Ya’ll all know I am a few eggs short of a full nest. Especially when it comes to one of my obsessions – birds.
I can’t help it.
They make me coo-coo.
I have quite a little collection of ceramic birds in our den,
and three bird cages (1 not shown and 2 of which need a little spraypaint action),
I drooled over my mother’s Christmas tree last year,
and I even made some bird art in honor of our state tweeter.
And yes, I get my fair share of teasing from friends when they enter our bird-themed home. Of course, there are the basic ‘did you catch the avian flu?’ jokes and ‘little pecker’ jabs but that didn’t stop us. Actually we like making fun of ourselves too. My personal favorite bird themed item was a very special avian deviled egg plate – fondly referred to as the cockadoodle plate – and boy was it devilish.
Here’s a visual:
That’s right. Not just one. But TWO dirty words on one plate…if you look at it right. Sadly we had to retire the plate to a recent yard sale because of too many questions from this little one. My spirits were dashed. Until recently. Just this past week, Pottery Barn lifted my spirits and made me feel like I was the feathered queen of the world.
That’s right…in their new catalog, Pottery Barn featured birds out the wazoo. Everything from home decor to dinnerware to big beautiful birdcages took centerstage and in my humble opinion, stole the showfeathers.
There were birds cages,
pillows,
sculptural pieces,
dinnerware,
smell goods,
decor,
and even accessories for a bird-ilicious tablesetting.
Basically it was enough to make my heart flutter faster than a hummingbirds’ wings.
So tell me – are you into the birds as much as I am? Because it is a borderline internet offense how much I am on Pottery Barn’s website with all these great bird-themed items. Any favorites? I am seriously lusting after those pillows that look like they are painted but are actually finely stitched to resemble the nest. And those woven chargers that look like your plate is nestled into a birds nest? Holy hot chicken tamole. And those wire bird cages…yesthankyoupotterybarnIwilltake17please. Or maybe you are completely obsessed with something totally different…say horses or colored glass jars or silk pillows?
Whatever your obsession – spill your guts…except if its cockadoodle plates. You get zero points. You dirty thing you.

I’m obsessed too. I love the pillows and the artwork!

Shut up!! I’m shaking with excitement over here for all of the LOVELY bird wares. I too fear my house is going to look like a giant bird cage itself, containing all of my bird paraphanalia. Love everything PB has and cannot WAIT to go check it out in person. Thanks for posting the finds!
Nancy says
I’m there with your with the birdie adoration. I love, love, love birds! I even call my high school students one of many bird names. I think I’m going to have to stop by PB to check out their collection.
Meredith says
I love birds too!! We had a birdcage as a cardholder at a wedding, and there were birds and nests on our invitations. It was beautiful! I’m excited Pottery Barn is sharing the birdy goodness, because I love bird accessories. Thanks so much!!
Hailey says
My obsession…anything green. But not any color green. It has to be the bight, lime color green…commonly called Chartreuse. It seems to be everywhere these days too! I can’t walk into TJ Maxx without bringing home something green. Luckily, I have these nice corner hutches built into our dinning room that I am using to display my stuff. Currently I have: a milk pitcher, some cake plates, a pie dish, two vases and some small nick knacks. I just about bought a green tea kettle last weekend…but then I remembered I was trying to cut back on the frivolous spending. Oh…and I plan on painting our front door green this spring! Our bedding is also green…and our bathroom and craft room and my Coach purse….ok, you get the point.
Megan says
I agree- I’m in love with all the bird-themed items at Pottery Barn. Especially those bird plates. I actually have a specific bird obsession…owls! I also lust after anything pinecone related and plan on doing some of my own pinecone art.

Would having 58 Eiffel towers be considered an obsession?
Melissa says
I have a thing for birds to. I have some resin ones, some ceramic ones, one rather large wooden birdcage, etc. I also got the new pottery barn in and was telling my dear hubby that I was finally in with the now. haha! I don’t know if I can pick a fave. I really love the nest pillow. I think I might need to snatch it up.
Megan says
Those pillows are wayyyy cool. They are stitched? Totally looks painted…makes me love them even more!
Carrie says
I absolutely LOVE Pottery Barns bird items!! I have had a secret crush on birds, eggs, and nests for a while now. I am especially fond of the mugs with the little birdie perched on the handle. So cute!!
lisa says
Yes! I am also obsessed (see my blog at http://listsinmypocket.wordpress.com.) I scored really cute birdie salt shakers from a local gift store. I also love the Nest pillow! Please show and tell if you get anything. 🙂
Kyley says
I agree with the bird thing…In my 2008 wedding we had a lot of subtle birds hidden into the occasion.
I had two handmade fabric birds as the cake toppers. Our invitations even featured tiny graphic birds.
My other “obsession” would have to be glass bottles and canisters. I don’t know why I love them but I do. I save vintage soda bottles, or peel the labels off wine bottles and save them. I collect vintage glass ware and I even have an old vintage ball jar lamp. So I can relate! I try to keep my “obsession” a secret form friends and family because I don’t want to be gifted a zillion glass bottles – afterall I’m very picky about which ones make it into my home. 🙂
Caitlin @that House On the Corner says
Yup! Love them… the natural look of the nests and everything!

