It’s done – the Dream House is officially ours!
On Monday, February 14th, Valentines Day 2011, we signed the papers to make our dream house officially our home.
It might interest some of you to know that Jeremy had been a loan officer when we dated….and so he was very familiar with reading all about interest rates, terms, and loan types. And when the day came to sign on the dotted line, we knew that the setup was as good as we could get. And we even prepped ourselves mentally to walk into closing with the attitude of “if it can go wrong, it will go wrong”. So you can imagine our surprise and delight when upon entering the conference room, that the lawyer told us that the sellers had closed that morning and that everything was in order and ready for signature. Literally, thirty minutes of pen-weilding, candy-eating, joke-telling and drink-sipping passed and we were officially responsible for the new home. Talk about a happy Valentines day present!
Here’s a photo I snapped of Jer as he furiously signed all the paperwork…
(yes our closing attorney looks like Michael Chiklis from No Ordinary Family…the resemblence is uncanny.)
and Will? Yeah – house purchasing wouldn’t have been a family affair without the littlest member there…so we set him up in the corner of the conference room with his Winnie-the-Pooh blocks and he was happy as a clam to attend his first (and hopefully last) closing. It actually was a perfect scenario because even if Will hadn’t been a-ok with a little corner playtime, the closing attorney’s office had an entire room dedicated to all things kiddie…and he would have had a darling time in there with all the books, toys and videos. Isn’t it amazing what you start to appreciate when you become a parent? Never in my single life would I have been so grateful for a toddler-safe room. breast-enhancing-chicken-cutlets? yes. baby room? no.
Anyhoo….after we signed the paperwork and shook the hands of our attorney, loan officer and real estate agent, we breathed a huge sigh of relief and realized that this was the biggest V-day gift we had ever bought one another. Seriously though – we cleaned up the toy corner and walked to the car with a huge to-do list. After all – we are going to be moving!
When are we moving? Well…that leads us to another point….we are officially under a lease/purchase contract with a couple for our current house (!!!!!). The offer came in last week (as well as a different renter offer for more than we were asking!) and after a little counteroffer business, they agreed to terms and we are very pleased to have that entire process wrapped up. One of the terms is that the new buyers would like to move in March 1st. That means we have little less than two weeks to get the Dream House move-in ready and then actually move into it.
WHEW! So after closing went smoother than a newly-shaved-chest-on-Jacob-the-warewolf, we had high hopes of accomplishing lots more on our to-do list. But first we went to the house to do a happy dance on the dirty hardwood floor of our new foyer. Imagine us driving there with perma-grins….all jittery and excited….we were like little kids in a candy store except happier. and a little more It was all very romantic and sereal…pulling up to the house and realizing that it actually happened…it actually belongs to us…and Jeremy, in the spirit of romance, even carried me over the threshold. I told him he had to. Afterall, our first night in our first house was our wedding night (when he carried a twenty pound lighter version of me through the doorway and up the stairs). Don’t worry – I didn’t make him carry me too far…afterall, he’s got to be in tip-top shape for when we have to move furniture!
While we were there, we went ahead and did some number crunching – number of exterior door locks (13 doorhandle/deadbolt sets), size of space for fridge and dishwasher (standard), and distance to nearest store (2.1 miles to Dollar General).
After that it was off to Home Depot to price carpet. We are seriously considering the Martha Stewart Living carpet. It’s called Winterthur and I think our color choice right now is Ash Bark. And as much as I like the design – I adore the price (1.95 a square foot! and $39 installation!). We also scheduled for our house to be measured – so we will be able to get a better idea of the total dollar amount for all four upstairs bedrooms.
Next up was Lowes – where we looked at water heaters, garage door motors, and appliances.
We wrapped up the day at HH Gregg. Their appliance prices were the lowest out of all the stores we looked at (especially since they always knock off some of the advertised price). Let me tell you – shopping was not easy. You may think that you could pick out a refridgerator…but when you are faced with 25 seemingly similar french doors…you will quickly learn that it’s harder than those bodies on the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit magazine. 2 hours in I was on the floor pretending I was Will…banging the drawers as hard as I could, rubbing spitcovered hands on the stainless steel to see which ones showed the most smudges, and testing the hanging weight limit of the doors. You know – kid’s quality tests.
So that was our day in a nutshell covered with chocolate. Oh and we did manage to get home in time to snap a couple photos of the little heartbreaker for Valentines Day. Without further adieu – Mr. Friar “I like to bang your bongos” Tuck –
How was your valentines day? Anything exciting? What did the hubby getcha? Any crazy or strange gifts? I love the stories of when the guy buys the girl a toaster. It gets me all warm inside (punnned!)…

