Voting day is here people! You get to decide who is the winner (me me me!!!) and who is the first Bower build off loser (ok…there is a 50/50 chance this is also me).
What is a Bower Build Off? So glad you asked.
I have a very short video that you can watch and hear all about it. Also, be prepared for the word ‘parameter’. Click here to watch. Or if you just want to see a cute baby.
So our rules are simple this time….create something with one of these old thread spools. And it has to take only an hour. Also…I’d like to say right now before you see the projects that Jeremy cheated. Also…Jer tried to play dirty and foil my plans. Also…I started my project only to discover that my hoard of materials failed me so I technically should be disqualified. Also…Jeremy made me say that. publicly. And he cheated. More on that when we share our projects how-tos.
Speaking of projects….
without further ado…
introducing….
it’s my greatest honor to present to you….
PROJECT #1
and PROJECT #2
Now it’s up to you to tell us who had the best idea! And keep in mind that Jeremy cheated 🙂 Also I love you and we are best friends.
The Advicist says
I voted but I’m not telling! Just had to say how impressed I am with what substantial projects you came up with. I was expecting, I dunno, a ribbon organiser or something.
Katie O says
Where did you get that yellow bag from in the photo of the bench? This Katie LIKEY.
Trista says
They are both great, but…Project 2 is my favorite.
Karen J says
They are both good. I can’t decide:/
April says
Wow, those lamps look really classy!
Bethany says
Ooooh, I like them both. I wish I could give 2 votes- Project 2 definitely had the most creative use of the spools, but project 1 is the most impressive as far as being labor intensive (and more bang or your buck).
Reenie says
WOW ~ ~ both are very kewel ideas…. hard choice ~ ~ I need to think about it. 🙂
Valerie says
I saw the bench and LOVED it. And wondered how it could get better… Then I saw the lamps and was torn. They’re both great but those spools look like they were MADE to be lamps so that got my vote. The bench is awesome though.
Jacqueline R says
I absolutely love both projects! So creative! However, my vote is going with #2. I hope you post a tutorial because I NEED a pair of those.
RD says
Not fair–they’re both great!
Melissa says
The lamps get my vote!!!
liz @ btb says
Look like the lamps are a winner so far! They look expensive! I like them both 🙂
Brooke says
Oh I love them both!! They look fantastic!
Theresa W says
That was a really hard decision! Both projects rock – I totally didn’t expect either one. Congrats! Can’t wait to hear all the dirty details 🙂
julianne catlin says
Oh Man! These are both awesome projects!!
I’d be super intimidated to make something into a lamp and hope to get all the wires right… a tutorial on that one after the voting would be awesome.
I also wish I had somewhere in my house that needed a bench, because I would totally do that! Though I’d have to make due without those Awesome Spools!
Katie says
Kohls a few years ago…isn’t it cute?

