Hold on to your panties people, here comes a whirlwind bathroom makeover.
Part one here is about a swift little changeroonie that just had to take place. You may remember this bathroom because it made you vomit. Don’t be ashamed. Pink walls with bright blue ragged texture can make anyone sick. Next time just have someone hold your hair back before reading Bower Power 🙂
I needed that extra kick in the hiney to get moving in here…hence the inspirational wall art (yup the framed stickers)…
The other side of the room is just as weirdly odd. Still ragged walls (I believe the ragged-walls-house-count is up to four rooms with this same effect) but we also have green accent tile in the shower, gold fixtures and chipping wood trim paint.
Oh yeah…see that trimwork with the splintering paint job…it’s right there next to the moldy tile…
Here’s a closer look (remember have a friend hold back the hair and rub the back after each heave)…
Okay – so for four nights I had to put Will down for bed and then I would run in here to work on this little minor detail till the energy drained from my fingertips and I had to get back to my piled up blogwork…can you guys guess what it was? Here’s a clue…
If you guessed painted the trim….DING DING DING! You are a winner! One hundred points for you!
I had to sand down all the trim work and the doors and then prime and paint them all. And let me tell you, it took about four coats…NOT FUN. Apparently the old trim color (which is the same throughout the entire house and I hate it) is not cream or off white – it’s tan. TAN! AS IN THE COLOR I SLIGHTLY TURN AFTER HOURS OF BAKING IN THE SUN. Yes, typing that makes me feel like I need anger management classes. My name is Katie and I have tan trim.
Thankfully it came out looking alright though.
Of course, we are going broke faster than MC Hammer with so many renovations – so I gave myself a budget of $50 to make this bathroom over. Not so much money when you think about the cost of one gallon of paint being over half that. So I searched the workroom for all leftovers. I ended up with the paint bucket of the color of trim from the old house (you know, the house that had WHITE TRIM). It’s just the basic Pastel Base white paint (no tint added) in semi-gloss.
And because I know you probably forgot what a difference it really was, here’s the before and after:
I feel like it looks way cleaner even though I haven’t actually cleaned anything yet. Cleaner, right?!
Of course that budget doesn’t allow me to do much of anything with the gold shower fixtures….so they will have to stay for now…
But the light? I saw an Ikea light that would be PERFECT for in here…and plus, the decended boob light needs a new home…and a new coat of ORB what with all those rust spots.
You may be wondering…why am I switching up this bathroom when there is more pressing matters that pertain to my baby sis’s upcoming nuptials?
Well…we are having 9 people stay with us for the wedding (Pastor Dad, Nurse Vicki, Nornie, Cole Baby, Clara, Legs, Gorilla, Bubba, and Hottie Tim)…and all the kids need a bathroom. That’s 11 people showering on wedding day if you count Jer & I. So I begrudgingly decided that getting this one decent for cheap would be a huge asset in the short & long run.
Next chore is painting. I whipped out the shower curtain fabric (it’s a $5 multicolor striped twin sized flat sheet from Walmart) and visited the workroom to see what paints I could score for free for the walls.
Of course, they are all old – nothing new means no more money spent!
I’ll confess…I already made the decision and the bathroom is painted. I love it 🙂 You’ll have to wait till part three to see it though…
And here’s the budget breakdown so far:
- Shower curtain – $5
- Pastel White Semi Gloss Paint for trim – $0 (already owned)
- Sticker Art & frame – $0 (already owned)
- Brushes, sandpaper, tools – $0 (already owned)
TOTAL $5
Anyone think they know what color I chose? Anybody else deal with TAN trim? Anyone have decended boobs? No? Just me then…
Stay tuned for later – I am whirlwinding this makeover…too much to share, too little time….
Kristen @ Popcorn on the Stove says
Do people paint trim tan now? I’ve only ever painted it white (yeah, I am totally predictable) so this is news to me. Anyway, I have a feeling you chose either the Oops Old Paint or Will’s Old Bedroom Paint. Can’t wait to see it finished! I love surprises!