Congratulations Bowers! Seems like everything came together in the end! 🙂 I love Will’s Valentines Day card. So cute.
My husband didn’t get home until almost 8pm on Valentines Day (he’s a pilot) so we quickly ate stir fry and split a coke in a bottle (my present to him) and then brought cookies to all our friends. Super duper romantic. So much magic happened here… But not the kind of magic you’re thinking. 😉

Congrats on the new house! We expected to have a quiet V-Day. Instead, my mother-in-law had her gallbladder removed, then her house caught on fire upon returning home. She spent the rest of the day with my sick self and our sick 12 month old. Then my husband’s whole family came over for dinner. We kept telling each other “happy valentine’s day” in the most sarcastic tones. 🙂

Congrats on the new house!!! That is SO exciting!! Our V-day is almost always the same, it is my Birthday so we normally either go out to eat with my parents or my mom cooks. This year my mom cooked such a yummy meal, my 90 year old grandmother who never drinks got drunk so she was the entertainment for the evening, and my husbands puts 32 actual candles on the cake. I will return the favor at his b-day.

Congrats on the new home! My hubby and I just bought our first about two months ago, and I hear you on fridge shopping! We don’t have any kiddos, but I changed my mind THREE times before picking the right one. (When I say changed my mind, I mean that the fridge was installed and I decided to send it back. Twice. With two different refrigerators. The hubs thought I had totally lost my mind. But then we ended up with the third and perfect one and I am SO glad that I didn’t settle. I’m still completely insane, though!) For Valentine’s Day, we enjoyed a fancy cheese platter at home while watching TV. Just thought I’d mention it because you seem like someone who can really appreciate a good cheese platter 🙂

Yay, so exciting for your family!!!
Don’t know if y’all are going to be looking for washer and dryers but Home Depot has an amazing deal for a GE washer and dryer. Our dryer bit the dust and washing clothes without one is a big pain and I have been on the hunt. This was definitely the best deal that I found and they deliver and install for free, but this is only good if you purchase online.

I am going to give you some unsolicited advice on the Home Depot carpet (you probably already know this and if so please ignore me).
Make sure they give you a price quote for everything. The carpet is inexpensive but they’ll charge you more for a decent carpet pad (8 lbs will be good for the kiddo(s)) and the $39 installation sometimes doesn’t include haul away of the old carpet or other things like that. The other thing is to ask the Home Depot employees if they’ve actually met the installers in person and if they’d have them install carpet at their own house. I did this at HD and the woman actually changed who she sent to our home and assured me the guy for the job was awesome which made me feel a lot better.
Good luck! Your carpet choice is beautiful and I’m sure it will work out really well but I just wanted to share my tips!

Congratulations! I know it will feel like a huge rush, but our family had to move out of our apartment and into a hotel for nearly a month before we were able to close (bank owned property and an USDA rural development loan) and move into our house (my son wasn’t allowed to walk around without shoes on for two weeks because we pulled up the carpet the day we got keys in anticipation of the new carpeting being laid… whenever. Lowe’s was pretty slow on getting around to it even though we’d ordered the carpet before we even closed on the house). Two weeks is plenty of time to get things “liveable” and then you’ll have a whole lifetime to get things just the way you want them. :o)

Congratulations!!! What a wonderful Valentine’s present! And kudos to you three in making it through a marathon shopping day with baby Will. That in itself deserves an award. 🙂

Well since you asked, my hubby and I celebrated our first Valentines as parents. We shared dinner at the kitchen table over candlelight, smeared with baby food, and feeding our little one who was sitting between us. After our little one was down for the night, we watched a movie, 30 minutes into it I was passed out! My, how things have changed!

