OH MY GOODNESS! You guys. I am super excited for today! It’s because TODAY is the day where I get to share all these super fun videos that we filmed on how to do just about EVERYTHING when it comes to stain.
I am a firm believer in the idea of “if I can do it, anyone can”. It’s true. Most DIY is easy enough for children to do…if only they were better about safety equipment 🙂 And I think that sometimes we just get nervous and would rather learn from a teacher because that is what we have been trained to do our whole lives…we learn from teachers! Well, let me be your teacher today because staining is SO simple and it provides the finish that makes our pieces look so good. So if it’s something you bought from a store, a thrifted item that needs tweaking, or a new unfinished piece of furniture – just follow these EASY techniques and be on your way to a more beautiful home!
These videos cover all the basics – everything from how to stain to whitewashing! I’ll share some more detailed photos later and a recap of our video experience so if you have any questions, put them in the comments and I will answer them! Happy Staining!

This is such a good idea, to share the steps of these things. I have a home decor and DIY blog and I cannot tell you how many times I have explained the process. This will help people understand the simple process so much more. I am the same way as you, if I can do it anyone can. I have not tried the Ombre technique before, mainly because I do not have a furniture piece that would showcase it well, but I love the look! I love that you and your husband work together so much on projects, I am the same way with my hubby. It is nice to see another DIY couple 🙂

I loved these video clips! Also, I’ve used Rustoleum and Varathane products with the same great results.

Great videos, Katie 🙂
I’ll definitely reference the staining one when I get around to working on the bookshelf in my garage… one of these days, I swear…

I LOVE that you did this. First, I love Rustoleum products. And I love that you showed the whitewashing and the distressed nightstand. Those are 2 things I want to do… thank you, thank you!!!

Right now I don’t have anything I need to distress/ombre/whitewash/poly/stain, but I am so glad this is here for when I do have those projects! Hooray! I totally doubt my abilities to do these types of things, so your encouragement and direction is much appreciated!

Maybe with all this new stain/poly information you can help me out. We are building a new dining table, and I’m worried about water rings (who wants to use a coaster all the time?). My plan is to use polyurethane and apply more coats than Joey in Chandler’s clothes, but I’ve also thought about epoxy. What do I really need to do to protect my table?

LOVE THESE!!!!

Fun and helpful- thanks!! Where did you get the drawer handle used in your distressing video? I love it!
Katie says
It’s was a clearance item in my stash. I think it is probably Home Depot 🙂

I would definitely use a Rust-Oleum polyurethane (probably either gloss or semigloss) and not their triple thick as you may experience more drips on the vertical surfaces. You can do anywhere from 6-8 coats and use 440 sandpaper in between coats for a factory like finish! Good luck!