Brooke @ Life on a Gravel Road says
I think you chose the green paint. I love it with the curtain. As far as the tan trim…. nope. But, I have to deal with wood trim! UGH!! My husband thinks it’s a carnal sin to paint wood. So far though, I’ve convinced him to let me paint the office and pantry trim white. White trim is slowly taking over our house without him realizing it…. hahaha (evil genius laugh).
Tracy says
It looks so much better already! Tan trim = gross. Tell your house to stop with the fake bake already. I think you chose the oops paint or your old bedroom paint. I really can’t decide which of those I like better. That’s pretty cool that you were able to coordinate all of that together, pretty much all of those paint colors look like they were made for that shower curtain. Did you buy the sheet before you knew what colors you had left over?
Tracy says
Oh one more thing…would it be possible to ORB the shower fixture? Or would all that moisture be a problem?
Sarah says
I’m gonna go with Will’s old bedroom paint. And the white trim looks WAY better! Nice job! Why on earth would anyone paint trim TAN? Grody.
Amanda M. says
I love how the green tile looks in the last picture! Looks really odd in the top photos, not even looking like glass tiles.
My guess is Wills old room!
Melissa @ Mitchell House says
I bet you picked the green OOPs. Looks bangin’ with the ‘shower curtain’. 🙂
Melanie says
Goodness, the white trim makes a huge difference (especially when you look at the side-by-side before and after). Hurray for super cheap room makeovers!
Kristen says
The white trim makes a HUGE difference! What on earth would make someone paint trim tan!? That’s insane in the membrane! I can’t decide what paint color I think you picked for the walls but I’m excited to find out!
mribaro says
Oh, please say it’s the Oops Old Paint, pretty pleeeease…?
Suzanne says
Anyone have decended boobs? YES, well getting there… I think you picked “our old bedroom” paint! Am I right?! The white trim looks FAB. Who paints trim tan? I don’t get it… I’d love to see what the family looked like who lived there before you.
Abby! says
I want to guess “our old bedroom” paint too. Second place would be Will’s old bedroom. I can’t wait!
Caroline says
Well shave your head & call you Mrs. Clean….I love the changes already!!! Our ENTIRE HOUSE had tan trim when we moved in. Who the heck picks that?!?!? Painting it was a real bear, but it looks 10,000 times better once it’s done. Too bad we didn’t do a 4 coat job, so we still need to do some touch ups in places. Oh well….live & learn….or just read BP before you make any changes to your home.
I’m honestly not sure which paint you picked, but I love all 3 – how lucky to have such fab leftovers!
Cait @ Hernando House says
Loving this so far! Can’t wait to see what color paint you’re going with!
nicole says
we’re in the process of redoing our house and the previous owners painted all the trim this icky yellowish ivory color. it haunts me. it’s all i can do to not paint all the trim in the house.
well, i am. slowly but surely. but we’re using three coats to cover it and my arms just don’t have the strength for all that. one room at a time.
jane says
who knew you were on to something with your sticker art? check out this stickered wallpaper: http://bit.ly/nDDzqd
Bree says
We bought a house 5 years ago and it had ugly tan trim with a PEACH tone to them. BLECH. It was a renovated 100 year old home so the whole house had this trim including the doors. I spent an entire month after work into the night painting over that ugly tan trim. I still have nightmares. Then I had to paint the walls because they left the walls a dull builder white. I painted them tan, but it was a much much prettier tan with subtle green tones.
I also have the sagging boobs issue. 🙁 Nursing 2 babies hasn’t been kind to them.
Meg says
My name is Meg, and I have tan trim.
I was planning to get to it in the next couple weeks, because it fills me with shame. But what’s this about sanding? And 4 coats? NOOOOOOOOOO
Deep breaths, I can deal with the 4 coats. But do I really have to sand?
KBB says
I think you choose the old bedroom paint, it’s the only one that goes with everything.
Katie says
I guess the ” oops” paint!