I thought of you when I saw this giveaway on another blog. hint: there is a bird on a necklace involved. Check it out. http://www.lisaleonardonline.com/blog
Liz says
Katie, I love your little ceramic birds. They have so much attitude for being such tiny little things.
I can’t have any cute little birdies of any sort in my house though. My Grandma, was EXTREMELY superstitious and always told me that birds meant death. Yikes right? Yea. So I don’t buy any out of respect for her memory and for fear that she might come pinch my toes while I sleep (her favorite threat).
Julie says
Poop! Hahaha! That completly made my day.
I had to do my first comment after seeing that.
I’ve been an avid reader of your blog since I’ve checked it out thanks to younghouselove.com. I love everything and all the laughs. You post about having gas almost made me died.
Anyways, love everything you’re doing.
micah says
love the pillows but those bird candles are a little creepy!

I actually have the first 3 white ceramic birds you have pictured (an ebay find years ago!), as well as a few others scattered around the house. I’m in love with those pillows and hurricanes with the eggs! Too awesome!

Another bird fan, here! I have a few ceramic ones, a couple of glitter ones for the holidays and a great silver one that I recently found at TJMaxx.
Adam says
My wife and I are obsessed with local birds of prey. We’ve seen a bald eagle five times (we live near a river) including once perched in a tree, countless red-tail hawks, a couple of owls, and my wife has managed to see a great horned owl on her family’s farm this past year as well.
Melissa says
Seriously girl, bacon and birds… I think we may have a relative in common! I just finished a large, three panel modern-style painting for the living room with white cut-out style birds and my hubby asked if any other creature ever enters my line of sight.
I just found some white ceramic birds at Home Outfitters (do you guys have that in the US) for $2 each!! I think I will have to break down and order some birdie Pottery Barn things. Thanks for the heads up!
Now off to find some bacon for breakfast 😉
Sarah says
For me it’s ducks… I have wooden ducks in my kitchen and ceramic ducks in the family room… my husband thinks it’s wierd, but I like ducks! I grew up in a house right on a river, and we didn’t ever have to go to the park to feed the geese…
Brittany S says
I knew you would post about the new PB birdie stuff! I too am obsessed! I received my PB catalog yesterday and read through it twice obsessing over the bird details. We too have 3 birdcages in our house and I am in love with anything “nest”! I’ll be ordering the “nest” lumbar pillow for sure.
Wendy says
I thought of you when I got the pottery barn catalog a few weeks ago!! 🙂 I love, love, love the bird bath bowl.
Jeannette says
i am totally birdy right there with you! that nest pillow had me DROOLING over the pottery barn catalog. I knew there was some secret reason why I felt so connected with your blog. and now I know. its the bird connection! I’m literally sitting on the edge of my seat in anticipation of Will’s Owl bedroom. I’m surprised you didn’t include this video in your post: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WNrx2jq184 LMAO!!!!
Sarah says
Katie,
I am Obsessed with bird stuff as well. I decorated my office with some goods just recently. Check out Hobby Lobby. They have a lot of bird stuff on the “cheep.”
Britni says
I have an obsession with elephants and drinking glasses (tea, Juice, cocktail, wine, etc…) even though we more than enough for me and my boyfriend. Every time I go for a beverage I pause at the cabinet to think about which glass I want to use. As for the Elephants, they are spread all over the house, wood, ceramic, glass, metal..
So yes, I can relate. I don’t know if that is a good thing or bad.
Clementine says
My obsession: Owls, Owls & more Owls, plus anything ceramic , the color Orange, teapots, chocolate, Johnny Depp & shoes.
Laura D says
I think birds is a good decorative item. Those pillows you could def make! I think a few birds here and there are a nice touch. I for one love lemons. idk why, maybe cuz i’m obsessed with lemon water. I dont buy a lot of lemon things, but i do ponder over them in the store all the time.
MIchelle says
HA! I’m so glad I’m not the only one! I am obsessed with birds…I have them in just about every room. It was probably dangerous to see your post…looks like I have some shopping to do!
Sugar Cookie says
I love this, though I am not obsessed with birds; rather, I am obsessed with a color – Tiffany blue! It started with my wedding, which turned into my need for a Tiffany blue Christmas tree. Now our house is full of Tiffany blue centerpieces, picture frames, towels, and (my favorite, newest addition!) a Tiffany blue teapot. I can’t get enough of it!!
Sarah says
I got the PB catalog earlier this week…bad thing for a bird addict like me
Kelly says
Katie! Yesterday at our TJ Maxx, I came THIS close to fainting on the dish aisle. Bird dishes. Cutest ones I’ve seen in a while- they were SO Anthro. Go to your TJ Maxx… run!
Karen says
I love birds too! When I got married 3 years ago we actually used a bird/robin’s egg/nest theme. Sadly, it was before all these cute bird things were out in stores. We had to be creative with our decorations. I have tons of birds figures in my house. You should check out Anthropolgie. I just got a cute bird plate from there this week.
nell ann says
I actually just blogged about the same thing! Well, not the naughty plate, but otherwise. : )
Carol says
I love me some birds! My mom made me a pillow for the sunroom with a bird applique on it which was my favorite gift this year! Birds everywhere and I have the Spode Woodland dishes that have birds on them. Not to mention those lovely Pier 1 red bird plates, lots of bird salt and peppers and I’m in the middle of needlepointing some bird pillows for the sunroom as well. Oh yes, I do have a bird obsessiion. I was drooling over the PB catalog and may just have to send in an order…

