Have I mentioned that I love taking maternity photos? Because I do. I love them. A lot.
I think it has something to do with the fact that most pregnant women feel especially vulnerable on the other side of the camera…maybe because they can barely move….maybe because they don’t feel their best…or perhaps it has something to do with the anticipation of what’s next. Whatever causes that vulnerablity…that softness…that shear feminity, I love seeing it. It’s raw and special and REAL.
Needless to say, I was thrilled when my friend from church, Becky, asked if I was available to take some maternity photos for her. I can’t imagine how different this baby experience will be for them – you see, Becky & her husband were expecting a little girl which is definitely exciting since they already have three strapping boys. During the shoot, I was able to snag a few individual shots too. So basically this was a maternity/family shoot. Fun stuff.
Oh and since the time of the shoot, Becky actually HAD her baby. A 12 pound 2 oz, 24.5 inch long baby at home with no medication! Yes you read that right. Pretty unbelievable right? And they named her Tirzah Ruth.
Now for the photos:
Those last two are my favorites. Her blue eyes just POP. It makes me wanna run out and get some Freshlook contacts. And considering we were just in her pretty plain backyard, I feel like we got a diverse number of shots. What do you think? I know that there are a number of pregnant gals out there….anyone sharing maternity photos that would link up?
And I hope you join me in congratulating Becky…she’s a real trooper for birthing that 12 pounder….and I thought Will was big!

Your photos are amazing! And the family is beautiful! Look at how handsome those boys are. Wow. I love it. I wish I lived closer. I’d ask you to take some photos for me (but I’m not pregnant, so would you anyway?! lol)
You are so talented!
And holy cow! A 12 pound baby?!?! Here I was so proud of how “big” my 9 lb baby was. Hahaha!

You’re a fabulous photographer! I love these photos and how much they capture about the family. And 12 lbs? Wow.
Kayt says
They’re such a sweet looking family! Her husband looks like John Elway to me. Loving the shot with all the hands on her belly.
Kristi W says
Nice work, Katie! Are you still using your 50mm lens for these portrait shoots?
Cait @ Hernando House says
These are great, Katie! I love the one of her laying in the grass!
Audrey says
Oh my goodness! My little girl didn’t weigh 12 pounds until her 4 month check up! And she gave birth naturally, at home where a bunch of boys live?!?! Becky is my new hero, sorry Katie. You’re going to have to do more than have 9 pound babies and make walls out of old pallets to impress me from now on! 🙂
Kelly says
WOW! Congrats Becky on that BIG baby girl!
LOVE the pictures Katie…I’m due in 2 weeks…wanna come to Ohio and get some shots?!
Katie D. says
WOW!! 12 pounds and NATURAL!!! when I first started reading and saw the 12 pound part I was convinced it had to be c-section but my goodness!! She is brave!! These pictures turned out great!! Katie, aren’t you in the GA area? I also live in GA and would love to meet up to do some pictures of my family. Also, have you ever tried weddings?
Caitlin says
Great job again, Katie! You are an amazing photographer, especially considering you’ve only had your dslr for two years. Congrats to beautiful Becky and her family. A 12 pounder – whoa, you go girl!
maggie says
Great photos! Just wondering hows the “take a picture of will everyday for the first year” thing was coming? have you stuck with it? i couldnt imagine how hard it is to do that every day :0)
Julie says
Great pictures. I’m sure she will treasure them for a lifetime. BTW, totally thought her husband was a son until I scrolled down and saw the picture of them together. He looks SO YOUNG! She is beautiful!
Katie says
Hi Maggie,
Good question – I have stuck with it but it’s not as fun as I thought. I am also doing a couple photo montages of 16 facial and body photos for each month…it’s a lot easier to look at his changes and personality that way. It’s definitely fun to see his photos either way though.

Hi Katie D,
I am in the east metro Atlanta area and love doing family photos…if you are interested, email me and I can send you my photography info sheet. And yes, I have done ONE wedding and it will probably be my last…the stress of it just wasn’t my cup of tea. I prefer the maternity, family, child and newborn stuff. Its much more relaxed and I feel like I can capture the best pictures that way 🙂

Ho-ly Moley!!! 12 lbs and no meds??? What a woman! I really love the one of her on the grass. Very pretty
Katie says
She’s my hero too Audrey…and check this out – the White family is moving to Malaysia shortly to be full-time missionaries…talk about inspirational.

Katie says
Yup. It was definitely harder in this shoot than others in the past because getting that f-stop to be just right for all five faces to be in focus while still blurring the background was tricky…but thankfully I got a few to work out and I hope that I can just chock it up to a lesson learned 🙂

i love them! my 50mm is my favorite lens too 🙂 i mostly shoot weddings, but would love to get into doing some maternity shoots as well. These came out amazing…the depth of field really adds to the photos and helps to focus on their faces.
My favorite is the beautiful mama laying in the grass, beautiful contrast!
Felicita says
Awesome photos!!!
12 pounds? I’m speechless.
Lorilyn says
12 lbs and no happy pills? That is hands down, the most impressive thing I have heard all year.
Great pictures (gotta love family portraits, they are so scrumptious) and congrats Becky!
Jane @ The Borrowed Abode says
I love the photos and angles you think to take for these shoots! My best friend just started doing pro photography and had the same comment as you about portrait/family/maternity shots vs. doing actual weddings. Great minds . . . 🙂
Brandi C says
Great job Katie! My favorites are the one with mama and her 3 boys and the photo of her laying down. Beautiful.
Cami says
12 pounds?! That woman is a saint.
Becky says
wow, i myself was a 12lb 1oz baby…and the fourth child – and my mother tried and tried but could get me out. I can’t believe THIS becky was able to do it. She is amazing. AND they are going with four children to be missionaries – boy am I a slob! 🙂
my fav is the pic of all the hands on the belly. love love love it
Lori in OR says
Love the one of Becky on the grass. The background just melts away and you focus on her eyes and that big belly – lovely!
I agree that her husband does not look nearly old enough to have those children!
Destiny says
You did it again — and you outdid yourself!

Say whaaaaat??? A 12 lb baby?? Bless her heart! Love your photos as always, keep up the good work! 🙂

Great pics! My husband and I have had our eyes on a new camera (big fancy one with mega lenses!). Thanks for your tips in past posts on taking great photos.
I also happened to be reading this post with my sister who is 14 weeks preggers and after hearing about the 12lb. baby she turned absolutely white! Then with the addition of “home birth” I almost had to pick her up off the floor! 🙂 A shout out of “Holy Courageousness” is sent to your friend!
ashley says
oh I love the last two also! These are great…but 12 pounds…oh lordy. HUGE congratulations to her!
Cindy says
You did a great job on the photos. Daddy looks like the 4th son — so young!
NOW for the birth stats… Holy. Guacamole. My youngest was 10 lb 13 oz and I labored at home with a doula until I was at 8 cm and then delivered at the hospital with no drugs. Becky makes me sound like an amateur!
Congratulations to the family. 🙂
Holly says
I think you’ve found a new career Katie! These pictures are great – I had to scroll back up and re-read the post again to make sure it was only 3 sons, that’s one young looking Dad! And Becky looks beautiful – Congrats to the whole family! High five to Becky for being able (and willing) to give birth naturally to a 12 pounder 🙂
Nicole says
Holy Hannah! That woman deserves a HUGE reward! My 2 month old is just over 10 pounds and 23 inches…cannot imagine a 12 pound, 24 incher!