JennyB says
I’m guessing you used your old bedroom color. The color looks between blue and green, making the glass tiles go blue/greenish. Pretty! We too, have beige and tan trim. UGGH!! PLUS, I painted the trim in the hallway with latex only to discover after a few days, that it was painted in oil-based paint..oil based TAN paint! So now, I have to take off the trim paint, prime it all and paint it again. Meanwhile, the latex is peeling off the trim and I’m totally depressed. I also have many boob lights. Oh well–I still love my 50s rancher that hasn’t been updated since the 80s. We’ll get there eventually.
Stacey says
I would guess Will’s old bedroom paint!
Veronika says
I think you chose Will’s old bedroom color cuz your sentimental like that! Nah? we’ll see we’ll see!
Kimberly says
Hi Katie! Of course you know more about this than me…but could you paint the bath fixtures with the ORB paint? I know very litte about spray paint, but that would sure be an inexpensive fix. Your light fixture that you did looked great. I am thinking of repainting our outdoor fixtures that have been faded by the sun with the ORB. Isn’t it amazing what painting the trim can do for a room? When our trim in our house was painted, the painters used some kind of oil based paint that actually began to have a yellow tint after some time. The house is only four years old, and we have started repainting the trim—aggravating!!!! I love seeing your updates on the house.
John@OurHomefromScratch says
Will’s old bedroom is my vote!
Em says
Looking great…just spray paint those gold shower fixtures with ORB too! Works like a charm…I add a clear coat when it’s a faucet or fixture so that it won’t chip and haven’t had any problems.
Molly says
Katie,
I dove into your blog this weekend. I’d seen it linked many times from YHL, but popped over with the Pinterest challenge and read the “back issues” this weekend. Totally enjoy your sense of humor and and your projects. Oh…and that cute kiddo. I’m also massively in love with your red dining chairs. And I can see that lots of people tell you you look like the pretty, unskankified Britney Spears, so I won’t mention that. (Although in some photos the resemblance is quite amazing.)
As for your bathroom. Hooray for white trim! And I’m betting you picked the green Ooops! paint.
I used some Oops! paint for a project myself this weekend:
http://thenestinggame.com/2011/09/12/maybe-im-a-glazed/
I’m also in Atlanta. Yay for Georgia. Keep up the good work.
julianna says
Wow, you have been so busy it makes me tired just reading about it! (plus a little ashamed of my own laziness…)
I’m glad you shared a closeup of that wall color. I hadn’t realized the blue was over a pink base. What kind of weird drugs were they high on when they chose that paint treatment??? I mean, sponge-painted blue walls are out of style, but endurable. But blue sponge-painted over pink? No wonder you avoided that room for so long!
Can’t wait to see the final reveal!
Amber says
I have that same horrible tan trim in my house! Someone painted over it at some point with white, but didn’t sand first, so now it’s flaking and peeling everywhere.
allison says
KB- I feel your pain! My husband and I got married last year, and when I moved into his house, I was annoyed that it was all painted “White”… or so I thought, until I broke out an actual white, and realized it was tan. Sigh. The walls, Doors, Baseboards, and EVERYTHING else was tan. I have spent the last year painting every single surface in the house. We bought a paint sprayer to paint the exterior earlier this summer, and I talked my husband into also painting the doors white. I never thought I would say it, but white is a beautiful thing! Good luck painting!!!
Courtney says
The trim looks a million times better now! Such an update.
I’d guess that you pick the green paint. The walls in there are already blue (blue & pink granted) and you don’t like that so green it is!!
Amanda says
Ugh, I don’t understand why anyone paints their trim weird colors! I’m a renter and got approval from the owner to paint my room from a hideous salmon color to soft grey, and while the grey looks great and the room is SO much lighter, it exposes the icknast tan trim! The trim looked slightly off-white with the salmon, but it looks straight brown next to my grey. And it turns out they painted the actual electrical sockets (not just the faceplates) salmon too, so I have no idea how I’m going to fix those.
Candace Frunzi says
The white trim looks so good! And I think you chose your old bedroom color 🙂
Melissa@ AlmostFitChick says
Love the idea of turning a sheet into a shower curtain! What a great $$$ saving trick. I’m going to guess you painted the color your old bedroom color. The suspense is killing me! I hope you tell us soon… And tan trim is a nightmare. Thankfully I had my hubby to hold my hair back! (Just kidding!) The room looks so much better with just the white trim, can’t wait to see the rest!