katy says
Great job to the both of you! Both turned out to be awesome ideas and great execution! I agree with others that those spools were made to be lamps. But I love the bench too since I’m guessing making the bench cushion was technically part of the project too. Love that fabric. And I can only imagine the one of you making a bench cushion 😉
Allie says
DANG! I was not expecting either of these! Kudos to you both! I love the fabric on the bench (source?) and the lamps are so creative!
AlisonG says
Lamps for the win!
Maria says
Both projects are great! It was a tough choice!
Ali says
What a great idea! Maybe I need to introduce this in my house to get my hubby interested in doing projects around the house!
The bench is great and when I saw it I was like, Wow! That’s a great way to use those spools… However, when I saw the lamps I was like, OMG! I would have never thought of that… So the lamps get my vote 🙂
kristen says
you people are crazy – that bench is AMAZING!
Tiffany says
She said: Also I love you and we are best friends. hahaha funny.
Jeanna says
Oh this is so hard!! I love them both, the bench is so cute and clever! But I am really attracted to the lamps 🙂 Sorry Katie…………………….. 🙂
Kris says
Both good ideas but I like #2 better.
Gracie says
These are both awesome projects! You guys did good.
Brenda says
They both look amazing for different reasons! So in my book you both won, because I would totally use either of those pieces of decor.
Carly says
I like the lamps but I feel like that was too easy. I voted bench!
Jill says
Oh, this is fun! I can’t wait to find out who did which project. And I love the instant gratification of being able to vote and see which project is leading.
Ida says
I voted for my favorite but I really love both projects and wanted to know, will we get a tutorial on both?
erika m says
I was inclined to think the lamps were Katie and the bench Jeremy but than I wondered if the person who built the project also styled it because if that’s the case I think Katie styled the bench…hmmm..both are nice!
Nicole says
hmm..both awesome. I love the lamps though!
Lina says
I love them both, but I think the lamps look more seamless than the bench…not in execution just that the spool seems better fit for a lamp…but I would totally get a bench like that for my entryway!
Kelly says
You both win in that the lamps and bench are fantastic additions to your home! I hope you’ll love, enjoy and pass them down to your boys with the story, “Do you remember when Mommy & Daddy challenged each other to a project contest on the internet?”
Elizabeth says
#2!!!
Meredith says
Katie, I love both of these ideas! I agree with previous comments that they are really impressive for 1 hour and a bunch of spools. 🙂
I ended up picking the lamps though because I think it’s something that your readers will be able to recreate more successfully than the bench. I’m also not sure how much weight will be able to actually be supported by the spools (even if you secure them)… depending on the spools selected, you never know if they might fail under someone heavy. 😉 The lamps are really fun and demonstrate a great idea of making a lamp out of everyday things that you have around the house.
Great job guys!
Alyssa says
I love both projects!
More videos with you, Jeremy, and the kids please. You guys are adorable together! 🙂
Gretchen says
I’m in the minority, but I love that bench!
Cheryl says
I am massively impressed with both! And how did these happen in an hour each?!? I need to up my game.
Anne says
Awesome ideas! Like them both and hope the vote ends up a tie. But as I don’t have enough space for the cute bench I’m looking more forward to the tutorial on the lamp. (I bought a thread spool when you announced the Bower Build Off so I could steal your great creative ideas.)
Janelle says
Competitive much? haha 😉
Kasey R says
Both are pretty awesome and your video is freakin funny + how cute are you two and little LJ. I love the Build-Off idea!
Katie says
Yes! I plan on posting both tutorials next week!

Katie says
It’s from the discount fabric store and it didn’t have a name!

