As most of you know, we are expecting our fifth bundle of joy this September. And since the little doll baby is officially viable, I thought it was highly appropriate to share today!
Most of you already know the gender – we revealed it a while back and celebrated with a ton of silly string….
but we wanted to share the video where we propped up a cell phone and video’ed the actual news from the doctor. Sorry about any obnoxious screaming on my part. I was in shock.
As a mom of four boys, I could not imagine anything else….I blogged about my initial reaction and I gotta say….it’s been the most overwhelmingly positive and supportive response and I can’t thank you enough. I was shocked, excited, terrified and nervous and yes, those feelings are still lingering there….but for the most part, I simply can’t wait to meet her!!! September can’t come soon enough. I want to know what she looks like and what she acts like and all the cute little newborn things….will she be tongue tied? will she have lots of hair? will she have blue eyes like Jeremy, LJ and Weston or brown like me, William and Max? will she be active like Weston or smitten like LJ or stoic like Will or cuddly like Max? I can’t wait to see Jeremy with her! I simply CAN. NOT. WAIT.
We do have a name already and we are just waiting to make sure our family knows before we share it with the masses….so stay tuned for that!
And I’m getting super excited about getting all things BABY GIRL….aka bows, blankets, dresses and such. I definitely am a little bit of a tomboy when it comes to dressing myself (I have literally one pair of heels) and I think that I’ll be reusing some of the boy clothing and tweaking it to make it a little girlie….I totally think that a plaid shirt on a little girl with a denim skirt and little knee socks would be super adorable! But I need recommendations….ON ALL THE THINGS. My style for big kids and toddlers is like Janie & Jack or Mini Boden and I love some of the pieces of the Cat & Jack lineup. But I’d really love newborn suggestions and must-haves. I don’t mind spending money if it’s for a photoshoot or a piece we use all the time but I like a diverse wardrobe for kids (some play clothes, cute jammies, photo shoot outfits, etc.) and things that are must-haves for newborns. I heard good things about the DockATot. And I really like this hospital gown (I borrowed a friend’s for LJ’s birth and loved that I could look at those photos and instantly know it was LJ’s big arrival day!).

I did reuse some of my son’s newborn clothing for my daughter – but when you have a baby girl … especially when it is the first girl after a long line of boys in the family … you get TONS of clothes because no one can resist :).
My daughter is now a toddler and best advice is to get LOTS of casual cotton sundresses. I stock up on them at a local kids consignment store for $2-$3 each. Makes an easy, instant outfit, and you can throw some leggings and a sweater on with them to transition to colder weather. So happy for you and your family!

So sweet!
Will you do one of those “10 baby names we love but will not be using” videos (now that you’ve decided on a name)?
That would be fun. 🙂

I love kissy kissy for jammies/rompers. That soft cotton and those prints-oh those prints!!! If you like Mini Boden then check out Fiream brand on Amazon. I know its a knock off…but if this might be your last/only girl it will last through the season she needs to wear it. I have a 3.5 year old boy and I get him shirts and shorts from this brand-they don’t last me two seasons (like the actual mini boden/ hanna andresson) but for the price I don’t feel that bad about it. The little dresses are sooo sweet.

I’m a new girl mom too! Your post on how you felt when finding out was EXACTLY how I felt!
Now, 3 months into being a girl’s mom and I can’t imagine it being any other way! Of course she was girl! She was exactly what our family needed!
As for recommendations…
3″ bows are the perfect size. Anything smaller just seems too small.
I adore the onsie dresses. Just as easy as a onsie but it looks like a dress. Carter’s makes some, as does J&J. The actual dresses with bloomers ride up and get all tangled when holding an in-arms baby.
I reuse a lot of boy clothes. Put a bow and some ruffle socks with it and Boom! Now it’s girly!
Trumpette socks (got mine on Amazon) are great! And so cute. And do a great job making boy hand-me-downs more girly.
Buy tights from Walmart. Not point in spending high dollar on them. The little old lady at the children’s boutique told me that!
Beeejet says
And one more suggestion – the Little Me brand (at Belk/Dillard’s) has some nicer/fancy sleepers. Still knit and comfy but with ruffles, lace etc.
Bethany R says
Wunderkin Co bows are simply the best on the market!!

