Did ya’ll know we are in search of the perfect rug?
Yup.
A rug for our kitchen.
Right now it looks ridiculously….wooden.
A nice patterned rug would be the perfect solution to break up all that gunstock colored wood flooring. Since our cabinets are wood too, it takes your eye and makes it feel a little soaked in oak. It leaves it pining for no pine. It’s wallowing in willow. It’s maple-ed in…err…yea, I got nothing.
The point is we needed some floor covering and fast. The boyfriend and I headed to the Pottery Barn outlets to see if their 30% special on rugs would yield us a great buy.
Jeremy spotted this yellow one and loved it instantly. The only problem is that it is a 3×5 size. We were really hoping to snag a 5×8 because it would cover a larger portion of the kitchen floor. We searched and searched. All they seemed to have was plain red and a couple pink and green combos…somehow I don’t think I would be able to convince Jeremy that pink/green would be the right fit in the kitchen. Plus the key to getting a rug for that space would be a bold but not show-stealing pattern…which none of the others had.
We shirked off the ALL SALES FINAL sign and headed to checkout. What really sealed the deal was the price tag. It was marked down to $89 and then we got an additional 30% off. When we found out that this lovely sunny baby would only cost around sixty smackers, we thought that surely it could work for now and then later be moved into the basement laundry room (I have dreams of a golden laundry room complete with a folding station, country sink, and laundry shoot that magically carries the dirty towels down the center of the house into a basket waiting with open arms!).
Overall, I don’t actually think it looks that bad for now. Sure it’s a little too small. Sure it’s not gonna stay there forever. Sure I will have to keep my eye out for a future bigger kitchen rug but for now this little golden child looks a-ok. Besides, this thing is worth its weight in gold for being so cushy on my knees when I am cooking dinner. And my philosophy is that you buy things you love especially when on sale – in the end, you’ll find a way to make it work….right? or did I make a horrible decision and just throw away 60 bones?!?!

I love your carpet! Of course I love anything yellow. I think you have the same carpet as John & Sherry at TYH.

Yup, I think the youngsters have the same one, in their living room. I agree that it’s too small for the space, I think possibly a runner may have been a better fit, since although thinner, would fill more length. But if you love the rug and know you’ll use it elsewhere.. then no loss right?
Lisa says
lovely but definitely too small. I think it would look better in front of the sink until you find a larger rug.
Katie says
You have got to be kidding me!? Those youngsters are always trying to copy me! Sherry, if you are listening…it’s over. We are no longer BFF. I simply can not be virtual friends with someone I never have met that trys to copy me. And I definitely can’t have the same rug as you…I am writing Pottery Barn tonight to tell them that they can not sell copies of the same rug…it is embarrassing and leads to friendships dissolving. This same thing happened to Heidi and LC. What a shame.
XO – Katie
P.S. Sherry – I’m sorry – I love you – please take me back 🙂

LMAO @ “This same thing happened to Heidi and LC”!
I love the moorish pattern! It is a bit small (but you know that since you wrote that in your post) but how about if you turn it the other away, to span the other direction?
(Psst, how about “marinating in maple”?)
Freckles Chick says
BTW, you know I simply adore your gourmet kitchen.

I love it! I recently bought the same rug (in a 5×8) in the espresso color on eBay. and I know that there were some of the yellow ones available.
I do agree that it is a bit small, but also think that maybe you could turn it the other way, like FC suggested.
Lindsay says
Your kitchen is fab! And yes – it’s totally the same rug that john and sherry have in their living/dining room. Not suprised since you both have such great taste. I love it! It’s so bright!! Maybe position it the other way in front of the stove or sink? hmm just a thought! xo
The Fabulous Side of Me says
Oh I like that, it is fun, happy and different (in a good way!). It is a bit small for that space, BUT like you said, it works for the time and you can totally use it somewhere else. Great buy!
Joi says
Girl, you are too funny! I love the post to Sherry.
Anyhoo–the rug is fab, but I’d move it to in front of the sink if it were me.
Michael says
I love the pattern…what if you rotated it 90 degrees and put it in front of the sink?
Anna says
I was just going to say that, Michael! Spin it by the sink. It is really goofy in front of the stove. I do love that PB rug! I agree that you have to buy what you love and just move it where it fits. Good purchase! Just get it the heck away from the oven.
I guess I just boldly (tackily) crossed the “lurker” line. Thanks for having me!

I’m with everyone else here – maybe turn it the other way and put it in front of the sink. Then I think it could totally work!
LyndsAU says
I love the yellow. And I SUPER love the kitchen!!! Beautiful!
Gina says
I love the rug and actually think that not only should you turn it you should get another one to put one where you have it but against the cabinets more – almost like you’re creating an L. I think one big rug may not do the trick… Love your blog and your home! Thanks for letting us all snoop 🙂

It’s really cute and you know how to make yellow work! Personally I could never make friends with a rug in the kitchen, maybe because I can be messy when I cook, and oh yeah, I have three boys (and only one of them is an adult!!) The rug just got too dirty too quickly.
Emily says
I love the pattern. You and those youngsers are so hip. I’m thinking that as a rug centered in front of your sink it will be perfect. Kitchen sinks need Pottery Barn rugs.
mrs.leah.maria says
I don’t think it looks small at all (again proving my decorating incompetence)! Nice choice and what a deal!
Marge says
Oooh I love that rug! I agree that it would look fab centered beneath either the stove (with the long side up against the cabinets) or the sink (same way). Great deal!
longbrakeliving says
I love the rug’s colors and pattern, and at 60 bucks, I don’t think you should have passed! Everyone seems to have had the same idea as me — turn the rug longways. Instead of putting it infront of the sink, you may try placing it in front of the stove if you want to bring some color to the same area of the kitchen.
Tiffany Lynn says
I love that rug! Nice choice 🙂
Katie @ makingthishome.com says
Hey, I’m all about starting small anyway. Hmm maybe that’s why our kitchen is so stinkin’ tiny. Anyway, I think it’s super cute, and when the time comes, you’ll find a smashing spot for it.
hehe love your comment in response to others, too.
