to hang it on the wall or something because it would roll around then I’d get confused about what the actual time is and where the numbers should be. True story – we have a custom clock that was a gift and the 10 and 11 are switched. LOL
Abby says
I’ve been wanting to do this, but I actually want to still use it to tell time. I’m stuck on how to create a new clock face on the new paper…any ideas? I don’t want to just write it in…it would look horrible.
Katie says
Maybe use scrapbook number stickers?

Wendy @ New Moms Talk says
You could also stencil-paint the numbers on it after you cut out the paper or before you do. Gently lay the frame around the paper so you know precisely how far in/out the numbers need to be.

Very nice! Love the mini makeover. 😉

Perfect timing for this, thanks.
I’ve faced this reality with our daughter’s bedroom recently. As much as I don’t like clocks, I still think she needs (one day) to learn to tell time. Yet clocks that fit “just right” in a room don’t always happen in the stores.
Megan @ Rappsody in Rooms says
Wow! I love this idea! It’s so cute! Might have to give this a shot.
Jessica G says
You should be able to run it through a printer! Just use Publisher (or something more fancy if you’ve got more skillz than I do) to create the circle size and then you can print the numbers as dark or lightly as you’d like.

I like this little project a lot! Wouldn’t have thought of it, but definitely want to try it now. Thanks Katie!

So simple, but looks so much cuter than the original 🙂 thanks for the idea!

Just in time (no pun intended) for our baby’s nursery decorating! Have been on the hunt for something cheap yet cute. This would be great and so customizable!
Vivian says
Great idea! I wonder if you could use a copier and copy the clock numbers onto the scrapbook paper! I’m a need numbers kinda gal.

Love this idea. So simple and so cute. I just pinned it so I’d remember to do this. Hmm, maybe in the bathroom so we won’t be late.

HOLY COWS I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!!
Also, “Or a piece of advice that someone should have given Miley before the VMAs.”
I nearly peed I laughed so hard (but then, I’m pregnant…but it was SO that funny).

First of all genius idea, my weekend will probably involve this.
Second, you are hilarious.
Have a great weekend

What a great idea! It’s really hard to find a nice clock or not too expensive clock. I’m going to try this. I want to try it with a larger clock. Thank you!

I LOVE this idea and have major admiration for you for coming up with this!
Don’t love the paper you picked but I don’t even care because I’m just dying to be replicating this for myself right now.
You’re awesome.

Sometimes it is the easiest little things that end up being the cutest touch in the room! This looks like one of them. 🙂

Oh I am sure that I am not the first one to do this. I’m 110% positive that others have been doing this for years.

I did this with a clock my grandmother gave me for Christmas one year. The “frame” of the clock was gorgeous but the face? Ugh. One of those bird clocks with a different bird for each hour. It actually is supposed to sing the bird’s song one the top of the each hour but the battery for that part came out right away. I didn’t want to just get rid of it, though, because, you know, my grandmother gave it to me. So I used it with the bird face for a couple of years before I thought, screw it. Imma see if I can’t perty this thing up. Worked like a charm. The first time I changed it, I used scrapbook paper. The second time, though, I used some pretty wrapping paper. both worked great and really made me love and appreciate that clock. 🙂

This is really cute, KB.
I know I threw a lil hissy fit & said I wasn’t gonna check this blog anymore but I totes lied. You’re like a part of my day…for 3 years! I can’t stop.
I want to apologize for my tart comment. You have a busy life (we all do!) & I shouldn’t be so harsh. I should be empathetic. I guess I just love your meaty posts so much that I was being a lil brat. I’m sorry. Truly.
Annie R says
So I think this is totally adorable.
Also. I think that if I owned that clock and did not have it hanging, one of my {dear, sweet} children would roll it to one side or another, thus making me think it was 11 or 1 o’clock instead of noon….. Just sayin….
Mel says
What a good idea! I’ve used scrapbook paper to create easy framed art, but I never thought of this! Thanks Katie 🙂
Katie says
No prob. I understand that sometimes people have rough days and say things that are a little salty. I appreciate your coming back to apologize and comment though…it really was like a little ray of sunshine in my day. Things around here hopefully will get a little easier (if I could just get these dang virus’ to clear up!) and you know me and holidays! I can’t wait!

I am so glad you posted this!! My husband and I just moved and painted our living room and I’ve been searching for the perfect clock. Now I can just make one! Not sure why it didn’t dawn on me until I read this. Thanks for the brain reboot! 🙂
