Weird and unusual are two words that probably describe me well.
And encouraging and kind describe you all. Ok ok…and a little ‘unique’ too.
Seriously though, I can’t thank you enough for making me feel, well, not so weird about my first home sentiments. And thanks for your encouragement to forge ahead with the new house. So in the most awkward way possible…I love you. And you can imagine me batting my eyelashes as I say that.
Moving right along…I need to hang pictures on the walls. It’s been six months and the only thing on the walls is in the first floor bathroom. So one of my Mission Home Making assignments is to hang stuff. Enter Kid’s Bathroom…
Nope, never have cleaned this bad boy. Don’t judge me…it’s not nice. I will get to it. It’s just that I need to scrape the peeling paint on the molding and I don’t want to clean the floor twice. That would be overkill.
So I decided as a little incentive to get-er-done, I would hang some art. Somehow art inspires me to tackle rooms…it gives me direction. So I did.
Isn’t it cute? I know – it’s quirky and fun and colorful…but this is a kid’s bathroom afterall. And the best part? It was free. I made it. But what is so special about it? I’ll give you zero guesses and just tell you…
It’s sticker art! Who knew stickers could be so fun!? Okay granted it’s not the most high-class thing in the world but it’s definitely kid friendly.
Jenny at Little Green Notebook blogged about this treatment on walls. I couldn’t help myself…I gave it a whirl. God bless blogging and the inspiration it provides, can I get an amen?!
For those of you wondering, yes I have a box full of stickers and tatoos. Doesn’t everyone?
And no, I’m not gonna explain how to do this…because it would sound like this – peel sticker, stick sticker, repeat. I will say this…it helps to have little stickers…my collection apparently is of the bigger-is-better mindset so it was a challenge.
In the end, I still like it. It’s like me…a little weird and colorful…but from far away it doesn’t look so bad. That’s how I snagged Jeremy by the way 🙂
And all the different colors inspire me to make this bathroom really fun and kid friendly while being creative and using what we have on hand.
So anyone else up for sticker art? I betcha this is would be even more amazing if a kid actually did it for their own room!
p.s. don’t be hating on my blue rag rolled bathroom walls…I swear they are coming back in.
p.p.s. don’t believe anything I say. and at least they aren’t pink 🙂

That is actually pretty clever!

I struggled with my house feeling like home and putting art on the walls was the best thing for helping me get over the “I’m living in someone else’s house” feeling. I guess I needed stuff around me that I recognized.

Somehow your sticker art is really cute! I don’t know how you do it KB!
Stephanie says
Holy Cannoli! that looks like a lot of patience and time. It looks awesome and fun. Did you come up with the “pattern” yourself or did it just evolve.
Good work!!
Hilary says
That’s pretty great! Can’t believe those are stickers.
Katie says
I kinda had an idea in my head of what I wanted – something in the middle with lots of arms and then something surrounding it…but it evolved as I got to sticking.

I saw that post and another I believe that was on Elle Decor. Really cool that it inspired you to make your own.
Adri says
That art actually looks really awesome & fun!
And this is totally the English nerd coming out in me, but I just have say that I am SO glad you wrote “p.p.s.” instead of “p.s.s.” like so many people do. I mean, really, what kind of sense does “post script script” make? None. That’s what kind 🙂

Hey that’s cool! I saw it on LGNB too but sort of scanned over it quickly. I like the close ups, so cool to see the detail. Great idea for a kids area.

You’re house will feel so nice once the walls are painted better colors. I know rag painting was popular for awhile but wow, why? lol! Love the idea of sticker art for a kids bathroom! And soon you can get Will to make his own art! I gave my 2 year old daughter a canvas and a few color coordinating paints and let her have at it! Now that she made a small one and it’s adorable, I bought a 12 by 36″ canvas for her to go crazy on! 🙂

the paint job of the previous owners never ceases to amaze with its grossness!

It’s posts like this that make me love your blog so much. It totally makes me feel right at home, because I too have a bathroom that never gets cleaned. The sad thing is, that guests are drawn to it likes moths to the flame. Even with it baby gated, baby bathtub on the floor, a bicycle blocking the middle (don’t ask), and things piled on the toilet, someone managed to still use this bathroom. There is another bathroom (that I actually clean once in a great while) right across the hall, but people never seem to find this one in their search for the loo. It’s very embarrassing, but apparently not embarrassing enough to bring me to clean it. I just don’t have time to spend on a bathroom that doesn’t get used by us. Anyways, just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in your bathroom non-cleaning ways.
We also had rag rolled paint in every room of our last house. I think the previous owner was addicted to Trading Spaces. One room had a pink sunset, flowers, and butterflies. Can you say Awesome? I don’t know how to add pics here, otherwise I’d send one your way.
Sarah
PS. Love the sticker art. So fun!

I learn something new every single day! I didn’t know that. And, that turned out so cute Katie!

I totally love this and your blog 🙂 You know what colors I see with this, Kelly Green in this bathroom, I just think it would be super cute!!!! Well anything will with this sticker art! 🙂 You are awesome and an amazing mom. Just thought I’d throw that in there!

