Cool Weather Decor Trends for your Home

We are FINALLY getting cooler weather!  Last week it finally dipped down to 70 degrees and the angels rejoiced.  And when I say angels, I mean my armpits.  Girl, I have been sweating like a linebacker during two-a-days.  It’s not attractive.  But with fall weather comes a fresh new feel!  As the crisp chill surrounds us, I long for crackling fires and cozy blankets and all the smells of peppermint and cinnamon.  I’m loving all the change that comes with the cooler weather and the falling leaves and I want my home decor to reflect that!  I know we just passed through Halloween unscathed but really – let’s talk fall before Thanksgiving and I promise I will do my darnedest to keep Christmas to after the big feast (no promises though!).

Here are the ways that I try to decorate for cooler weather and the specific items and trends that I see big for 2018.

• GO PLAID

I love plaid for fall and winter.  The problem that I have is that I don’t want to change my entire space to accommodate a traditional red plaid pillow when there is NOTHING else red in the room except my rosacea.  So when it comes to including this pretty fall trend, think about the colors that you already have in a space.

Our living room is blue and green and creams and tans.  So I bought a plaid in navy and guys, it immediately feels more fall!  Plaid has a way of conjuring up those cool weather vibes.  It can be crisp or traditional, tartan or with only two tones, the options are endless.

• BREAK OUT THE TOUCHABLES

Remember that movie The Untouchables?  Well this box office smash hit for fall is called The Touchables and it is all things fur, cable knit and velvet.

I love love love these three things for the cooler months and I have found some of the most affordable finds!  Here are my favorite velvet covers (I got the 24″ in army green and put a 26″ feather insert inside).

Here is a great fur pillow cover that is great for an accent chair and here is my go-to pom pom cable knit throw blanket that basically begs to be touched.

I also like to incorporate these little touches other areas – velvet pumpkins, vases that look like they have cable knit, etc.

Basically you can use these in small touches around your home and it instantly feels cozier and warm and more appropriate for the season.

• WARM SCENTS

You know those mugs that say “Pumpkin Spice Everything”?

Well I don’t believe that.  I do not want pumpkin spice toilet paper.  Or pumpkin spice toothpaste.  Or even pumpkin spice eggs.  Sorry.  Hard pass on that one Starbucks.  But I’ll take a candle that warms up the whole room and makes it cozy and delicious.

I love the pumpkin spice but I also love a bunch of other candles for autumn transitioning into winter : Bed Bath & Beyond Leaves, Anthropologie’s Baltic Amber, anything Mulled cider, Target’s Cashmere Plum, and White Barn’s Pumpkin Pecan Waffle.  I like to use them on the coffee table, the console, even the kitchen table to get lots of delish reminders of this season.  Here are the links for more details :

• THINK “GOBBLE C”

When it comes to decor, fall is all about texture and I love including lots of texture in my faux plants, wreaths, and vases filled with stems.  So what does that have to do with GOBBLE C?

That is an initialism for my favorite fall plants and stems….grapevine, olive trees or branches, berries, birch, lambs ear, eucalyptus, and cotton branches.  They are super simple to incorporate all over your house…

I got a very small olive tree and stuck it in a basket and it makes a small unusable space a little more interesting…

Other olive branches I put in a birch covered canister and it feels like the perfect transition for fall to winter…

Birch faux candles sit in my metal lanterns beyond the sofa and it is taking me from September all the way to 2019.  I just switch out the pumpkin fillers for ornaments or berries and it will be a seamless transition.

Beyond the textured pumpkins is lambs ear filler and it adds color without making it feel overtly spring-y (is that a word?) or summery.  Also do you see the bits of grapevine on the textured pumpkin?  All ties together!

Overall there are a whole lot of other ways to make a transition into cooler weather without jumping right into the Christmas decor.  I love that other bloggers are jumping full force into it but for us, I feel like yesterday was 90 degrees and I like to keep Christmas up a bit longer afterwards.  It is all about finding what works for you and your family!