If you’re looking for a bit less expensive, I love Carters/Osh Kosh, especially their 5-pack onesies (they’re skinny and stretchy and perfect under everything), and the Osh Kosh overalls–adorable 🙂

Gah, this video is so sweet!! I love it, I’m so glad you shared!
I agree with one of the above commenters that dresses are the way to go. Miriam lives in dresses and rompers and has since she was a teeny little thing. The dresses that have a onesie attached underneath are fantastic when they are tiny, because it keeps the dress from constantly riding up. Miriam does have pants/shorts and tops now, but I don’t think those are very handy until they are actually walking and playing. Until then, I just love one pieces and dresses.

I’m also due in September with my first, and had no idea you can bring in a hospital gown?? Is that standard practice? I thought you had no choice but to wear the gown they give you… please share the details!!

So, girl clothes are fun!! Old Navy is great. I get all of her bows at bargainbows.com. Buy the bow bundle, its nice having lots of color options. My girl never leave the house without a bow, just kind of a quirk I have, but my husband puts one on her everyday he gets her ready. Get the headbands, then when she gets enough hair, pop off the band, hot glue an alligator clip and you’re good to go for another couple years. I got a lot of specialty bows from Hobby Lobby too.
Also, I have older nephews, so I steal cute button ups and pair them with a pair of leggings for my girl and throw on some boots. Ali express has alot of cute baby shoes for cheap. Including fringe boots!! Shipping takes forever though. Have fun and good luck!!!

In the video your husband says he knew because your pregnancy was very different this time around. Will you post about this, it’s interesting to me, a lot of people say boys and girls pregnancys differ a lot. Just curious & congrats!

Gah! You just made me cry! So sweet, touching, all the feels. Congrats!

Our favorite “gear” has been the Jonathan Adler Rock N Play from Buy Buy Baby, the Keekaroo Peanut Changer, the Boba Wrap, and the Lille Baby carrier.
For clothes: Boden, Hanna Andersson, Cath Kidston, Beaufort Bonnet, Smocked Auctions, Kissy Kissy, Feltman Brothers, Nordstrom.

That video bout made me cry. How sweeeeet.

I know the feeling of all boys all time. My dad and stepmom have 11 grandkids in 27 years, with only the first grandchild being a girl. And she has always been the biggest tomboy. Go figure. Blessings to you and your family!

My daughter wears my son’s old baby pajamas. He’s 3, she’s 7 months. We are usually the only one who sees them and plus they are soft already :). I also reused some neutral pants/onesies and socks. The only new thing that I did differently was buy a Baby K’tan wrap and my daughter LOVES it and sleeps instantly. Someone bought us a mamaroo but she didn’t really like it, so if you want to buy it… I kid! (Not really please get it out of our house ) My daughter was smaller than my son too, maybe this will be true for you too!
Heather says
Y’all are so cute! Anything with bloomers already attached (think skorts almost!) I always loose the matching bloomers!
April says
I had my one and only girl almost 4 years ago. I am more into dressing her like a little girl (not too frilly and not too tomboy either). I find the hardest thing with girls is finding shorts that aren’t too short, even for toddlers. The brands that I love are found at a lot of dept. stores. They are the Rare Editions, OshKosh, J Khaki (Belk) and Old Navy and Gap. I have found some online boutique stores that I really love for my girl. The outfits come in sets and they include a clip bow to match. I love Ruffle Girl. The quality is really great too.

I was more nauseous this time…in the past, I would get sick feeling but this was definitely more extreme. I thought it was because of my age or just because every single pregnancy is different. I never threw up though 🙂

You can bring one in to our hospital but it requires that it has access in the back and on both shoulders so definitely check with wherever you deliver. They may have different requirements. I would have to nix the ribbon on the one with the link.

