Random tidbit…I’ve been wanting a red dress for Christmas pictures. I have a red dress but it’s from my college days when I was like Mono Barbie (except minus the mono and the boobs)…and I don’t think I could squeeze my bacony bootie into it even if I dieted on nothing but ice cubes from now till Christmas. So all that to say, I wanted a red dress. Enter Goodwill. I found one. It’s my size, $5, and a little spicy red number…perfect condition. Oh and did I mention, it was J.Crew. and $5. and J.Crew. and $5! I love when that happens.
Now onto the meat of this here post – the other side of the master bedroom.
Okay – so our master bedroom started out with crazy carpeting (the wall color has been there and no, I don’t know what color it is yet!):
Right after we closed on the house, we immediately splurged on new carpeting. It changes my room instantly.
The one side of the room is set up now pretty close to what it is going to look like for a while….but the opposite corner was empty for quite some time.
Finally we hung some art (it used to live above our tv in the old house) and I put the long dresser, a goodwill chair, and a snake plant in the corner.
I really want to put a mirror in place of the chair – a big one from floor to ceiling…my mom gave us one as a thank-you-for-hosting-the-wedding gift but it’s just a matter of getting it in place.
The other side of the room is still a mess. a hot mess.
The sitting area needs help too.
Sorry about the lighting…but you can see it’s sortof just gathering odds & ends in there. Nothing exciting.
So that’s what’s going on over here…it’s what I wake up to every day…and some little tidbits on what I wanna change….normal house progress stuff. Off to edit photos!
Melissa @ A Place to Nest says
In the picture of your finished bedroom do I see some little arms or legs sticking out on one side? Wondering if you were playing “where’s Will” with us? 🙂
Amanda says
Katie! Where did you find your bedroom furniture – specifically the nightstands! I’ve been looking for some that resemble those for a while and not much luck. Dressers too. Thanks! XOXO
Madison@TheSeidlerFamily says
Love how big the room is – and how there are such defined spaces. Our master has a sitting area as well, but it is soooo a work in progress, and not even remotely close to looking like this! Unfortunately, the rest of the house, and the bambino get the most attention and finances right now! I can’t wait to see what you do, though, with the space!
Best,
Madison
Ashley Ez says
It’s crazy how much the wall color changed with your new carpet. Can’t wait to see what you do in here!
Emily says
I can’t wait to see the holiday pics and that spicy red dress sounds perfect. I cannot believe how much changing the carpet changed the wall color, I completely forgot those pictures from when you replaced the carpet.
Robin @ Our Semi Organic Life says
Wow that sitting room is awesome! What are you plans for it? I would not know what to do with such a master suite!
Diane says
Oh Katie…that sitting room is BEGGING for a sofa named Karl. Or since that name is taken Karla 😉
Colleen says
Seriously, your dream house is my dream house! Sooo jealous even if you have toothpaste walls and some crazy things Napoleon did! (also kinda enjoy the toothpaste walls).
Moni says
Wow, that old blue carpet was lame.. the new shade makes such a huge difference! Its like its a different house. 🙂 On a side note, the sitting room space is awesome.. I vote for “dressing room” mirrors and a runway. I mean, who wouldn’t want a fireplace in their dressing room??
Melissa Evans says
your house is SO dreamy…..I luv it! it’s coming along and I’m loving it more and more!!! and YAY!!!…to the red dress. Jcrew and $5….unheard of…..I love deals like that!! major happy dance, when jcrew and $5 come together!!
Brittany says
I’ve been loving your blog and your style! I have to ask, where did you find the dresser and nightstands? I’m looking for something just like that, but I’m on a budget :-/
Leila says
Hi Kate, can you post a picture of the fireplace + tv ? I kinda like what you did in there but I cant really see it well. Thank you
Tabitha@aintlifesweet says
I know how you feel about your room – it’s a never ending process for sure. We’ve been in our new house for 2.5 months and there’s still so much to do. We also bought a foreclosure and got so much more bang for our buck! I’m so scared to hang things in fear of wanting everything switched around later. So we’re hardly decorated at all. One yardsale, goodwill trip at a time I suppose!!!
Love your room, it’s amazing! {{swoon}}
Marlayna says
You are hilarious. Bacon bootie? 🙂 I’m going to have to use that one!
So, I’ve read enough of your posts to know you’re a rockstar at finding treasures at Goodwill so I’m probably able to answer my own question but: the dresser in the corner, where is it from?
……..ok, hmm, rethinking my own assumption as I notice that the end tables are the same styling…probably not Goodwill. Still wondering though! 🙂
PS. Where did you get your sticks? Me wants to make a pretty & rustic star for Xmas just like yours. Thanks again!
Kathryn says
I love how the room is shaping up. And the wall color is so beautiful..especially with the new carpet in there. Everything is looking beautiful and I love the direction you are taking each room. I admire what you do because it is real, and you keep it real. Thanks for being you. 🙂 I love your blog 🙂
Kirsty says
I can tell this room (suite?? It’s huge!) will look amazing when you’re finished with it Katie! I can’t wait to see it all done up but in the meantime we’ll all wait patiently! 🙂
I love the carpet you chose, I don’t mind the wall colour either actually…
Hilary says
Whoa–the sitting area is a whole room! That’s awesome. …And let’s see your little red dress! 🙂
Regan R @ RenovatingRothenbergers says
That sitting room is huge! And is that a fireplace I see? Your house rocks my socks. . . seriously, my toes are fahreezing right now!
Meagan Snow says
I had no idea there was a little sitting room off to the side of your bedroom. Wow this house just is so big…I can see why you call it the “dream house” haha.
Jenn W-M says
It’s coming together. I have to say though you have inspired me to get things on the wall and quit leaning things everywhere. Your bedroom is looking good! Even with the new carpet, the walls don’t look so bad.
I had to laugh at ‘The snake plant’ my mom always called it a ‘mother in law’s tongue’
Caitlin @ Hardly Housewives says
I can’t believe you have a seating area in your bedroom…SO beautiful. And SO fancy!
Katie says
So fancy. Right now it has an elliptical machine in it 🙂

Katie says
Yup it does have one of those fireplace inserts…of course, it also has this weird tile…so I want to redo that one day 🙂

Ashley @ Lewis in Love says
Ahh I drool. I just made my husband look at your bedroom for further reason why we should move from Long Island. 🙂 Such a gorgeous home!!!!!
Katie says
They are the Canopy line at Walmart 🙂

Katie says
Eventually we want to make it a plush sitting area that has room for a chaise 🙂 But that is far off right now!