Wow – it looks like I am not alone in my bird obsession! I guess it’s true when they say ‘birds of a feather flock together!’

LOVE birds! For Christmas boyfriend got me the cutest white salt & pepper shakers (bird shaped, of course) from Pier 1. They have a really gorgeous swirly design on their wingular area.
I’m loving some of this stuff, especially the white plates & hurricanes with eggs. LOVE!!
Robyn C. says
Oh yes, I love the birds! Hello? I’m named after one! (My momma thinks the “Y” spelling is cool) Anyway, when I got married I played up my name with a bird themed wedding.Faux bird nests, with M&M’s that were egg shaped. (Wedding after Easter, got’em so cheap!)I also mixed in some feathers in my table settings. Even “love bird” cookies as favors. It was so easy to decorate with birds, and everyone at the wedding knew the reason behind it! I recycled most of my wedding decorations, and have little bird reminders of our special day to enjoy!
Anne says
My first time commenting, Katie; found you on Young House Love, and, of course, fell in love with you guys, too!!
Living on an island next to the Atlantic ocean, we have included lots of sea birds in our decor. I have two pretty, soft colored, real duck decoys up on my mantel, along with large welk shells. I have a simple, large carved swan on the ledge at the top of our stairs (reverse floor plan, in order to see the marsh, lighthouse, and water views). Another swan on the table in the downstairs hall. A photo of a Great Egrit landing on the water (“Water Ballet”) is in our great room.
Also, I have the large, unique wooden bird cage that I had found for my daughter’s wedding, which now sits on top of our hutch. Love looking at it up there.
And, I have been drawn recently to plates with birds on them, thinking I should at least purchase a few for salad plates. So, like you when I opened my latest Pottery Barn catelog, I was a goner!! I “heart” those bird cages, bird pillows, and bird plates! And, thanks to you and Sherry, I am starting to fall in love with the white figurines both of you have in your homes. They would go great with our other birds and our color scheme of white, pale blue, and green. Not sure what it is about birds, other than they bring a feeling of peace and joy to me.
We actually just moved to our island home last year, after living 23 miles away for 32 years. The purpose of the move was to be closer to the beach and the beautiful birds that fly around our island and the barrier island in front of our home (Assateague Island, Virginia).
So, long story short: I love me some birds, too, Katie !!

I love birds too! I need to find me some white ceramic birds and bird cages.

I literally gasped when I opened the new PB catalog myself! I am a birdaholic. Hey, with a name like Robin, you have to latch onto it! So yes, I am very much into birds. On everything. Honestly, my husband better take away the debit cards and cash because if he doesn’t, I may have one of everything in the new catalog!!
Sherrie says
Birds of a feather flock together. 🙂 I too love birds. Martha Stewart came out with some cute white, ceramic bird ornaments last year that I snatched on sale.
She had similar ones this year, but with blue lacey painted accents on them unfortunately. They were cute, but I wanted them accent free.
Here’s a pic of them on my office tree this year.

Dangerous by product of getting married in an elephant and having a name that starts with “e”

Not as much but they’re still adorable! I just picked up a sparkly, silver bird ornament…actually, it’s one of the ornaments I’ll be using for the Advent Calendar I’ll be making next year, inspired by YOU! 🙂
My obsession is teapots…I didn’t realize it ’til I looked around and was like “where did all of these teapots come from?”

We were in our TJMaxx/Home Goods today and they had tons of bird cage themed pieces. If you’re looking for more bird things, that might be a place to check out if you have one local. The one here in Asheville, NC is stocked!

I am super obsessed as well! Thank goodness I’m not the only one! I swoon over birdcages. Something about them is so elegant and vintage. I love that wall hanging as well. And, of course, there are the pillows. Okay, I love it all. I don’t know what it is about bird-related things, but I will gladly jump on the bandwagon. 🙂
Mari says
I, too, am obsessed with feathered beings. They are too cool for school, in my opinion. My fiance and I just bought a new house and our guest room theme is… BIRDS! Yipee! 🙂 I’ve already found a fabulous lamp with a bird perched on the base (Tuesday Morning) and some white ceramic birdies (T.J. Maxx) … and then I saw the new Pottery Barn catalog… and I peed my pants. Lord a’ mercy. It made my heart leap with joy! I just thought I would let you know that I totally FEEL YOU GIRL. 😉
