When we were chosen to part of the 2010 True Value blog squad, there were some major projects that we really wanted to do…
namely…painting parts of our house that hadn’t yet seen a Purdy paintbrush. That would require dusting. WHICH I HATE. But is a necessary evil. I can’t wait for the day that dust is in style. I’ll be so ahead of the curve.
Anyhoo. The upstairs hall needed some painting so we put it on our 2010 To-Do list. (The list changed by the way when we put the house on the market – but more on that later!)
Part of the upstairs had never been painted….part of it was never finished. It had sat like that since 2008. Two years of uncompletedness. Awesome. You see, in 08 we had painted the downstairs hall Churchhill Wheat. It was a great color…just not really for us. Not here. Not now.
I change my mind like I change my underpants…more often than one might think.
The problem with the Churchhill Wheat was that it had yellow undertones…and the rest of the house has green undertones. Not cool. No really…yellow undertones are quite warm.
Plus, I am the type of person that needs a little fluidity. a little calming. a little one-color-scheme-upstairs-and-downstairs. You know the type…we’re crazy.
So I whipped out the True Value card and purchased two gallons of interior eggshell paint in Grand Teton White. I always laugh whenever I hear the word Teton…mostly because my boss one time announced at a party where the word Teton comes from. Boobs. It comes from boobs people. And my boss was hilarious…he was like Michael Scott but awesomer.
The upstairs part of the hall REALLY needed painting….you can’t see some of this grossness in most photos but it was there. and it needed help.
And here it is after a little Grand Teton White-ification.
Sorry you can’t see the color as naturally as I would like.
This photo of our little foyer is probably the closest to the actual color….it’s creamy but not too yellow…and it’s clean looking.
I had different plans for this wall upstairs though.
yeah…WAY different.
Not exactly single color scheme different.
I like it though. And the funny thing is, this little accent wall cost me a total of $6. I just bought two of the Martha Stewart Bay Leaf sampler tester thingies (the only one available in green). It didn’t really look like the color on the swatch. But I like it anyway 🙂
So there we have it – one freshly painted hall…with a splash of favah!
Anyone else been painting lately? Any green accent walls in the mix? Anybody even consider whippin out the paintbrush with 2 weeks till Christmas? Or perhaps you can relate more to the whole 2-years-unfinished-project thing? Yeah…that is our life people.
And of course, one big chest bump to True Value – the ones that keep us projecting along and inspired to have green walls 🙂

Planning on painting soon. We have a BRIGHT coral and orange bedroom right now that I’m dying to tone down. Just need to find the time and the funds 🙂
Thinking of going a pale avacado color with a deep forest green accent wall to match the curtains that are already in there.
We’ll see how it goes, but seeing your paint job makes me really want to get the job done!

Do you have a tall ladder? Is that how you were able to paint so perfectly over the open staircase? We have the same issue at our house but unfortunately no tall ladder.
Jenny G. says
Love the green! Love the Teton, too, but Katie! Your horseshoe is upside down! When you hang a horseshoe, hang it so it looks like a U – otherwise all the luck runs right out!

Unfortunately I don’t have a photo to link to, but our master bedroom (the one in our primary home AND the one in our lakehouse) is painted a creamy golden yellow on 3 walls and a sage-y green accent wall behind the bed. The yellow at the lakehouse is admittedly a bit brighter, more lemon-y (don’t get too scared – it doesn’t look bad) – I guess there’s less gold in in and more yellow – but the green accent wall looks nice.
And I hated green until I chose it for my bridesmaids’ dresses when I got married at 38+ years old! Never owned a green anything for all those years!
And we just chose a green to paint our dining room (our over Xmas project)!
Katie says
I love it – great shade of green!

I’m surprised you would paint such a bold color right before moving. I love it though!
Cait @ Hernando House says
Love it, Katie!
We recently painted an accent wall in our living room that we are going to paint white birch trees on. You can see the inspirtation for what we’re planning to do in this post: http://hernandohouse.wordpress.com/2010/10/27/is-it-crazy-that/

I am all about color. The more the better. The splash of green is a perfect accent. Unexpected, fun.

Thanks for the tip Jenny – We’ll have to find a way to switch it in the new house…

We don’t have a tall ladder but my mom does and we just borrowed hers. Obviously we’ll have to get one if we ever plan on painting at the new house 🙂

I was *just* about to write the same thing. You don’t want your lucky to pour out!!