Katie says
It’s from Walmart – it’s the Canopy line 🙂

My eyes instantly popped out of my head at $5 and j.crew in one sentence! Please show us a pic, please!
PS I love the corner with the chair and dresser. I know bedroom chairs just collect clothes, but it looks homey, but I’m sure it’ll be even better when replaced by that humungo mirror.
Megan says
First, I’m totally jealous of your bedroom sitting room. Second, you should post a pic of the dress. Third, unrelated to this post, I’m also jealous of your long hair!
Katie @ explanationrequired says
I love how everything is coming together. It looks like such a relaxing space!
We’re shoppping for carpet right and I really like the texture of yours. Do you have a closeup of it, or can you describe what it looks like up close?
Katie says
Hi Katie,
There is a closeup shot in the post when I talked about the installation! Just punch Martha Stewart carpet into the search box and it will show all 🙂

The Canopy furniture looks beautiful. What do you think about the quality? Is it comparable to the solidly built secondhand furniture you’ve bought, or is it more like Ikea quality? (not knocking Ikea, I have tons of it — just curious)
Katie says
It’s definitely better than Ikea…but it was difficult to get the pieces in one piece. For example, one nightstand came in a box with a damaged door. So we returned it and got another shipped. That one also was damaged. Third time was a charm but that process was unfortunately the norm for the furniture. Once we had all the pieces and got it put together…it has been amazing. But the process wasn’t fun.

beautiful! also i cant wait for you to post about your sisters wedding!
jennifer says
LOVE this bedroom, it’s dreamy, finished or not…looking good!!
Tiffany @MomNom says
That sitting area would be an EXCELLENT workout area…with weights, yoga mats, treadmill, etc. You would be ROCKING that red dress from college in NO TIME. Plus? You have that TV to watch as you workout every morning, making the time FLY BY.
Just my two cents.
nicole says
go you, i look so pale when i wear red. except for my cheeks. i pretty much look like one of those china dolls. from china. where the color just isn’t quite right.
we will be requiring photographic proof of this dress come christmastime 🙂
ps – i created a thanksgiving printable bunting and posted it on my blog (how crafty of me). my husband is almost convinced i’m turning into a housewife. almost.
Sarah says
You seriously live in one of the most gorgeous houses I’ve ever seen. It has so much character and potential. I love watching this place evolve. Random tidbit: I am a goodwill addict thanks to your inspiring blog.
Colleen C. says
Dang Katie I knew your house was big but I didn’t realize it was this big…you have a sitting room off the side of your bedroom that’s amazing!…I think your sitting room + master bedroom is the size of my apartment, seriously!…Can’t wait to see what you come up with for this space, knowing you its going to be fabulous!
Kylie says
I LOVE the fact that your bedroom has that separate sitting room. So fancy! 😉 That “before” carpet made me LOL. What exactly were the previous owners going for? Haha.
You have done an awesome, though!
Melissa @ A Place to Nest says
Those crazy Will’s…. I have a Will too born in April as well. Mine will be 4 in 2012… but they sure are characters 🙂
Katie says
your whole comment I was thinking – ooh china dolls look sooo pretty! heehee 🙂

Gabbi says
obvi, your house rocks.
but can we see this dress?!?!?! $5 for j. crew!!!! i’m beyond jealous.
Jamie says
Katie, nice job! I love that little sitting room, although I can’t imagine you hanging out in those formal chairs and watching some TV. A small sectional in there would just be perfect for snuggling your little monkey.
Katie says
Yeah…can you imagine us sitting in those trying to relax? Not happening. I have never sat in one of those 🙂
xo – kb
Gracie says
You have a fireplace in your bedroom?!? That is awesome!
Heather says
Katie, did you guys build your bed? Cause that looks a lot like mine and my hubby built that from Ana’s site. Love the bed!
Meredith says
I’m not sure if you have a smart phone but, if you do, there’s an app with both Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore where you can take a picture of anything and the app will color match it to one of their paints. Perhaps that would work for the wall color in your room?
Carrie says
I’d make that sitting room my yoga studio- what a cool space.
Katie says
We did! And we love it! And we love Ana 🙂

Katie says
hmmmm….vaee interrrrestin.

Sam @ The Junk House says
I need a dress for a wedding this weekend, so I’m going to hit up the thrift stores after work today. Send your $5 J. Crew vibes my way please! Anyway, the carpet was definitely an instant change for the better. I can’t wait to see what you do with the sitting area!
Melissa @ A Place to Nest says
We just re-did our bedroom with canopy furniture for the dressers and endtables. Honestly- sooo happy we did. Great quality. My friends came over and thought we went to Pottery Barn for a new set. Surprise! Of course we did spurlge on a west elm bed- but hey- it was a gift to each other for our anniversary 🙂 I highly recommend Canopy. Only issue- It weighs a TON!
Katie says
You are right about that Melissa – it does weigh a ton! And I completely agree – it definitely looks way more expensive than Walmart 🙂
