What is a fall one rack wardrobe? It’s exactly what it sounds like….one rack of clothing that I stick to for a season.
After trying the capsule wardrobe experiment, I realized that I liked certain aspects and disliked others. My likes were:
- all the pieces went with most of the other items
- getting dressed was fast
- it made me mindful when shopping
- I liked all the items
There were also dislikes about capsule wardrobing….
- feeling guilty when I grabbed things I already owned that weren’t in my original capsule
- angry if something didn’t work with other pieces
- frustrated at the limited choices at times
- the frequency of laundry
I obviously know that it was my decision and nobody was forcing me to NOT work something else into the capsule….but since I thought of it as an experiment I didn’t want to break the “capsule rules”. The emotional frustration kinda birthed the idea that I don’t need a single stack of clothing. I wanted a whole rack. I needed more choices. And I wanted to take all the good parts of capsule wardrobing and make them work for me. And thus the one rack wardrobe was born. Is it very different than a capsule? Nope. But for me, it was the idea of putting all the items together in one area (location is EVERYTHING) helped me with time savings and effort of dressing in the morning. And the idea that I could add things was freeing. And if it only worked with one item? Who the heck cares as long as I LOVE IT. (and it had to fit on the rack!)
HOW DID IT WORK?
So here is what I did….I picked out items I loved and allowed myself to put things together on one rack that I removed from my closet. It sat outside in my room, which admittedly wasn’t the prettiest thing ever but I wanted to remove the one-rack so that the items that made the cut had to be walked out and around and hung up. That little bit of extra effort made the difference! Even to be considered ‘rack-worthy’ I had to love it….but loving it wasn’t always enough….I also had to WEAR it. I had to carefully consider if the item earned its spot on the rack and once they made the rack, it was very evident of what was worn and what wasn’t. The items I grabbed over and over, those were items that lived there. The other items (whether they were not appropriate for the weather or whatever) went back into my closet. The items that were in my closet that were weather appropriate went under strict scrutiny and I donated about 3/4 of them!
DID YOU WEAR THE ITEMS?
The items on the rack are the things I wore for the last several months and it still had all the pros of the capsule. When I bought something new, it went straight onto the rack. Long story short….I cleaned out the majority of my closet (to be honest a TON was maternity or post-maternity) and I figured out the items I love. Also I think that this was less about thinking what went together and more about the overall wardrobe and my personal style.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
I realized through this process that I love cotton and t-shirts and comfort and my cheap jeans. I love items that have texture and details and flattering necklines. I would rather buy a nice top that I wear all the time than spend money on high end pants. I came to a conclusion that my personal style falls into a broad category of “preppy all american comfortable boho”. Anyhoo…let’s get right to it and share some of these clothing items!

I can’t relate this is more like (minus these are ALL gorgeous) my regular closet. You must have a giant closet.

You’ve inspired me. I’m going to try this for fall! Love the coordinated outfit examples–very helpful for this fashion challenged chick!
Elizabeth says
I think this is a great way to recognize the items that you wear regularly vs the ones in the closet that you don’t. Also I love your style!
Rae says
I love this concept. Lots to think about as I flop my closets. Thanks!

One rack of clothes that I ACTUALLY wear for winter? That’s not my problem. My problem is getting rid of the superfluous stuff that I think I MIGHT one day wear.

This is really an entire wardrobe. I feel like if you’re a maximalist, just be a maximalist 🙂 No need to try to reverse engineer minimalism (like a capsule wardrobe) when that’s not your way.

Always excited to see more outfit ideas! 🙂
Also tell me more about your experience ordering items from Shein, please. I’ve been so tempted (hello, ridiculously affordable prices!) but am curious about quality. (I hold onto items FOREVER and get annoyed when things fall apart/wear quicker than I think they should.)

Gorgeous. I really am inspired to par down my closet. I have tons of business clothes I am keeping just in case. I have 2 dressers, a closet, and seasonal clothes. I need to par down! 🙂 Love the outfit ideas!

I think I could do this more than a capsule wardrobe or minimalist. I like variety but it could definitely help narrow down clothes I actually wear vs everything in my closet.
Katie says
Yeah I think I would hesitate if I was looking for quality…they are definitely a cheaper item with cheaper material. There have been exceptions but in general, if I was looking for a lightweight item that I would wear only a couple times (like a dress or a summery top) then Shein might be the way to go but yeah…it’s not gonna be the quality of even Old Navy and that is saying something.

Oh I am definitely a maximalist but I don’t want to have a closet stuffed to the gills (which is what I generally lean toward). This is just a “check yourself” moment in my wardrobe so that I can really identify my style since I have been in and out of at least six different sizes and rocking maternity for the last nine years!

I like it! I love how you’ve identified what you will really wear—it’s sometime hard for to me to admit to myself that what I will actually wear is different than my imagined self. 🙂

Are you and Sherry tag-teaming on blog posts this week? 😉
Katie says
Haha! It looks that way huh?! It cracks me up!

Do you intend to or everything back into your closet once you have identified what you wear; and gotten rid of the rest?
Or will you keep the “rack” out in your room and swap out clothes every season?
Katie says
I don’t know. I sorted out a lot but I haven’t been through the coming seasons to see what I would wear. I guess I will probably just designate a specific area in my closet for the ‘one rack’. That way it will be delineated but not in the room. I hope that still works.

So related to the paragraph where you were talking about feeling guilty for not following capsule “rules” – isn’t it nuts how we beat ourselves up over silly arbitrary things like that?!
Christina says
Hey — this is a really good idea!

Hi Katie! Love your choices. I’m wanting to try this concept, but I’m in the midst of having babies for the next (possibly) eight years. With all the physical changes, I’m wondering how to do this during pregnancies, or if I should just wait until after I’m done having babies. I love the idea of paring things down and having a few things that I love and wear a lot. But I’m not sure it’s practical to have a non-pregnancy wardrobe, and a maternity wardrobe? Any thoughts?
Katie says
Yes! It’s crazy how we self-inflict make believe rules and then punish ourselves mentally and emotionally for ‘breaking’ them 🙂

Katie says
I think that there are a LOT of options that can translate to BOTH. Cardigans are one area that I would definitely invest in because they are nice for both maternity and non maternity. I will say that a small versatile wardrobe during maternity years is a GREAT thing. It’s fun to try new things and just remember that your body will change SO many times and in different ways…it’s not guaranteed to fit or look good from one pregnancy to the next – so find things that you love and feel good in!

I love that you shared this! I’m thinking through my wardrobe but it after having babies I’m questioning what to keep. A maternity wardrobe is kind of a capsule in itself! For now, I’m trying to give myself some grace and slowly determine what I’m into or not.
