Sitting Room Makeover (we did it all in one day!

ROOM REVEALS

It all began with a sofa.
That’s the punch line by the way.  But let me tell ya the rest of the story.  This is a one-day makeover.  Yup.  Our first and possibly only….ever….one day makeover.  And I LOVE it.  Like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles like pizza kinda love it.  And it’s totally cowabunga.  You saw that coming didn’t ya?!
Okay….so let’s go back to the beginning.  Last time I talked about Interior Define, I shared with you how they are an amazing sofa and sectional company that customizes furniture at a great price point.  I picked out my favorite sofas and sectionals and created a curated collection (you can check out my favorites here!).  I also said that hopefully by the end of the year that our sitting room would get a full-blown makeover.  Well, I talked Jeremy into a one-day makeover and I am thrilled to share it with you today!
We talked to Interior Define about our favorite sofas and what would fit the best in our space and in the end, I couldn’t stop thinking about Lucy.  I would walk around the house saying “you got some ‘splainin to do Lucy!” and search on ebay for I love Lucy paraphernalia.  The Lucy sofa will do that to a girl.  It came in two different fabrics – the linen blend in stone (which is really like a sandy tan color) and the linear cloth in cinder (a light gray).  I loved the texture of the linen so much that I had to go for it!  I told you about the customization process with Interior Define, right?!
It’s basically a custom piece at an affordable price point.  They manage to keep the costs low (generally 30-40% less than comparable retailers) because they maintain an online presence that cuts out retail markups and they follow a made-to-order service model.  You pick the fabric, the fill, the legs, the whole shebang.  And then you should get the free fabric swatches and the product cards to make sure you know all the details.  You basically get to be the designer and then BOOM!  White glove FREE delivery service to your door.

Okay – so back to our sitting room.  The space before was really lacking any type of finishes.  We had a second hand couch in there that was really too big and didn’t fit the space with the L-shape configuration.  I had Jeremy bring the nursery rocker in there but it needs to go back into the baby room.  There were mismatched side tables and a random changing table that we never used for anything but storage.  It had some good things – the rug I love, the homemade art is still fitting….heck, even the old paint color I can live with.  But everything else?  Needs.  to.  go.

And go it did!  After we got the sofa delivered, we put it in the upstairs hall and got to work taking EVERYTHING out of the space.  A clean slate is the perfect starting point!

Then we layered in some of the ‘foundation pieces’….aka the new Lucy sofa, a couple patterned chairs and an old coffee table.

I love the arms on this thing.  They are slender and the perfect support-height for a good conversation.  Both Jeremy and I love how it looks like a big sofa without actually taking up a ton of space.  It’s got presence, ya know?

So the windows needed a little softening too.  Before they didn’t have any window treatments and the bay window was just begging to be turned into a conversation area.

We scored some small sitting chairs on clearance at Target and we both like how they compliment the sofa.  They are like the little twin brothers to the big sister Lucy 🙂

A small round table in between helps keep things light and airy and those curtains really make the windows look bigger!

I had a great time adding other accessories too.  Since we kept the artwork, there needed to be something dark on the walls to bring a little contrast and this $20 clock was a great fit.  We kept the little side table that used to be near the rocker and just switched it to this side and I think it works perfectly!

I love having a simple sofa that I can change up all the time with different throw pillows and these chairs were so boldly patterned that the sofa helps make them feel a little more grown up.  Even though the room is relatively small, I feel like we have our own private oasis in here now just by using size-appropriate pieces.

We already told the boys that this is mommy & daddy’s space….that means no kids in here!  They can invade our bed every night but our tv-watching space is OURS!

Obviously the other side of the room is not finished and hopefully we can strike that from our to-do list this year….

But I gotta admit that it’s not such a huge eye sore now that the rest of the room is ready!

    Your room makeover turned out so great! I am currently redoing my living room so your post came at a perfect time! I wanted to get new chairs, art, curtains, rug, etc. but was going to keep our couch because they are expensive and everything else is adding up. But we got it for free and it’s not too pretty to look at. The Lucy sofa would look sooo good in my living room and just take everything to the next level and complete the room.   151. I love how this turned out! The pops of blue are wonderful. It is my favorite color to add to brighten up a space. I wish my husband and I had a kid free space. We do have our bedroom, but to have a place to work and relax in. Without having to move kids toys from under the cushions and dismantle the pillow fort before I can sit on the couch would be awesome.

  473. They Grey 69′ is fantastic. I have a little house so i need little furniture. The ability to have a short arm and a longer arm is great as my house is an a-frame!

  480. In the past you’ve commented how this area is used for recovery after birth, and you’ve prepared it so you can essentially live in the area with your boys if a c-section is necessary. Why change the function now? Especially with co-sleeping? How will you prevent this area from being cluttered moving forward?   524. Okay, so of course, I want what I can’t have. I love the shape of the Lucy, and I love the light colored linen fabric, but I am a coffee spiller. I would want this couch in my living room to show off, but it would look like a brown cow print after about two days. In my perfect Angie-world, I would choose the Lucy with the cranberry fabric + a serious coat of Scotch Guard or whatever the kids are using these days.

  554. Well those are good questions. I think the answer basically comes down to our evolution as parents. My chances of a section are relatively low now that I’ve had two VBACs and it still has the function that I need for post partum nursing and relaxing (although I will definitely put a big ole blanket over the sofa to protect it). We moved the changing table in because we thought it would be helpful but now we realized we are more “bed changers”. As far as clutter goes, it might get there but hopefully once we get the shelves and built ins built, it should help. We are not the most non-cluttered people of the world but we are slowly learning what helps!

  556. I should probably say the Sloane is my favorite, since that’s my husband’s name, but I LOVE the Rose! I would probably choose either the Seashell velvet or Lagoon velvet! Beautiful! I do wish the Rose had coordinating chairs….

  617. First, I LOVE that this company is in Chicago so it is near me – woo hoo! I’d choose the Sloan and would pick the color called Cerulean Blue. This would be used in our finished basement where we really need a sofa to relax and chill on while we watch TV or while the hubby does work/pay bills in his office.

  889. Hi Katie! I am considering purchasing a sofa from Interior Define and was wondering if you could share how yours has held up for the past 10 months or so? Is the quality there? Has it held up well? Would you still recommend?

  890. It has been great! It is in an ‘adult only’ space so that probably helps but we have had a couple water spills and a spit up accident that came right up but it has cleaned up nicely. Also we got a linen version and it bounces right back to the original shape if I sit in one spot for too long.

  893. Is this the couch you are getting rid of because it is uncomfortable? Would you still recommend?

  894. I would still recommend it…it would be perfect for a sitting room and the cushions go right back to being nicely plump. Plus, I did get a little chocolate on it and I just washed the cover on that one cushion and it came out great. I know lots of people that have linen couches and they age REALLY well. I would not recommend it for a kid’s space though….or a messy-husband seating situation…because the arms are not washable. We got the firmer version cushion so if you like more cush for the tush, they have other options.