I liked some of the boy clothes better than girl clothes, so I would just stick a bow or bows in their hair and call it a day! My girls have never been mistaken for boys either!
Megan says
My one recommendation: Get the DockATot. It is worth every penny and more! My third baby is 2.5 months old and has slept awesome in it from the day we brought him home from the hospital.
Sheri says
Oh goodness, make sure that you register/buy the Trumpette socks. I got them as a shower gift and didn’t understand why, but since the littles don’t wear shoes, those little Mary Jane socks made my heart go pitter patter for months! Afton had them on every day! Even the ones that look like Converse would be adorable for a little tomboy <3
I loved the bubble rompers while my baby was in diapers. I kinda blubbered when it was time to send those on to the next little ones at Kid to Kid – speaking of, I think they may have some of those consignment stores near you and I've had GREAT luck at them with little girl stuff! Other places I've loved: Gymboree, Carter's, Old Navy, Oshkosh has the BEST little overalls/ overalls skirt combos for little girls! Target has some surprisingly amazing stuff that I've used for a lot of my impromptu girlie photo shoots!
A little trick for the bow barrettes that a hairdresser told me was to get the tiny rubber bands as anchors. Downside is that there's a little breakage, but it'll keep one of those hair bows in. When it's time to take one out, use a seam ripper to cut it out instead of pulling it – I have one upstairs and downstairs to cover any scenario with that stuff =)
Can't wait to hear your naming story! They are my favourite <3

Love this sweet video! Nextdirect.com has adorable girl clothes that are not expensive and are really good quality (plus 2 day shipping thank you very much) I also usually check the boy sections for my girls…often similar clothing but cheaper
Kali says
Oh Katie, congrats! That video gave me goosebumps. I have two little girls and am a bit of a tomboy myself but love, love, LOVE Matilda Jane clothes. They’re expensive but they always have great sales and the clothing holds up. You definitely get what you pay for and can mix and match everything. Check it out and report back. Even just there ruffle pants are the CUTEST! Otherwise H&M has great, inexpensive stuff. Just know it runs small … one day they’ll come up with a universal sizing system I swear!
Jasmine says
My newborn sweetie stayed in carters onesies. Now she also had growth spurts and outgrew their sizes as well. So if baby runs big it may not be long. I ordered many bows from Instagram stores because they were cheaper in bulk. Get one or two. My daughter hated them then loved them then rips them out at the end of the day. See if she likes them first. Boy shorts are longer then girl shorts so sometimes she’s in those since she’s tall. Oh and Janie and Jack is awesome and true to size. Love them. It will be a fun adventure! Enjoy!

Congratulations! I’m so happy for you! I’m your opposite, in that being a girl mom is super natural to me, but I think would freak out and not what to do if we had a boy. (I also want all of the babies, so hopefully God will bless us with a little blue bundle of joy eventually ). So, I wanted to share my favorite places to buy pretty things…. my favorite sleepers are from paty inc. they are super light and soft. They also make precious newborn bonnets. It’s what we brought our second home in. For special occasions I am obsessed with Well Dresses Wolf. They make the most beautiful classic dresses with exquisite details.

I had my boy first, girl second, and was SO excited to enter the girl shopping arena! I do have several nieces so got a lot of hand-me-downs, I would tap in to that because it’s so easy to spend a ton of money and they grow SO fast. My first girl purchases, which I still love, included: Little Unicorn muslin cotton blankets ( strawberries and pale roses are my 2 favorites), Kate’s Bow Shop on Etsy ( the nylon bands are so soft and stretchy that baby girl doesn’t even know they are on), Rosie Pope brand shoes and prints are so sweet ( I bought the blue heart Mary Janes and they are so so special and comfy)
Allison says
Congratulations on another healthy baby! Can’t wait to “meet” her and see your family interact with a baby girl. When my daughter was born (my firstborn), my mom came to stay with us during those initial days home from the hospital. I was overwhelmed with emotion as I sat, holding my baby beside my mom, because I had a vision of myself caring for MY daughter one day as she welcomes her first baby home. It was a full-circle realization, even though it’s still a couple decades away.
On a less sentimental note, my daughter loves casual (chambray, cotton, etc) dresses, and I love that they double as tunics the next season.