We painted our living room last night! We’re moving out of our townhouse this weekend…(I know, call me crazy!), and we had to paint everything back to its original color, a pinkish beige. Yuck. Oh! And we’re moving back to good ‘ole GA! Can’t wait!
Jenn says
You keep mentioning the new house in your responses. Does that mean they accepted your contract?
Kristen says
Love the hallway paint job! That green is a great pop of color!
I’ve been planning to paint our master bedroom and wanted to add an accent wall but I just can’t decide on a color that I love.
Katie says
We are still not officially under contract….we still get to dream though 🙂

I painted our spare room over before Thanksgiving. I had the day before off, and my husband didnt. I had mentioned painting it, and he said no, as we just painted it a kiwi green color two years ago. I decided its sometimes better to ask for forgiveness than permission, and painted the whole thing while he was at work. 🙂 It took him FOUR days to notice that it went from green to blue. LOVE the result, and am not itching to re paint the living room….unfortunately I dont think I can sneak that by him! 🙂 Love the green in your hall. It really makes the YHL prints pop!
Jaclyn says
Love, love, LOVE it!!!

Love the green paint! My husband painted our formerly boring hallway (which was a beigy color) a green very similar to yours…and it looks awesome now. We accented it with some black & white large prints…love it!
Melissa @ HOUSEography says
I love the idea of a hallway accent color. Really makes the room a space instead of just a place to walk through.
sarah {handbagsnpigtails} says
I think it looks so much better now(the green accent wall). Honestly I dont see much of a difference in the hallway color re-do but Im behind a computer screen so I’ll take your word for it.
I love that little seating area too.

Ha – I live by the Tetons, and it never gets old. Boob mountains! 🙂
Loving the green. I need an accent color in our living room (it’s currently rocking pure white, light gray, and a red couch – it’s the red couch that throws a wrench in the works).
laura says
Love the teton white!
I couldn’t help but notice that your horseshoe is hanging upside down. When I was a little girl, my daddy always told me that it should hang the other way because otherwise you’re draining all the luck out of it. Just a lil fyi 😉

Loving the green!!!
I would love to have some green in our place, im thinking in the bathroom once we have renovated it, crisp white, and grass green! woo yeah!
Eileen says
Don’t you just love the great sample size of Martha paints? I suppose if you didn’t like the color, it’d be bad. I recently did most of my kitchen with just one of the sample jars in Sharkey Gray (mind you, it’s a very small kitchen). I really like the shade of green you got, good choice!
bria says
Looks amazing, as usual!
BUT KATIE OH NO! I do believe your entryway foyer horseshoe is hanging the wrong way! “U” down lets all the luck fall out!!!!
although I do think i remember my irish grandmother telling me fairies would use it as a swing “U” up…..so up to you to pick the lesser of 2!

Very pretty!! I love it!
I just used your bow tutorial from last year. Thanks!! You should do more present wrapping videos.

I agree. I really like it alot (really makes those framed pictures POP), the color is fantastic. I feel like everything I’ve read about trying to sell a house though suggests toning down bright colors on walls and stuff?
Anyway, I still LOVE the color. Kinda gives me an idea for what I could do up my own beige staircase. 🙂

Love the new consistent colour. Much yumier! Oh and the Green hallway wall is awesome!!! I’ve been in love with the idea of a green wall in my house (unfortunately hubby and I are still renting) since i saw this house tour on apartment therapy. Check out what they did with their green wall! http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/sf/ellies-handmade-first-home-house-tour-119942

oooo! and it also reminds me of this green wall behind the faux fireplace at an anthropologie store! http://www.younghouselove.com/2009/09/golly-gee-anthropologie/

Love that accent wall! Totally different than what I was expecting to see from you…way to keep us on our toes! 😉 Our living room is close to that shade…as well as I can tell through the computer screen at least. It was WAY bright for us at first, but with creams, browns, and reds…it seems to be the perfect fit for us now.

That was an issue with painting our stairwell too. Luckily my Dad has a small scaffold. SO much easier and safer than a ladder.
The previous owner obviously had neither a scaffold or a ladder: She had clearly just taped the roller to the end of a broom or something and just rolled right over the cornices (crown molding). And the walls weren’t the same colour as the ceiling so the messy finish was totally obvious.
Alicia Parsons | Atypical Type A says
Love the colour! The area looks so crisp and fresh now.
Are the prints from John & Sherry?

My whole life is an unfinished project 🙂 I love it that way though! I’m never bored because I always have something to do 🙂
The accent wall is great! I really like that pillow on the chair too!

Bay Leaf! I used that color in my kitchen, and it really makes the room fun. (It might sound like a bit much since it’s such a strong color, but I have white tile w/ black tile edging from the 50’s more from floor to more than halfway up each wall. The color was needed and it goes great with all of that tile and my white cabinetry).
You’re making me want to paint my living room even more. The paint in that one room is just in the wrong color profile compared to the rest of the house. (Wrong undertones!)
Crystal says
LOVE the paint color and LOVE the green! Fantastic job:)

I’m loving the updated wall,
We definitely know what its like to live in an unfinished house! We are currently renting since we are in the middle of a renovation of a 1904 farmhouse build by my adoring ” boyfriend”‘s great grandfather. Flooring needs to be done, walls built, bathrooms and a kitchen, not to mention replacing an old add on with a much needed extra space/bedroom. #3 is on the way! Can’t wait till its livable!