Rachel says
I’m pretty confident on the old bedroom paint… we will see!
Rachel says
YOUR Old bedroom paint that is… not Will’s : )
Janelle says
My boyfriend is the SAME way about painting wood. I am all about the clean look of white… I may have to try your trick of compromise. haha.
Katie says
Sanding for me was absolutely necessary…because we had massive chipping and splintering. Maybe yours will just require a wipe down with deglosser?
xo – kb
Katie says
Yup – that is the inspiration for me! Jenny of Little Green Notebook blogged about it and I jumped in!
xo – kb
Mandi says
Oh. My. Gosh! I thought we were the only ones! We have builder beige trim to match our builder beige walls- blah! (Which makes it uber hard to choose any paint colors since we don’t want to repaint the trim…) And to top it off, we have descended boob lights in every.single.room.in.our.house! That’s a whopping total of 5 descended boob lights! Way too many if you ask me…
brianne @ the ravenna girls says
I think the green! It really brings out the lively in the shower curtain 🙂
Wendy says
Hmmm… hard to tell, but it looks like your old bedroom paint matches the little square tiles best, but….. the Oops paint matches the curtain best and would be dramatic. Either one would be great!
Jess @ Little House. Big Heart. says
Why would anyone in their right mind paint their trim tan? It makes it look dirty before it even gets there. Stuff at the Little House doesn’t need a head start at looking dingy, and considering you a.) have a much bigger house (hence Little House) and b.) Will to take care of, I would say yours doesn’t either.
I went with the green (or I would, were it my bathroom… which is, in fact, green). It is a little dark for a bathroom (which usually don’t have much natural light), so you might have gone with one of the lighter colors. Hmm…
Nina says
what kind of deglosser and brush did you use to paint the trim. i need to repaint all the trim and baseboards in my house and am just trying to research and plan the best way to attack such a massive undertaking.
Mamatini says
Ok, I don’t comment often (okay, maybe almost never!) but I had to when I eeee’d at your shower curtain. I did the same thing! Took that fun colorful sheet from Walmart and sewed it into a shower curtain for my daughters’ bathroom. In fact, when I saw the fabric in your picture, my first thought was, “Hey, I didn’t know it came in a shower curtain!”
As for color choices, originally, I thought that you’d go with the middle blue; it really brings out the blue tones in the green tile. But the other two go so well with the colors in the shower curtain. So, I guess what I’m saying is, I have no idea what you’ll pick. Can’t wait to see!
My Boys' Teacher says
Well…my sister’s house has tan trim. She’s not thrilled either.
My house had a room with GREY trim. Dead armadillo grey trim. Here’s a link to the “before” (haven’t posted the “after” yet). If you scroll down you get a close up of the crown molding and an armadillo.
t.d. says
I love the mini-makeover even if this is just part 1, cuz I’m greedy duh (haha just kidding).
My vote: the green shade.
Love that you used a Wal-Mart flat sheet, and you are keeping this bathroom on a strict budget.
I was wondering though, you mentioned the gold faucets aren’t in the budget this round– what about ORB’ing them as you seem you may do with the light fixture? Then again, I am no pro, and wouldn’t know how durable the paint would be on water fixtures.
My Boys' Teacher says

Oops, forgot the link…
Sarah @ Redhead in Ruffled Flats says
Ugh! How ugly that tan was! It looks a million times better now! So, if that is the color of all the trim in your house, do you think you will paint in every room? I shudder to think about that since your home is so large, but it would be so worth it in the end!
I think you picked the color of your old bedroom! It looks nice next to the tile.
julianna says
Do you have any Tuesday Morning stores near you? They often carry Delta and Moen faucets and fixtures at a cheap price. You can never predict what they’ll have any given day, but it’s all new, no irregulars or anything, just overstocks and discontinued items. We recently got two matching bathroom faucets very cheaply there.
