Will got a number of ‘doubles’ when it came to his birthday presents…we were beyond thankful. Thankful for the generous friends & family members that took the time to come to the party and to celebrate our little boy…but also for their gifts of love. and obviously for the gift receipts.
And that is how we scored a swing for Will.
Jeremy bought some chain, a carabiner, and a big fat eyehook and we decided to hang it under the deck so that we could sit & push while looking out at the yard.
Side note – Will has toddler legs. He completely skipped the baby fat rolls and went straight to the muscley walker’s legs of a toddler. I kinda feel jipped. I was full-on expecting some food stuck in leg creases and squeezy chunks that begged for squishing.
He has become very interested in all our projects lately. It’s interesting to see him watch us. He gets right in the mix whenever the drill is out (or any power tool) and he likes to pick up & throw every piece that we pull out for DIYing.
After Jeremy did the final latching…the clip and hang…
he did his infamous pull test. This is the test that we do every time we hang anything. It’s the Code of Jeremy. Picture frames, toilet paper holders, coat hooks….all are thoroughly tested.
I was so excited.
Will was not.
Weirdo. I don’t know of any kids that don’t love swings. Except my child. It takes some coaxing.
Eventually though he got the swing of things. Yes. That was intended.
I must say that I love kiddie-izing this place. I thought I would hate it. But I was wrong. There is nothing better to me than being able to walk around and have tons of things to do with our kid right here in our own home.
I wasn’t so sure about hanging the swing from one hook…but now I love it. It swirls and spins and takes the little guy for a true ride.
Of course, our little guy could only take a couple minutes of that rollercoaster till he decided that indeed, he was not a fan.
We’ll have to work on it, I guess.

Will looks like a mini version of his daddy! Jeremy could have saved you a whole bunch of time by just sending himself through a copy machine. (But then you wouldn’t have had to spend any time trying to get pregnant, so…nevermind. Carry on!)

What a cute little boy 🙂

Aww cute legs!!
Love the swing, he will get used to it in time I guess… You should get a slide and a climbing frame next! One of them little fisher price ones ! Oooh that’ll be fun !
Oh – and I love the strength test…… *swoon*
Carla says
Will is too cute! Maybe if Cole shows him he swing is fun then he might like it?!
lynn says
Jeremys hot. But I digress…Isnt if funny the things you think kids will love, and they dont?! I thought my daughter would LOVE her bouncy seat. Id love nothng more than to sit around in a soft velour-y seat that VIBRATES! Adults would have to pay like 3 grand at Brookstone to get something like that?! But noooo…she hates it. I agree with the pp that maybe if COle shows how much fun it can be..Will may like it. Monkey See Monkey Do.
lynn says
thats a great idea!

I love the posts about your family. Will is absolutely adorable!! I agree with Carla and Lynn maybe if he sees Cole swinging he will think it’s a fun thing. Love your photography too Katie

Katie, I love reading your blog and seeing all your beautiful pictures. You have such a beautiful family and home. I even have my husband reading it now too. After a while he wanted to know where I was coming up with all these DIY ideas, so I directed him here 🙂 It’s a family affair now!

