That’s it. It’s officially fall here in Hotlanta. We should call it Autlanta…ya know…Autumn? Atlanta?
Anyone?
(silence.)
(except for that one boo in the background)
Yeah – ok, that one was a little weak.
But the point is still the same…Fall has officially arrived. And I love it more than Real Housewives like appearance enhancements, if you know what I mean. So that is why as soon as the 31st was over, I was packing away my spooky Halloween-inspired decor and pulling out the fall gear. Here’s one little corner of my kitchen that I redid with a little help from a $10 bill.
Previously, this corner of the kitchen was pretty basic for all-year-round fun.
Usually the decor meets our basic needs but doesn’t look too autumn-appealing. I went with the ‘decorate in threes’ rule by placing (1) an oversized clock, (2) a frame with homemade art, and (3) a little dish for catching spare change and those coke caps (gotta love the free coke rewards!). But as cute-as-a-benjamin-button this corner was, it didn’t say ‘fall’ to me. So I was definitely ready for some change.
And now it looks alot more fall-infused.
I removed all the elements of before except for the frame. I just flipped my homemade art over and cut a piece of tan linen and placed it directly over the back of the “1435” art. Then I added some faux fabric leaves, which were only $2 at Hobby Lobby, making sure to curl the stems for a more appealing look. The key to the art was to be haphazard…lopsided…but with a little movement. It makes the art look more natural to have some of the leaves hanging off the linen and to have a couple of those red beauties overlap.
In front of our recycled art, I got out a white cake plate (it was from Goodwill just in case you wanna know) and threaded through some checked brown ribbon into the little holes on the sides.
(ABP TIP: when you are browsing the Goodwill aisles, look for plates, trays or items with holes…even if they are just punched out for the design of the plate like this one or if the tray has sides that you could drill holes out of to make similar to this. Take it home and thread your favorite ribbon through for a holiday specific decor item!)
Topping our little white cake plate is a $6 (scored on sale!) woven pumpkin from Target. A leafy candleholder (gift from our wedding) and a couple brown votives (from an after-Christmas shopping excursion) add some glitter and gleam while a ruby pumpkin pot is the new perfect place for spare change and a box of matches.
I still kept with that ‘rule of threes’ by grouping two sets of three items into the corner for a grounded and balanced display. And my total cost? $6 (woven pumpkin) + $1 (ribbon) + $2 (fabric leaves) = $9….leaving me just enough for a junior bacon cheeseburger 🙂
So what do you think? Did I start off the fall decorating strong or is this corner just so-so? Are you opposed to the pumpkin trend for Thanksgiving? And is there anything that you love to use for fall? Maybe it is a leafy wreath or an orange tablecloth or even a bunch of pinecones that you collected with your kids? Whatever the holiday item – let me hear all about it. Afterall, I have many more corners of my house that need a little Autsome (autumn+awesome) influence.

Lookin’ good Katie! I like to put mini pumpkins on top of my pillar candle holders…grouped in 3’s and staggered heights.
I also filled a wooden tray with mini pumpkins, gourdes and fall leaves.

Very pretty! Also, I love how you have such clean counter space! Mine is so cluttered with appliances and kitchen utensils – looks horrible! I need to start figuring out spaces for all that so we have a little more space
Kylie says
Cute display… got me wondering what kind of countertops do you have in your kitchen and what color? We’re (slowly) doing kitchen reno and I’m leaning towards dark even though we’ve got white everything except for our new floor… Thanks!

I love the woven pumpkin! I looked at that a couple times at the store! great job bargain shopping girl! I posted some fall decor ideas..but i haven’t posted all of my decorating shots. i’ll have to do that soon! random note…lovee you blacksplash. planning on doing something like that in our new house. really into the subway tiles.

This looks great! I never really decorated for fall before…that was until I saw white faux pumpkins at Michael’s for half-of…check out my blog for after pics 🙂

I love the look of the frame against your backsplash! I made a trip to Ikea just for a frame to do the same thing. Now I’m paranoid it will fall over and the glass will shatter…I can’t help but worry about those things since I live in shakey California. What did you use to hold it in place or is it just sitting against the backslpash? Also, did you make the number print? If so, does it have meaning or is it random?

this is sorta old but i was looking for some art ideas and love this leaf art.
did you glue them down or did they just stay put when you added the backing of the picture frame? how long did the leaves last? did they end up shriveling up at all? if so, is there any sort of spray out there that could make them last longer? thaaaaanks in advanced!
Katie says
Hi Jenn –
They are craft leaves – so they don’t die or anything. And I suppose you could use adhesive spray or even scrapbook stickies to get them to be doubley stuck but I just plopped em in there. They didn’t move. Happy crafting!