Looks so cool from a distance, and even better close-up! I will admit that I am a 24-year old with a box of stickers…but no temporary tattoos! I have lived in my house for a year and 2 months and the entire upstairs is still just full of boxes I haven’t unpacked yet, so needless to say there is hardly any art on my walls yet either. I hope the people that sent me expensive wedding gifts 6 months ago don’t find out that most of them are still in boxes! When I first moved in last summer, I was so excited to be a homeowner and did some painting on the walls and ripped out carpet, and then somehow lost steam and am still living in an unfinished house. Thanks so much for your last post, it has inspired me to get back on track of making my house a “home.”

p.s. pin worthy 🙂

Allow me to recount the last 15 minutes of my life:
Me: “GASP! Hubs!!!”
Hubs: “What?! What’s wrong??”
Me: “You HAVE to see what Katie Bower did!”
Hubs: “Do we know her? Wait, you didn’t hurt yourself? Can you please work on your ‘I’m excited’ versus ‘Oh-my-gosh-we’re-all-going-to-die’ voices?”
Me: “Yeah, yeah. LOOK. They’re STICKERS. It’s STICKER art!!”
And then I was forced to explain in painstaking detail what I was talking about and that I just read an article called Sticker Shock in the September Elle Decor where a young artist/decorator was stickering entire walls (and then yanked the magazine from it’s handy spot with the pile of other magazines under my laptop to show him.)
Point being, as a boy, and one who was never really into stickers, he didn’t quite grasp my overwhelming enthusiasm, but I was beyond thrilled and inspired to see something “couture” done so awesomely in your house!
Thank you for being that person who inspires so many of us!

The sticker art idea is awesome! I really like it. I also like that you admit to not really cleaning the kids’ bathroom. (I mean it’s not like babies use ’em yet, right? I just occasionally swipe at the dust bunnies in there!) 🙂

Love it! I read that on Little Green Notebook yesterday too. I can’t believe that girl did her whole room and that it looked so awesome (as does yours)!

I have been peeping some ideas on how to make the home more kid friendly and I must say that this idea would have never hit me upside the head. Thnx for the idea…its so getting pinned! Have a happy weekend:)

I never would have guessed it was sticker art. That is a great idea. I have that wall treatment too.=) I mean I don’t but just so you don’t feel alone can say I do. Six months is still a short time..you will get things done eventually. Keep taking your time. I mean except for the whole wedding thing happening at your place.=)

This is too cute and is so fun in the bathroom! how creative – totally pinning this!
Oh and I know it’s preseason but Go Steelers!!!

Wow Katie that is so beautiful! I love how you put everything together to make such an awesome looking piece! Although I love stickers (stickopotamus binder anyone haha I know I had a nice collection…) I know I could never put something together to look as nice as that. Love it!

I just wanted to say thank you! This post really touched my heart. I recently found out that I miscarried, and reading “this two shall pass” made me feel so much better. I am a christian, and sometimes I forget that it is God’s plan and timing not mine.
I read your blog everyday and your love for God and your family just touches my heart.
Katie says
heehee…
actually we’ve not used that bathroom if you can believe it. not once. Jeremy just told me that he’s only been in it once or twice 🙂

That is so awesome! I actually saw her post the other day and was thinking that it looked really cute, but there is NO WAY I would take that much time to cover an entire room in stickers – but just as art in one spot it’s totally doable. Love it. Just might try it for my little ones bathroom which is lacking a little love.
sarah says
KB you’re awesome. That is all.
Abby says
Katie that looks awesome! I saw Jen’s post about this sticker art too! But you did a great job!

Looks great. And I do appreciate you not showing the steps. It makes me C R A Z Y when folks walk you through each and every single boring basic easy-as-pie step as if we are idiots.

I think it kind of looks like a family crest. Great job!

Blue ragged walls are TOTALLY coming back 😉 You must have that patience that only a mother can muster…to lay all those stickers out so nicely. Love it!

LOVE IT! So cute and it would be great for a kid to do him/herself. Too bad I don’t (yet) have said child lol. I have a sticker collection too; enough that I even have the same frogs and hippos in mine 🙂 and I am crazy enough to recognize them…

Katie,
What a great idea! I needed a creative baby gift for the newest nephew and I LOVE the sticker idea! The theme for the room is dinosaurs and I think I could probably find all kinds of stickers for this project. My two guys are in high school, so doing something creative and cute for a little one will be fun!
Thanks for all your ideas! I found you through Sherry and I love reading your blog. You make me smile every time I do.
Jennifer
p.s. Leaving a house that was your home is always emotional. I’m glad you found someone to love it as much as you did.

I’d come and help you if I lived close, not because you haven’t cleaned the bathroom, but I know exactly how you feel. It only took me two years to hang art and three years to paint the most hideous bathroom in the world after we moved in. I hated going in the bathroom and would clean it as fast as I could just to get out of it. You’ve got nothing on me and you are raising a baby, I have teenagers!
The sticker art is so cute and colorful!

I found your blog looking for cute teacher themed baby shower ideas and found myself still reading through your sticker art. I had to laugh out loud (or at least very quietly since my four little ones are all sleeping) when you asked, “Doesn’t everyone (have a box full of stickers and tattoos)?” Yes! I did have a box labeled exactly the same! Somehow, my collection has grown and now I have two separate boxes.
Your blog is very enjoyable to read and I was very inspired by your teacher baby shower menu. Thanks!!

Katie, I have been following you for many months now, and I couldn’t resist commenting after seeing this post, I loooove it! Actually I think I love everything abt you and ur blog! Cheers!

Hi Katie! What a nice idea indeed! Now I only have to find stickers that are nice enough to create my own piece of art! Do you varnish it or something like that so it doesn’t come off?
Katie says
I didn’t and the stickers haven’t moved a lick. I don’t think it’s a bad idea though if your stickers don’t seem sticky enough!