I love that Will is turning into a DIY helper. Maybe when he’s older, he and Jeremy will build a tree house or fort together!
Amy says
Just put my 8 month old in a swing last night for the first time and he cried too!!!! I thought kids were born to love swings!
Megan says
Oh no! Hopefully he’ll grow to love swinging. That was one of my favorite past times as a kid.
Tara says
Will will surely love the swing. He just needs some time. Both my kids didnt love the baby swing at home at all as babies & the swings in the park. Looking back I think they just didnt like the feeling of being suspended in mid-air.But now that they are older they love the swings to sit in the park.
Will keeps looking cute or shall i say handsome day by day 🙂
Tiffany says
Will is such a cutie! When I was his age, my mom said I used to hold my breath when they put me in a swing, scream every now and then when I needed to breathe, and go back to holding my breath!! Apparently I was quite dramatic and did not swing very often! Hopefully Will will learn to love swinging!!
Melissa @ HOUSEography says
Oddly my son did not like swinging either at that age. Only when he was about 20 months did he start to like it and he liked the toddler bucket type much better than the infant one. I don’t think he liked laying back. Poor kid also gets carsick so maybe that has something to do with it! Try it again in a few weeks and see what happens. My son now BEGS to swing!
Katiejo says
My 3 year old never liked to swing either when he was Will’s age. He still doesn’t. He’d much rather be running around and I think he saw the swing as too confining (even though he was technically still moving). He’s not a sit and relax kind of kid… I’m just hoping that soon enough he’ll be big enough to push me!
Step2 has a great beginner play set where he can climb and slide and it is pretty much completely confined so you don’t have to worry about him falling.
Krysta @ Domestic for Dummies says
I love that you called him a weirdo. I am sure he will learn to love it soon.
Christine says
Oh – I know the feeling of getting all excited about doing something for your baby and then the bit of disappointment when they don’t like it or don’t care. Boo.
He will love it! I love the feet pictures.
Lindsay Loucks says
Sheesh! crying my eyes out! Thanks for the inspiration-baby boy just woke up from his nap and we are gettin’ outside!
Kaitlin says
Will’s little pathetic “I hate this face” gave me a great laugh this AM. He’s such an expressive little guy!
Did you get your first issue of Organic Gardening?! I got mine the other day…hoooray!
Cordia says
Oh those legs look squeezable to me! Neither of my boys got the fat rolls. Both were/are slender. I think my 5 yr old son is a weirdo for not liking mashed potatoes, or much of anything else! 😛
chris says
thats one LOADED diaper! lol maybe thats why he didnt want to swing..squish
Emily says
Your blog is my fave, I feel like I know your little family, you are so open and genuine.
Rachel says
If Will is anything like me, swingin’ in circles might make him motion sick!
Ashley says
Hey! I have been a reader for about a year now and I love your blog! I found you through some other link and got hooked! I have a six and a half month old little boy, Elijah, so I love reading about Will and seeing where we will be in just a few months! 🙂
Ann says
We had a swing like that and over time, the eye hook gave out. Luckily ours was one of those old rattan swings so the chain hit the swing itself, not the swing occupant. Be careful.
Alison says
Such a perfect shady spot for a swing. As for liking the swing – our son just became a fan at the age of three. Now he doesn’t want to get out of it.
Amy H says
Hoping Jeremy’s family in Chattanooga is safe after all these storms. We are in Ringgold, GA and they have certainly taken their toll on us.
Sarah says
What a great idea. Will is absolutely adorable (no rolls and all!). My 4 (soon to be 5) yo still doesn’t like the swings. We just do not get it.
Mary Jo says
Katie-my kids are way past the kiddie swing stage (ages 8 & 11) which is why it’s so fun to read your blog and see the beautiful pictures of Will just being a little boy. Every time I see him (especially in just his diaper and socks), I just want to pick him up and snuggle. (Is that totally weird?) I miss that! He is the perfect combination of you and your husband – I can easily see both of you in his face.
Tiffany says
Little pushes are the key to getting Will comfortable with the swing. Big one,s at his age, could really freak him out.
Katie says
I’m so sorry to hear that Amy. Yes…Jer’s folks are fine…and they are helping with the efforts 🙂
Hope you guys are doing better soon.

oh thanks for the word of warning Ann! We will definitely keep our eyes peeled for any wear and tear!

Katie says
haha…actually that diaper isn’t that loaded 🙂 It’s just that it’s one size too small and the boy pee all pools in the front…obviously…so it makes for a diaper that looks loaded…but I swear that they get way bigger than that…I should know…I neglect changing him 🙂

I just bought one for my next door neighbors little boy. My son loved to swing when he was little. I spent hours pushing him! He still loves to jump on our swing set and swing for a while- he’s now 9.