Katie says
I didn’t use a deglosser – because I sanded. And the brush I used was just my normal 2inch slanted Purdy brand 🙂
xo – kb
Becca says
Katie, I’m totally not a pro, but it looks like you have a ventilation issue. The mold/splintering/rust on your fixture and air vent all point to excess moisture in your bathroom. I’m not sure what the fix is because I’m sure you don’t want all of those people showering with the door open ; ) Maybe a new fan? (I really hate to blow your budget. You’re on a roll!)
Anywho, the bathroom looks better already! Kudos to you for putting in so much house update work for your sis! I really like the Oops paint! Good luck!
Becca
Jac says
Yup, our beautiful 1927 colonial has tan trim…but only in some rooms! Ugh. The damage was left from the previous owners. We are finishing a kitchen facelift so I am up to my elbows in painting tan trim white and my husband is up to his elbows changing out all of the kitchen plus because they are bisque colored (eeeewwwwwwwwww!)
Jac says
*Previous post: plus=plugs 🙂
Cheryl says
The white trim almost makes the room bearable (ok, not really, but it’s 100 times better)! 100 points to you! I hope you picked Will’s old bedroom color…I miss it.
Hilary says
Ugh…I have cream trim all over the house. We just put up new molding and I needed it to match the existing so we are in the process of repainting it all [plus doors, etc]. BLAH!!!
Kelli@becomingkelli says
Yep, our house had tan trim throughout when we moved in. It went really nicely with the dark wood paneling and tar stained ceilings *she says sarcastically*.
Alyssa says
Wills old bedroom paint is my guess! Hope I’m right so I can win one million bonus points and a free lb of bacon!!
Melanie says
It tickles me endlessly that they actually ragged that little strip between the shower surround and molding (though I suspect it was before that particular shower surround went up). Just gives me the giggles for no good reason!
I’m anti-blue for this room because it reminds me too much of the ragged horror and because the greens would help that green tile strip make more sense in the room as a whole. I think the “our old bedroom” paint looks best with the green tile but am not sure it’s the best compliment to the tone of the shower tile. Hmm… It will be fun to see the final product. 🙂
Erika says
Man, all that rag-rolling would make me crazy too. At least it’s not wallpaper that was hung directly onto sheetrock! Yep, that’s what the lovely previous owners left us with. Ah, good times.
I love seeing someone else struggle with realistic budget constraints. Not that I want anyone else to have to struggle that way, but it’s hard to read about all these great renos that people say was all DIY, but they really spent a fortune. Like you, I’m borrowing from Peter to pay Paul, so that we can get this house out of the 90’s. The way I see it is that hopefully everything will end up meshing well if I’m having to reuse colors throughout this place. Right, anyone with me? please….I don’t want to sound all crazy…
PS-Never had good boobs, and hoped they would descend after nursing for a year. I figured that way I might have something to fill up the ol’ brassiere. no luck.
Demi says
I agree with Kimberly, why don’t you ORB the shower fixtures?
Jordan G @ The Happy Homebodies says
We definitely have tan trim throughout out entire house. Tan trim that matches the tan doors and tan windowsills and tan light switches. We painted the kitchen white and you can only guess how that lovely tan trim looks against nice white paint… ew. I have grand ambitions of painting all the trim white, but it’s so overwhelming that we have only done it in the tiny guest bath. I feel your pain!
Amber says
Wow, I agree the white trim made it look so much more welcoming. And yes, you should feel welcomed to use the restroom haha. I think you chose the green paint, but they all would be an improvement.
Jess says
Oh tan trim…the bane of my home ownership. EVERY SINGLE piece of trim in my house was either tan or just the pine wood with poly on top. TERRIBLE. Tan trim w/ arm green, Tan trim w/ red, tan trim w/ butter yellow, tan trim w/ mustard, wood trim w/ TAN WALLS, tan trim w/ peach…..
I feel your pain. Happily, all has been turned bright white or off white, except the dining room – I was too lazy so I painted the walls cream and left the tan trim.
