Say goodbye!
The mullet is out of here ð
In the past, I have always given the boy’s their first haircut and this past week Max received his first legit hair cut. Â So you may be thinking….didn’t I miss one? Â Well….it really made me upset when Jeremy’s sim card died and took it’s photos to the great beyond with it. Â All of the photos of LJ’s first haircut were on it ð Â That was tragic. Â But I still have LJ so I can’t be that upset. Â #perspective
Anyhoo….so if you want to check out Will’s first haircut, read this post. Â And here is Weston’s first haircut….and yes it was news breaking….I buzzed him….here is the link ð Â Love that kid with a really short do!
And this past week, it was Max’s turn. Â I had already trimmed his bangs and a little over his ears but the hair in the back had not been touched. Â Is that not bona fide mullet or what?!
I feel like maybe this haircut could have been a mistake….like with chops and a goatee, I could have made him Joe Dirt for Halloween ð
Okay so if you want to do this at home, I have learned a couple important lessons when it comes to the first haircut. Â First – use a Bumbo with a tray. Â Also – have them dressed….the hair itches so a tshirt is about the only thing that they will keep on (those capes never work for my kids….and if it wasn’t 100 degrees out in Georgia right now, I would have done long sleeves.
Third – use a tiny rubber band to gather your kiddo’s hair up for the memory box or book or whatever. Â I used a little plastic one from the Dollar Tree. Â And then give them non-sticky candy….Smarties work really great because usually they are old enough to grab that but they are tiny so it buys you time.
I’ve watched about a hundred YouTube videos on boys haircuts and they are all pretty similar. Â I feel like I usually cut the back first….the big old whack of that pony tail just for kicks….but that is only when I do their first haircut.
I just use cheap hair cutting scissors and with the boys I have a buzzing kit that makes it really easy.
Is it weird that I’m tensing up just looking at this photo? Â Ahhh!
And there we have it! Â His baby locks!
Usually it takes me about 15 minutes to do the first haircut and then I have to go back later for touchups. Â There is always things I missed.
Eyelash game is strong with this one.
But I really think that most people can do their own kid’s hair cuts. Â I have sent in Will a couple times to get a haircut in the salon but I always have to fix it later….it’s terrible. Â I must be going to the wrong place. Â But it makes me so mad to pay the money to get him a haircut and then I end up tweaking it anyway. Â I’d rather just give the money to Will to save in his piggy bank!
And there is the little guy with his new do! Â It’s crazy how grown up he looks now! Â And how much lighter his hair looks….such a handsome dude ð
And because LJ’s haircut photos are gone, I wanted to include a couple of him getting a trim too….ya know….so crazy people didn’t say I didn’t love him ð
LJ has always had this crazy awesome hair and both Jeremy and I love it long. Â We think it suits him and he gets so many compliments. Â Literally every time we go grocery shopping little old ladies stop us and say “His hair! Â People pay good money for that color! Â And those highlights!” Â And then they go on to tell us about the history of their hair color. Â I’m not even joking. Â It’s hilarious.
This is my ‘don’t-screw-up’ face. Â And just look at that baby with the long locks! Â Isn’t he so cute?! Â I just die when I see my kids. Â I mean….how beautiful are they!? Â I know all moms feel that way but seriously….I don’t think Jeremy and I are unattractive…we are just normal people….but our kids? Â They are all so different and all got the best of us in different combinations! Â I’m gonna have to make sure I embarrass them enough to keep them humble ð
So that’s it! Â Just a little glimpse into one of our doings here at the Bower household. Â Today I head back to the Pedraza’s to finish up their vent hood. Â It’s gonna be one of my favorite DIY’s in the kitchen. Â What are you guys up to?

Good morning from chilly Minnesota!
Kiddos to you for cutting your boys hair! I never mastered the scissors cut on my son but I did a heckofa buzz cut!

Oh my gosh, I just teared up watching you snip that pony!! We have yet to cut our girls hair, but I think the oldest needs it soon. We have two redheads and the 3.5 year old is curly and turning into a mullet! With my red hair included we cannot get thru a grocery store trip without stopping traffic, literally. I have to be on high alert to keep the old ladies from touching their hair!
P.S. Are you and Maxi still on your BF journey? I haven’t seen you mention it lately and although I’m still 4 months away from the year mark I’m having a hard time imagining stopping at a year.

I can see Cole in that last picture of Maxie. Your Mom has some beautiful grandbabies!

Great post! I was just thinking the other day I should go to hair cutting school so I can cut my boys hair better! We have three boys and I like to keep the sides and back trimmed neatly. They each have their different look, but with frequent haircuts I decided this summer to start doing it myself. I really need some help with the scissor cutting on the top! Off to YouTube I go!

I think the new FireFox update messed up some stylesheets – the text on your blog is now completely white. Everything seems fine in IE and Chrome. Thankfully the adorable kiddo pictures are still visible ð

I’m still too afraid to try and cut my daughter’s hair – luckily I have super affordable stylist/friend who I can trust. We just did the first haircut this weekend and there are absolutely no pictures of it because I had to sit in the chair hugging her while my husband played Lion Guard videos on his phone over my shoulder to keep her still. She wanted no part of the cape either. Sniffle.
You did a great job with his hair though, so I’m impressed!
Are you still planning on sharing his birth story?

Hi Katie,
For some reason the font on your blog is white on my computer. I can’t see any words (emoticons and links to other posts show up) if I am on your blog, but if I highlight the paragraph, I can then see the words. This is not happening with any other blogs I regularly follow, so I don’t think it is my computer. Have any of your other followers had this problem?
Thanks!

You do so well with their hair cuts! And yes ADORABLE children ð
I’m going to be one of those people and ask an unrelated question. Do you like the bumbo tray? We are borrowing a bumbo for my now 6 month old…she does ok in it but isn’t a huge fan of not being able to roll/scoot away after about 10 minutes. I’m considering getting the tray just as an extra option for travel high chair and maybe to help contain her more. Does it snap on pretty securely? Will it get in the way of crazy chunky baby legs (so chunky!)?
Thanks for any opinions. Love checking in on the blog and seeing everything from diy to mom stuff ð
Katie says
We do like the tray. I think it is a really good hook on configuration and also it seems to stabilize the chair a bit more….but it would be tight on the legs if they are really chunky. Is there a way you can try a tray at a store before making a purchase?

I think it has to do with Firefox being messed up. Here is a link to an explanation on how to set your firefox to default settings…that should solve the issue.

Oh that’s a good idea to try on at a store first. I feel kinda dumb for not even thinking of that. I don’t know how you manage to have a working brain after four, two kids has demolished mine. Kudos to you!

My youngest child (he’s 16 months) just got his first haircut too. I’m not brave enough to do it myself so they’ve all gone to the same place (Walmart) to get it done. I guess its our own tradition. Anway, he had a mullet goin’ on too. And he even has the same t-shirt as Max in that first photo. Now my little guy looks like a proper boy. Gotta love them first haircuts!
