This past week we helped some sweet friends move. They had outgrown their starter home and so this was their first big move and I think we all were super excited for them. It’s funny what things get you excited for others as an adult. Like when you are a teen, you get excited about going to Six Flags…..now that sounds a little like torture. With a side of whiplash. And thigh chafing. In college, you are thrilled for others when they have enough gas money to drive to Panama City and crash in a roach motel. And then later, you get excited when friends get married or buy the latest television. Now? It’s all vacuums, pressure cookers and neighborhoods with sidewalks and lots of children. I’m telling you….I’m old.
(we snapped photos with their old house to send during their closing)
SO when my friend asked me if I would recommend some of my favorite home related items for her new house, it took me a hot second to come up with a list. Of course, in any new home….I would first recommend getting new rugs.
I know this sounds crazy but all rooms are slightly different and so even though your existing furniture may work….the rugs probably won’t. The room may require you to get a different size and orientation and so it’s never a bad idea to sock away a couple hundred bucks for new rugs in your new digs. I am sharing with you the ones I recommended for her since she likes Amazon and wanted a big 9×12 under $300 in grays, tans or blues.
Along with the rugs, you probably will want to have a way to get those puppies to lay flat and to look plush. We have a very inexpensive rug in our living room but it looks great because of the rug pad. We have this same rug pad under our rugs and it is a game changer!
And then I also listed some of my favorite hangers (I am slowly changing out ALL our hangers to these ones and I love the kids size version and the adult ones!). Also – since our friends are rehanging their tvs, they asked about a solution for cords. This is the one that we recommend and bought for our garage tv. It’s super easy to use and install and helps hide those unsightly cords.
When it comes to clean up – moving means a whole lot of cleaning. Unless you hire a cleaning company to come in between the days you close and the day you move in (which in this case was THE SAME DAY), the cleaning is going to land on that never ending TO-DO list. I love our carpet shampooer, our battery operated vacuum and I have my heart set on the mopping robot that I shared above. Now if only I can buy a robot that puts away the laundry 🙂
Last comes some serenity items. I think having a tiny bit of organization makes me feel so much peace (which we all need in moves!). This list is items that I love and cherish and sparks joy. When I pull open a drawer and it is all organized….JOY. So of course I had to include drawer organization items. And I realized while we were unpacking her home that she didn’t have any hooks – these over the door hooks would have come in handy till she decided on exactly where she was gonna be putting holes in her walls. And as far as scents go – one of my absolute favorite candles – the Capri Blue from Anthro just came out with the essential oil version of their candle scent! Nothin says serenity like this smell y’all.
That’s it! That’s all I got for now and I hope that you guys all have a wonderful day and hopefully you find something on this list – whether you are moving, staying, or just trying to survive the summer!