Erin @ One Project at a Time says
I’m guessing you went with Will’s old color. I feel your pain on the gross bathrooms left behind in a foreclosure. Ours didn’t have the tan trim paint, but it did come with these disgusting textured, pink/violet colored walls that resemble toothpaste smeared all over the walls. http://oneprojectatatime.blogspot.com/2011/03/nature-calls.html Unfortunately a bucket of paint won’t do the trick for us, we’re going to have to tear down those walls and start from scratch! Can’t wait to hear about your other bathroom remodel too! (Can you tell I need inspiration?)
Katie says
The vent and light are rusty but our home inspector said that it was probably because the kids that lived here before didn’t use the fan each time they showered with the doors closed. There actually is a really good fan in there already so I am hoping that we can train Will to be a little more diligent 🙂
xo – kb
julianna says
No training necessary — just rewire so that the fan automatically comes on when the light turns on — no one will be showering in the dark, therefore no one will shower without the fan. (I mean rewire in the distant future, long after all the wedding madness is behind you!)
Angela says
Hi Katie! Not a new reader but a new commenter. And fellow Georgian. 🙂
I bought a forclosure last year. While I was blessed to find one that was structurally in good shape and very little damage, I wasn’t so lucky in the cleanliness department. These people were DIRTY! Dont even get me started on the state of every light switch plate in the house.
Scrubbing baseboards is not fun. Especially when they don’t really come clean, they are just a little less dirty. I gave up. Then earlier this year I painted the downstairs bathroom and thought “Maybe I could just repaint the trim…” and went with it. The difference it made was amazing and now I’m on a mission to repaint all the trim in my house.
Angela says
OH! And I guess Will’s old room.
Carrie says
we had beige and gray trim upstairs. In our downstairs, its’ all semi-damaged wood trim that I’m probably painting soon. yeah, it takes about 4 layers of paint to cover! UGH! I feel your pain 🙂
Not to mention all the wallpaper peeling. Oh boy.
Becca says
I totally wondered why your inspector didn’t say something about this! Glad to know you’re in the clear!
Lindsay @ Lindsay's List says
Will’s old bedroom color???
Kim B says
Love the changes so far, looking forward to seeing the paint. You mentioned you hate the gold fixtures, you can totally paint them. We had similar ones in our master and were trying to get by, (until we could do a major overhaul) so my hubby took them off, roughed them up with sand paper and sprayed them with a hammered satin nickel paint. They are not perfect, but we know we will replace them down the road, but for now they look WAY better than they did.
Suesan says
Why don’t you spray paint the shower fixtures with some ORB? If you use some steel wool to sand the fixtures, tape off the wall and shower areas and spray paint it, I bet it’d look great. It’s not a long term fix, but as long as you give it plenty of drying time before using the water, I bet it’d hold up for awhile. Couldn’t hurt and you might be happily surprised.
Holly says
LOVE the changes the white trim makes – amazing! And my vote is for the green oops paint – love it for a kid’s bathroom!! Can’t wait to see what you picked …..
Cordia says
Did you use an electric sander do it by hand? And what grit? Also what kind of primer did you use? I think we are going to paint all the natural (and varnished) wood trim in our house white. It will be a big job as I will degloss, sand, prime and paint. Still trying to decide what products/brands to use. Really want to go low/no VOC if possible, but want it to hold up as well.
Erin says
The old oops paint!
Natalie says
ahh boob lights are my favorite thing to hate. It brings new meaning to the word when Home Depot displays them on a vertical wall with two right next to each other. Picture two 3o year old adults, or preteens whatever, giggling and pointing.
Katie says
Just by hand and I used a medium grit followed by fine grit. I used Zinnser’s oil based primer and then the regular old trim paint color over that.
xo – kb
Katie says
Oooh good idea! I’ll have to ask Jer about it!
xo – kb
Erin says
I’m hoping that you chose the green oops paint! It would look fabulous with the curtain and the small pops of red!
Kristen says
My house was built in 1992 and has tan trim – I’m guessing it’s an old trend, definitely not a new one. Can’t stand it, but I know as soon as I start painting some of it I have to keep going! Not quite up for that yet.