leia says
Project #2….SUPER MEGA LOVE THEM!!!!
Genevieve says
I feel torn – both projects are stunning, but the lamps looked higher end while the bench is quirkier… Is that even a word? I give sleek points to the lamps and quirky points to the bench!
SB says
My guess is lamps are Katie and bench is Jeremy. The lamp photos are way better quality and composition. The bench pic is crooked and Jeremy said he was only going to use his phone. Hmmm. Am I right? 😉 Lamps FTW.
Denise Z says
If I saw those lamps in a store, I’d BUY them!!!
Toni says
I’m so curious about how he cheated! I’m suspicious that if he’s the lamp builder then… maybe… the lamps don’t work? 😉
Carli says
K, both of these projects are awesome! And that video!?!? How did I miss that the first time around? That was the cutest! Loved this challenge. Can’t wait to see the next one 🙂
Kelsey Noble says
Definitely loved both, especially the fabric on that bench! (swoon) But since this was all about the thread spools, I thought the lamp was perfect! Would look awesome in a cabin! You should sell them! I love the Bower Build-Off challenge and hope to see more! Can’t wait for the tutorials!
LN says
Both projects are really great. Hard to choose. Congratulations to you both.
Cheri s in Iowa says
I am guessing the bench was your project. If it were Jeremy’s it would look like it could hold an elephant. Am I right?
Anna, Sydney says
LOVE this challenge! And that we don’t know who did what. Hope this will be a regular feature (quarterly?). Can’t wait to find out who did what. Both very good entries to the Build Off.
Jen says
Wow, I am diggin’ those lamps! I feel like they showcase the spools more…no offense to the bench maker, also a cool project, but the lamps win it for me 😀
Laura says
Lamps. Both projects are genius, but I’d buy those lamps!
Sarah @ Sarah's Daybook says
I love both of the projects and really can’t tell who did what! I love the bench, but those lamp shades are killing it. Good luck to you both!
Shannon says
Just one question – did anyone weight-test the bench to make sure it will hold up to 4 year old madness?!
(just kidding! kindofnotreally ;P)
This is a really fun feature!! Excited to see the results and also what the next build-off will be!
Susan says
Those spools are much bigger than I thought from the original challenge post. I honestly couldn’t imagine what you’d make out of tiny spools. Now it’s making more sense.
Nice job on both projects but I love those lamps. In fact, where can I find me some spools?
memaw0624 says
Nothing better than- somewhere to sit and change shoes, or wait for someone (coming and going). With that said I could see (me) losing a toe on the knobs bottoms of that bench (or at least a toenail lol). Those lamps are totally up my side of the street. Would take them in a minute (so if the one that loses this bet and they pouts and throw them out—Let me know, I will trash hop right over). Great job to both of you, but please for the toe’s sake ….Take off the knobs and put little felt squares on the bottom…. Great projects!!!! In the words of our Granddaughter Do It Again Pop, Do It Again!!
Gina says
Both are pretty awesome but the lamps show off the thread spools more.
Chrissy says
I’m so impressed with both of these projects. Great job!
Meg says
Love them both! I think the styling on the bench is what makes it — that said, I totally went with the lamps. 😉
Alyce says
Love that you didn’t tell us who did what!! And I want those lamps. Now.
Michelle Fitzgerald says
Lamps, hands-down! Love them. I want them. Kudos to the bench maker but the lamps are awesome.. “Everything is Awesome”..For those of you who have kids that have watched the Lego movie, you may be wanting to shoot darts at me right about now. Every time I hear the word awesome that song comes to mind and I want to shoot some darts myself.. I thought I’d spread that love around today. LOVE the lamps..
Tami G says
The lamps are incredible!!! I want some!!
Amy says
Lamps lamp lamps! And I love them so let me know when you are ready to sell them…to me! 🙂
Meggan says
You should really have a tie button, I like them both equally!
JoDi says
That bench is great, but I can’t resist a nice, rustic lamp! You both did a great job!
Ginnie says
I voted bench. I love them both, so I had to decide which I would rather have in my home. Also, how is the stability on those lamps? The narrow spool bottom and weight in the bulb and shade looks like it might topple easy.
Anne Loyd says
I love both but when I saw the lamp I was very impressed so my vote goes for the lamp!!
Liane says
I’m calling it right now that the lamps are Jeremy and the bench is Katie!! They both look lovely, but we all know about Jeremy and his obsession with things being sturdy enough, I just don’t think he would make a bench for ppl to sit on with this skinny spools! Unless they’re sturdier in person than they look in the photos… but I think it would freak him out 😉
Liz H says
I voted for the bench. I really like both, and would probably prefer the lamps in my house, but the bench looks significantly more difficult within the constraints.
Cheryl says
I am impressed with both. I chose the lamps, though; I would totally buy those! I have been looking for bedroom lamps, though, so I may be biased.
The only thing I would change about the bench to make it equally as like-able for my taste is to take off the bottom discs that sit on the floor. Other than that, beautiful job as well!!!
Jessica Holmes says
Loving the little spy on the new bed linen…where’s that from please? 🙂
Cindy says
I like both projects, but I really love those lamps! What a fun challenge – you two are just so cute together. TFS!
Jillian says
I love both, but I vote bench!
Angela says
Love them both but I love the bench more! Also… The lamps are never shown on- just sayin’… So what if they aren’t actually lamps but instead just fake hahahaha
Robin says
The lamps are so cool! You could totally sell them.
Katie says
Ikea 🙂

Anje says
A little off topic, but can you share your bedding source? I’m looking for something a) washable and b) with a forgiving stripe pattern and yours fits the bill.
Christina says
I liked both, but am really wanting the lamps for my house!
Stephanie says
Ugh I love both! I will have to say the lamps though for the win. Such a fun thing to do with each other!
Amanda says
I vote project #1, but wouldn’t say no to those lamps! #lampaddict
Abbey says
So fun! These are both awesome projects. Permission to feature a photo of the bench on our blog? (With credit and links back of course!) 🙂
Katie says
Sure!
xo – kb
Katie says
Oh heck, every single thing in our house is weight-tested 🙂

Michelle | Birds of Berwick says
Wow! I’m so impressed with the creativity of both projects! I will say, though, that my mouth sorta dropped open in awe when I got to the lamps. What a GREAT idea and they came out looking SO GOOD!
AnneMarie says
who made what?!? I want to know now. 🙂
Katie says
Sure – I plan a whole post about it soon!

Abbey says
Thanks so much Katie! (http://www.onlinefabricstore.net/blog/bower-power-bench/) Let me know if you have any fabric needs coming up 😉
