I have a thing for sea balls. You know…those decorative orbs covered with shells. I have one in our master bedroom…
and one in our guest bathroom…
and so it was only natural that I make my own. (you just got punned…fifty points to you guys who caught it!).
I had a bunch of shells that I collected from our beach vacation and one heckova hot glue gun.
Bada boom bada bing. I love that I could make these little dittys for practically nothing.
Oh and speaking of making…I would highly suggest starting at the bottom of the ornament and overlapping the thin part of the shell. It helps. Trust me.
Isn’t it cute? And this is one ornament I can see myself using throughout the year. Maybe bookends? Maybe decorative object? Maybe two flanking my banana hammock? Sorry mom…had to go there. And no…it’s not a reflection of you. It’s a reflection of my bad reality tv habit.
Anyhoo…I love the sea inspired ornament in a bowl with other silvery and white ornaments. Jazzes it up.
Oh and can you spot the other ornaments I DIYed?
Yup…that speckly gold one. I just took a clear glass ornament…
….and one of these Krylon 18KT Gold Leafing Pen and…
squirted it till the gold leaf ran down the sides. Then I filled it with a little splash of water and shook it (like a polaroid picture). Oh and if you are attempting this at home…cover the hole with a paper towel. I say this because I will receive an email stating that someone got gold leaf in their child’s eye if I do not. Please people….save the children….cover the hole.
Yes there will be a little puddle. It’s fine. Just keep shaking. Let it air dry before capping and putting in your sea ball display.
Is it just me or is this post getting more and more perverted. I should stop typing. That’ll fix it.
But then you won’t hear about the other homemade ornament. Did you find it yet?
I can’t wait. It’s the silvery one right below the shell sphere.
Okay…now I’ll stop talking. I am sure you can figure it out.
Ok. That was long enough.
I tried it in blue too. Just for kicks. for fun. for a laugh. for a gast. (to be honest I don’t know what a gast is. It’s like passing gas in past tense. Yes, that was me who gast.)
Now sea here…I also have a thing for sea urchin shells. One time Jeremy told me that anytime he is at a beach he looks for them. I asked why…and he said that he was trying to find them for me….because they were rare to find…and so was I.
Can I get a collective round of applause for my boyfriend’s sweetness?!
I know that it sounds weird but I am glad that my Jeremy sees dead sea urchins and thinks of me. The shells are nothing short of beautiful. You can see my little collection on the window sill above the kitchen sink.
Plus I have a little sea urchin ring box I got at Goodwill.
So I thought….why not do an ornament that gives a little nod to sea urchins?
I simply took my gold leafing paint pen and did some dots in lines…just like the little urchin shells. Nothing fancy…but symbollic to me 🙂
So that is my ornamental craftiness for this year….how bout you guys? Any homemade craftiness this year when it comes to ornaments? Anybody else have a fixation on sea balls? Or any other balls for that reason? Don’t answer that. Once again…my apologies to my mother. And to you. I blame having a son….and having to change his diaper so often. It just sticks with ya…if you know what I mean.

You’re funny, Katie. For someone with the maturity level of a 12-year old boy, your post really made me giggle and laugh and revert back to dumb middle school jokes about human anato-well…I’ll just end it there…..
🙂

Just curious… and you’ve probably mentioned this in an older post… but where in the world do you keep all of these craft supplies? A crafting room? Under the bed? In the garage?
It seems like you’ve got everything that you could ever need to craft forever – it’s got to take up some space (good thing the new house is a big’un).
Thanks for the ideas!

I love them all!
But seriously. Some beautiful crafting in there. I need to locate some of those plain glass ones to craft inside. But not this year. I am soooo done holiday crafting this year.

“I like sea balls.” Totally read that as “I like seal balls.” I was like..whaa…..? Then I saw the picture, sea balls, ahhhhh ok!
Love the gold splotchy ornament, bet if you used silver if it would look like mercury glass!

Hi Alex,
Actually I keep a couple of those shoebox sized plastic boxes in the guest bedroom closet. One has paints, one has misc. items (like hot glue, rulers, glitter, etc.) and one has stickers. And then of course in the basement I have a sewing closet filled with ribbon, gift wrap and sewing supplies.
It definitely is fun!