Tea collection has great girl clothes (says a mom of a toddler boy; they also have the best graphic tees!). If I ever have a girl, I’m going to put her in all the great graphic tee’s I’ve gotten for my son (sea turtles, lemurs, elephants)!
Kali says
Oh! Yes! I forgot about Tea! They have great girls stuff!

This had me crying “like a little baby” too! So special and sweet. Im lucky enough to have two beautiful daughters, the love is beyond words. Enjoy mumma xx

I’m probably going to be the only voice of dissent – but, for the love of all that is holy, NOOOOO to hair bows for little girls!!! Each and every single one that I’ve ever seen has looked horrendous – ‘like a pimple on a pumpkin’ as the saying goes!
Kellie says
With my first girl (first grandchild on both sides) we got TONS of cute clothes, but after she was born I realized most of it is not practical. So with our second girl I got rid of most of it and stuck with cute onesies and pjs for the newborn stage. Next summer, rompers that button easily for diaper changes are the BEST and there are some super cute ones out there! My girls are 5 and 3 now and basically live in light weight summer dresses this time of year. H & M usually has some cute options. We buy little Jumping Bean biker shorts in several colors to go underneath them. It helps with modesty when they’re hanging upside down at the park, haha!
My third child is a boy and I love dressing him, but I still have to resist the cute baby girl clothes/accessories when we go through Target! And fun fact: both times I met you at a YHL book signing I was pregnant with my 2nd and then 3rd! 🙂
Anna says
Pippa and Julie make the cutest dresses for girls. All of my daughter’s (she’s two) fancy occasion dresses have come from them. You can often find them at great prices at Nordstrom Rack or on Amazon. I bought her a blue dress for my Dad’s birthday, and at least half a dozen people asked me where I bought it and commented that they’d like one in their size. I can’t say enough good things about them.
I’m also a big fan of See Kai Run shoes for both boys and girls.
Laura W says
Just coming to post this! I love Tea Collection for both boys and girls, but I think their selection for baby girl is a little bit more varied. I love all of my daughters Tea clothes and they are well made so I can now see my niece in them handed down!

I just had my 2nd girl (boy, girl, girl for us). I was 80-90% certain I was having a boy though! It was so much like my boy pregnancy but worse. I was completely shocked when she was born!
Which brings me to my pregnancy symptoms vary by time of year theory. My 1st was due in may, and my 3rd in April, so with these I had to deal with morning sickness in the heat of summer which maybe made it worse… It doesn’t explain how I had more heartburn though!

First off, that was the sweetest video that brought tears to my eyes. Also, I totally LOVE your accents. I’m sure that’s annoying to hear but living I. Washington, we have none of that. I’ve written to you a couple of times about our journey to becoming parents and our newborn outfit that our daughter Kennady wore home from the hospital said “Worth the Wait”. I kind of feel that would be perfect for you guys seeing as you’ve hoped and wished for a little girl for awhile. Anyway, that’s my two cents 🙂 Oh and I would recommend making a fun tulle tutu for a newborn shot. I made ours on an elastic band with three tulle colors. It was so adorable with all the newborn wrinkles. So so happy for you all!!

What a cute outfit idea! That is adorable 🙂

I’ve bought some rompers for my daughter and friends’ babies from Bailey’s Blossoms and they are so cute and such a great price! Totally not connected with them at all, I’ve just loved the things I’ve gotten from them and they make such cute picture session outfits!
Bre B. says
Oh and I had to share one other thing I loved when I had a newborn! This was a trick that a grandma told me and it totally worked. I made a bunch of teeny tiny bows out of super thin ribbon and you can attach them to even a bald baby (my girl had lots of hair and it works with either) by pressing a small amount of corn syrup on the bow and then pressing it on their head. Sounds silly but it totally holds the bow in place and a newborn girl with a tiny gold bow in her hair is absolutely the cutest. They make a glue for this purpose (can’t remember the name but it’s all natural) but the corn syrup does the trick and washes right out with a little water.
