Gold & Marble Coasters DIY

Let’s get all crafty up in here!  Break out the mashed potatoes and gravy and let’s make something functional and pretty to boot!  Oh you don’t craft with MP&G?  You are missing out sister.  Because it’s like half beverage, half comfort food….all craft power.

Today we are making these adorable marble and gold coasters….they are seriously GORGEOUS in real life.  Great for leaving out and protecting your wood or laminate furniture…and they look WAY more expensive than they are.  Your inner Monica will be proud to handle out these coasters 🙂

And the fact is…they are great for gifts too!  I think it would be a great present for any teacher, mother, sister, neighbor and more.  Think about wrapping them up with a bit of jute or ribbon.  I think I might make some more for my mom and add a note that says “Thanks for always protecting me!  Your heart is gold!” 🙂

So the materials are simple.  You will need four square 4in x 4in carrara white marble tiles.  I got mine at Floor & Decor for under thirty cents a pop.  You will also need some gold foil (mine is leftover from an old gold vase project but here is a link to a good deal!) and some rubber cement and a brush.

Applying the foil to the edges is REALLY easy.  Just add a little rubber cement and then push the foil on that area and rub it for a few seconds and peel it off.  The gold will stick anywhere there was glue.  I did a lighter glue application because I wanted it to look like worn gold edges…not solid like a paint.

My best hint is to put a little bowl under your tile when you are applying the rubber cement because it will keep the glue from getting on a drop cloth and wasting your gold foil.

Once you allow your edges to fully dry, you want to put something on the bottom to protect your surface from being scratched by the tile.  I used these felt pads – available at pretty much any home improvement store – and they worked great.

I also tried the rubber version – they are wipeable which is nice but I find that my kids think they look like something they should peel off and chew….so keep that in mind if you have a chewer in the family 🙂

The next step is to finish those mashed potatoes.  Don’t let them go to waste.  That would be craft-tragic.

You are done and now you can fully protect yourself from water drips and cup rings. Man…making the world safer…one craft at a time…that’s what you are doing.

And I bet that you could make a whole slew of these and put them together for ready-to-go hostess gifts.  I mean…talk about kicking butt and taking names!  Everyone will want to invite you over!  Go you Miss popular!  Hopefully your friends serve potatoes 🙂
