Before we left for our summer family vacation, I went turtle hunting.
It involves very stealthy covert missions requiring costumes, large machinery and habitat preparation. In short, I spied one on the road in our neighborhood, drove the four-wheeler back to get it after slapping on a pair of flipflops, and set the little guy in the a wheelbarrow filled with hay, celery, and water. No, I don’t know if turtles eat celery.
The next day I got another one. I am an expert reptile pursuer . Just call me Dog Turtle the Bounty Hunter.
I love turtles. They are definitely in my top 3 of favorite animals.
I think it’s because I can identify with them. We both are homebodies…and a little slow at times.
Do you have an animal you can relate to?
p.s. I announced the winner of the Freschetta giveaway! Is it you?

I think I can relate to sloths… slow, sleepy and clingy.
Hubby says our puppy is a lot like me: grumpy, sleepy, stompy and rascally. We’ve got a cavalier x bichon.
I hope when we have kids, they take after the hubs and turn out super bright and level-headed.
Who does Will take after? 😀 He def looks like you!!
He’s super cute sans sideburns but when abouts you reckon they’ll sprout? My mum shaved my bro’s head to stimulate hair growth cos he was baldish for the longest time lol. I highly advise against it unless you want a lil gangsta Will 🙂

I love turtles! I use to scoop the little baby ones out of the pound from my childhood home and keep them as pets in a big tank. You have to watch out though, most turtles have Seminole and most of the time they die before they get a year old. Its sad to see them go but yours seem to look older and super healthy and happy.Oh, and turtles eat lettuce and most other garden plants (and if its a water turtle like mine were they will eat small fish and shrimp that you can get at petsmart). Not sure if you planned on keeping them or not but just thought I’d let you know.:)

Turtles are at the top of my list also. A little over a year ago we had a turtle lay about eight eggs in our backyard and we incubated them until they hatched. Only one survived and is still going strong. We call him Rambo.
On another note I saw this on Pinterest and thought of you:

You incubated turtles?! AWESOME.

Katie, make sure that if you rescue any other turtles, that you use gloves to pick them up. I learned this after I rescued one from the middle of a busy intersection in rush-hour traffic (yes, I realize it was dangerous- but the poor guy was upside down in his little shell and I just couldn’t leave him there) and was sick just a few hours later. The verdict? I had salmonella poisoning. When I went to the doctor he asked me what I had eaten and when he ruled out food, he had me walk him through my day. I told him my amazing ‘I saved a baby from a burning building’ – I mean, ‘I saved a poor turtle from the middle of the road’ story and he told me that I got the salmonella from the turtle.
I now carry a box of gloves in my trunk for any future turtle rescues. 😉
Love the blog. Check mine out!! http://www.rockcandiedesigns.com

I was surprised to see only one other comment about this! Turtles are very cute but can get you very sick… For some reason I thought that was common knowledge. :p

Ok, this post seals the deal. We were made to be best friends.
1.My name is Katie
2.I love Jesus
3.I heart BACON.
4.I laugh out loud at your blog at least 3 times a week, and stay up too late reading old posts.(sorry bout the stalking but your blog makes me smile. And in my head we are bff.)
5.I love photography, and hope to earn my momarazzi credentials one day.
6.YHL is amazing.
7.We had turtles growing up. We names them Jasmine and Aladdin. They lived in a pen we built in our backyard and even moved across the state with us.(we never got sick, bit I would be careful just in case.) Our turtles favorite food was canned cat food, weird I know but they loved the stuff. Also note, box turtles like ours were awesome pets because they hibernate about 5 months of the year. Talk about low maintenance.
Super long comment, but since we have so much in common I couldn’t resist sharing.

Hi! I wonder if the turtles were looking for a place to lay their eggs.

I love turtles! I used to have one in college- it had one of those cute painted bellies. Sadly it didn’t survive too long.
Also, totally off topic but you need to visit this site. I think it was made for you and your bacon lovin’! http://www.perpetualkid.com/bacon.aspx

We have a pet turtle, which is not really as much fun as it sounds like. He was adorable when he was little and tried to climb on things, but now he just floats around in his tank. He is a red-eared slider, which is I think is native to your neck of the woods. Maybe I should ship him overnight to you and he can live in your creek!
Check him out here: http://quarteracreadventure.blogspot.com/2011/04/coming-out-of-our-shells.html

I have a deep seeded appreciation for turtles, but also an irrational fear of them. Don’t ask.
Out of curiosity, what ARE you planning to do with these little fellas?
Charlene Austin says
Now pray tell what will you do with them? (says the Cdn girl who’s never seen a turtle in person). Is it a pet?
Susan says
Um, just as Tara said, turtles are more work than people think. And actually, in GA, keeping box turtles (which is what those are) is illegal. Sorry! Sad, but true. They can live very long lives (25-30 years!) and it can be complicated to care for them. Water turtles are a whole ‘nuther story as far as their care.
They are adorable though!
Emily says
Sounds like something I would do! Be careful though, I’ve heard that turtles commonly carry salmonella, as a previous poster commented.
Katie says
Whoa. That’s just crazy. And kudos for saving the turtle and risking your life for it – twice!
I’ll have to tell Jer that I need a box of gloves….he’ll look at me like I’m loco but the turtles need our help 🙂

I’m glad to hear that they live long lives…and sad to say that we only kept these little guys for the afternoon. Since we were preparing to go on vacation, we just wanted to save them from cars and to show Will 🙂 Good thing, huh?

Katie says
We let the little guys go…we don’t really have the know-how to keep a turtle for longer than a couple hours. We simply put them near the edge of the woods…far enough away from the blazing sun and any predator birds…hopefully they made it to whereever they needed to head.

Katie says
We didn’t have any plans further than rescuing from street traffic. Simply enjoy watching them for an afternoon and then letting them go.

Yes! I always appreciate the kind folks who stop and help the turtles cross the road. We see too many animals hit…how do people drive like that?!
Erin says
I love turtles too… people think its kind of odd, but I love the simplicity about them. Plus, I loved your comment that you are both homebodies and a bit slow at times… that me exactly! ha ha ha! 🙂 Love your posts!

Yay! That’s awesome. Funny, we saved our neighbor’s chickens last week. Although, we do not live in or near the country–we live in the city! The chickens had crossed the alley and were playing in our ‘back yard’ (there is no yard to speak of). So, we corralled them back into their own yard (yeah, they totally acted as if they knew they were being naughty and were bummed to get caught). Funny, a couple of months ago, I spoke with some folks that rescued two tortoises (I forget which kind, but the former owners did not take care of them properly–so sad). Apparently, the tortoises go CRAZY for dandelions in the summer.
Anyways, yay for saving the turtles! Will is so lucky to have you as a mom!!!
Heather S. says
I LOVE turtles. I had two tortoises named Toby and Hedi, I loved just watching them walk around their outside pen I made them. I also had two red ear sliders… Picasso and Chadwick, but the hubbie and I had to release them into a pond after a few years. Their a lot of work, but so so CUTE! 🙂
Helen says
Neat! I hope Will was excited! By the way, I also think it’s absolutely fantastic that you’re teaching him to be kind to animals and to lend a helping hand whenever possible.