I saw you mention that you counted the locks and deadbolts! And just a quick tip you may already be aware of: my husband and I also bought a foreclosed home recently, and we found a locksmith so we just sliped out the deadbolts and unscrewed all the door locks and took them in (while the other sat at home protecting our new abode) and they changed each one for less than 5 bucks a piece! Saved us tons of money and we felt much more secure!
cheree says
congrats on the new diggs. when we sold our last home, my husband couldn’t be there so I had power of attorney. since we were closing and moving to a new state I had our dog with me {and a car packed full of last minute stuff that didn’t go in the moving truck}. the lawyers were nice enough to let our dog come to the closing since my only other option was to leave her in the car with the AC running (it was July in the south).
Julieanne says
We too had a really hard time getting our home. It was a short sale and it ended up taking a long (stressful) year to finally close. Even after we got the keys it felt like they were going to yank them back from us. We couldn’t believe it was finally ours, so we quickly put new locks on the door that night 🙂
We ended up having to move in two days! We hadn’t packed a thing simply because we couldn’t handel the heartbreak if it didn’t happen. Six months before we were three days from closing when things went up in smoke.
Let me tell you, with help it is possible. We cleaned Friday night (the night we got it). The house was a disaster, so that was the pre-clean. Saturday was the actual cleaning day with lots of help from friends, and Sunday we moved (again with lots of help) Girls packed while boys moved. We had to be out Sunday night so it was a frenzy… and very humbling. You know you have good friends when they have seen under your bed, dust bunnies and forgotten items and all, and are still your friends the next day.
I hope you are a little encouraged. You can do it, and it will be worth it.

Just a random thought for you to help save some nickles and dimes! When we moved we picked up a packet from our local post office, inside was all the stuff needed to transfer addresses. Wahoo!! Congrats!!
I would really suggest you guys shop local flooring stores, with my husband in the flooring industry for a carpet mill, I can tell you that Home Depot and Lowes have a ton of hidden costs (you have to have all the carpet removed, pad removed and new tact strips in place) and they always come in more expensive than carpet/flooring stores. Also, it’s not really $1.98 it’s actually sold by yards ($17.82) thats a way to make carpet look less expensive AND you have to buy their pads, standard pad is $5 a yard, they’re charging $3 sqft. Martha Stewart is made by Shaw Industries, it’ll called something else in the store but if you give them a few days they’ll be able to find the cross reference. That is NOT my husbands company (I’m not trying to sell you on Shaw) but if that’s the one you want you really should look at carpet/flooring store.
Good luck and congrats again!!

Hi Katie-
I don’t normally leave comments, but I happened upon your blog a few weeks ago and have been happy for you as you’ve updated about your “dream house.” My husband and I actually bought our new home a year ago and it was also a foreclosure that needed (and still needs) a lot of love and tlc, but has a ton of potential. That said, our project list was/is long and one of the first things we needed were all new appliances. I don’t know if you got yours yet, but in addition to the main stores; Sears, Home Depot, Lowes, etc., there are also a couple of “scratch and dent” outlets out here that we checked, as well as craigslist. We wanted new or like new as possible, but also the best deal available since we had so much on our list and it all adds up. A lot of what was available at the scratch and dent stores was in GREAT condition- maybe a hairline scratch or nick on the side of the fridge where it sits in the cabinet anyway, etc. We would have gone that route, but I guess the big man upstairs heard our prayers for something AFFORDABLE, and we totally got a great deal off of Craigslist! We found a guy who just moved and had a complete 1 year old stainless steel appliance set: gas range with 5 burners and 2 ovens, built-in microwave, double-door refrigerator with ice/water, etc. and dishwasher (the quiet kind). All of which were in perfect shape, energy efficient, etc. We paid $1800 for everything (hello, I priced the fridge, and new it sells for $2500+). Yeah. Crazy. Thank you Lord. We love them and know we got a steal, but I thought I would pass it on because you never know. We’ve had to think outside the box on a few things and the time, effort and sometimes wait has really paid off in our case. Your house looks beautiful and either way, I hope you find everything you’re looking for, get a great price, and enjoy every moment in it! Be Blessed~ Angela

You are going to be a geat photographer and I am so excited for you living the dream and owning your own business.
Also, loved you on Nate.
I haven’t had time to comment in a while so I thought I would just put it all in one 🙂

Congrats on finally closing! I actually have the Winterthur carpet in my dining and family rooms, and I really like it. We put some of the plain Martha plus in the other rooms, and it’s nice and soft. Can’t beat the price, anyway!

Congratulations!!
I got DH a Kreg Jig for V-day. As he said, “Nothing says love like a pocket hole jig.” Our boys (10 & 7) got their first tool box, so they can help Dad fix all the stuff that needs fixin’ in our new digs. (Closing on our own foreclosure 3/8.)
DH got me…well, himself. He’d been traveling overseas for a week+ and had an 18-hour travel day on Valentine’s Day, arriving home sick (literally) and exhausted. He got a pass on Valentine’s this year.

Congratulations! This is what I call a nice Valentine’s day present! And the fact that you now don’t have much time to move is the best option. If one has months to prepare, the move is much more stressful, they are nervous for weeks and this way, there’s no time to even think about it.
